It’s kind of hilarious to see MLB hitters whiffing on maybe the only MLB pitch I would be capable of hitting.

The timing of such slow pitches would definitely horsefeathers with the hitters.

Can someone explain how, before today, Horton was only worth 0.7 bWAR despite a 3.08 ERA in 87.2 IP? That's only 1.6 for a 200 inning season. Fangraphs has him at 1.3, but I believe they're FIP based and before today he had a 3.87 FIP. What am I missing in how B-R calculates WAR?

I think B-R uses RA9 (ERA with unearned runs). I think Cade's early lack of K is what's really hurting him.

I know the division is mostly out of reach but still nice to see the Brewers take one on the chin today against a bad Giants offense. Especially satisfying to see them waste a Peralta start.

They have a pretty tough road until the weekend after labor day, if you can get it to 4 or even 3 games back by the 5th, then things could get real interesting.  Especially with the Cubs clinching the H2H tiebreaker.

Cubs are an elite Saturday road team with a 10-1 record outscoring opponents 84-25 with wins over the Astros, Tigers, Dodgers, Yankees, Brewers and Mets by a combined 51-13 score.

This is a reminder that the best version of this team is a contender. The worst version is a playoff team.

All they need in the playoffs is a few hot starters, the best Palencia, and some SLG.

I missed 100% of this game. Decided to read the game thread and thought I accidentally pulled up an old game thread from early May.

This team might be back

Seems like barring collapse we’ll either be WC1 or WC2 and playing the Dodgers or Padres, small chance of Mets. Which team would you rather see in a short series?

I think the Padres because they don’t have left handed starting pitchers and they don’t hit lefties well. Least favorite opponent would be the Dodgers. Mets might go with Peterson and Manaea against us.

And health. But otherwise, 100% spot on. If their offense is performing at even their average production the Cubs will be tough to beat if Boyd and Horton are healthy. Nothing wrong with a top 3 of Imanaga, Boyd and Horton. Pen looks pretty solid too, if Palencia is at his best.

Good call. Both teams are scary but the lefty situation (pitching and hitting) definitely favors us. Also how is San Diego 29th in the league in HRs? I know Petco is a big pitchers park but they seem like a team that should have more dongs.

I am pretty sure each of those guys pitched more innings in that streak. Horton does 5 or 6. Still fantastic. Not taking anything away from him, but Jake’s run was unreal.

For sure. To be a 23 year old rookie pulling this off is astounding.

I think it depends on whose rotation is healthier at the moment.  Right now the Dodgers have all three of Yamamoto/Glasnow/Snell, so you'd much rather face the Padres.  Who knows how long that'll last though, and Cease/King/Pivetta isn't *that* far behind.

It's pretty obvious at this point that the team is shielding Shaw from right handed sinkerballers.  Pretty much every "why isn't Shaw starting" complaint the last few weeks has that in common.

I’ll take my chances with the guy leading NL rookies in bWAR and has a 181 wRC+ in the second half
