A multi page argument full of deep dive stats, wild hypotheticals and massive presuppositions about what the other team should've done after a Cubs walk off win.

This board's still got it, folks

The pitcher seemed annoyed with himself - I don’t think it was intentional.

Right, if he was gonna drill someone,  it would of been Kelly, why wait for PCA who struggles against LHP and put him and his speed on first

Nico would've been given 2nd base; they would not have thrown through. As has been stated, Kimbrel isnt a GB guy anyway. In that situation, the decision for Mendoza should've been to chase a strikeout which is more likely with Busch than Hoerner (split slashlines mean less when you dont need to reach base). Then choose whether to pitch to Bregman or I assume Amaya after him.

My question is.....do the Mets have a more GB friendly reliever warmed up and ready to come in to improve the chances of a double play since it was already a bad situation of having PCA on 2b with no outs to start the inning. You get the K you need to make a double play possible, but then just pitch to one of the best contact hitters in baseball with no DP option on the table since no one was on 1st. Whether you pitch to Busch or Bregman to try to induce that GB is based on what arm the reliever coming in throws with.

It was an impossible situation, but pitching to Nico seems like the craziest idea and I'm certainly thrilled that they chose that route. Not only is Nico a great contact hitter, but he's leading the NL in RBI.

suck it mets, I hope you lose 50 in a row, will never forgive you and daniel murphy for 2015 or 2004 and victor diaz

Victor Diaz is still fresh on my mind and even more than Daniel Murphys Mets. Cubs have swept them 9 times since 2014 and it never feels like enough.

remember... I can't even think of his name right now but he was on the opening day roster last year and I'm not gonna google it. He was brutal though

Victor Diaz nonsense was far worse, at least 2015 was in playoffs and the Mets were actually a good team.  Victor Diaz' HR was quite literally the only noteworthy thing he did in a very short MLB career.

It’s still misplaced hatred no matter how you slice it. Victor Diaz wasn’t the reason.they dropped 6 of their next 7. The Marlins I hate more to be honest and it’s super annoying that it’s ilegal for Chicago sports teams to win championships as an underdog.

So then you *best* option is a bases loaded situation against Alex Bregman, with a pitcher who is struggling to throw strikes?

Every option sounds bad. And to be clear here is your run matrix for a run scored in all of the possible situations:

3rd, 1 out: .930 runs scored

3rd and 1st, one out: 1.17 runs scored

3rd and 2nd one out: 1.4 runs scored

Bases loaded one out: 1.6 runs scored

All we are doing is making a run more likely to score by adding base runners.

There is no clear answer here.

I definitely agree that there were no good options there, but I don't think it's as cut and dry as you're making it out to be.  My only real argument is that these run expectancies are calculated with generic MLB player at the plate based on the millions of times these situations have happened over 100+ years and don't account for a guy who's been a top 10 MLB player for going on 3 years now being at the plate.  Is he prime Albert Pujols? No, but he's the best hitter in the Cubs lineup right now and if I was the manager in the other dugout, I think I'm going another route to not let that guy beat me.

Yeah - I watched that in real time, and I kinda winced a bit as I get Cole will get enthusiastic with some references (like referring to "The Fan" starring Robert DeNiro in the same postgame).  However, it appeared that Elise jumped in quick enough to move the conversation forward.

Unsure if this is the usual formatting on Marquee's youtube channel, but the posted postgame reaction video didn't have that "CareerBuilder"/LinkedIn comment on it.  Cole, Elise and Cliff spent most of that segment trying to make sense of what happened.  Cliff was being very nuanced in his commentary - not totally letting Mendoza off the hook, but also acknowledging that decisions can be easier in hindsight.  What was most notable to me is at around the 8:10 mark that Cliff finally put his hands up, "I'm not beatin' that dude up...we trying to celebrate the Dub over here, not beatin' this cat up...they gonna do that on SNY."

I intuit that Cliff from his own experience of competing in the league, and remembering how vulnerable as a player it is to be accountable, he's trying to be graceful and at least not take any joy from this situation.
