Ok, he calls the timeout immediately with 31 seconds left after the sack

They set up a play call they like and get the kick unit ready for a scramble drill kick

The play takes 3-5 seconds and the offense rushes off the field, the place kicking team rushes out, but something goes wrong as they try to get set.  A procedure penalty causes a runoff to end, the blocking scheme gets screwed up and yet another kick gets blocked, or maybe Santos just misses it.

Would people *really* be saying Eberflus made the right call by calling the timeout earlier and putting all the pressure on the place kicking unit?

You’re right, letting the time run out was the right choice.

lets move on

OldKyle>NotKyle

We have not had repeated sniper attacks in recent weeks. We have had repeated operational problems with the field goal unit in recent weeks.

No one has actually stepped up to say "yes, we would have said it was the right call even if it had failed" because you know I'm right, which doesn't matter to most people but it does matter to me so you'll just have to live with a few more posts about it.  The only one I actually trust on this stuff is UmFan, who consistently makes calls in advance and sticks with them.

The fact that the offense can't get a play called and set in less than 26 seconds in that scenario is a massive indictment on the coaching staff. As is the fact that Kmet felt comfortable committing the exact same penalty as he has been called for earlier. And Borom not knowing the snap count.

And it doesn't even matter that it was right, because the players very clearly don't have enough faith in him to trust him, and aren't being shy about it in the media, which is an infinitely bigger problem and is immediately firable.

Happy Ebeflus Gets Fired Day, even if I'm a bit early to the punch. It's going to happen. I can sense it.

You cannot be torched this badly by the press and keep your job. And that's ignoring how the players clearly feel about him as their coach.

We can all find things to point to as to the downfall of another game. The Bears were huddling up earlier in that late 4th quarter when I felt there should have been more urgency. I do understand the idea of making sure you don't leave time on the clock, but there were at least 2 plays that each took 45 seconds off the clock. That's a minute and 30 seconds when you only had a little over 3:00 left in the game from your own 1 yard line. Get in field goal range and then waste time rather than put yourself in the position of not having enough time to do so.

Only a Matt Eberflus coached team can have 1st and 10 from the 50 yard line at the 2 minute warning and not be able to at the very least attempt a field goal.

Eberflus won't even fight for his team. Keenan never should have thrown that ball in frustration, but officials can ignore a guy's helmet getting ripped off on one side of the field and not the other simply because Eberflus is okay with that. These players are fighting for themselves. And that's why the change needs to be made today. He's not even man enough to take some responsibility.

Press conference at Halas Hall this morning. No confirmation on the time; initially scheduled for 9am.

What is everyone's guess he is gone? 75%?

DBB seems to think it's happening... he's also advocating for hiring Thomas Brown and pairing him with a veteran DC (and said Rex Ryan is interested in getting back in the league - which, I don't know about him)

50/50.  That’s because I need to see it from this organization before I’ll believe it.  A good organization would never have allowed Everflub to captain the ship this year.

It's fait accompli at this point. Poles can't risk his job by keeping Eberflus around through the end of the season.

If Brown becomes interim head coach and goes 3-2 to finish the year, that would save Poles' job.

The only possible defense of the no TO usage is in a scenario where your QB wasn't just sacked and has to scramble to get reset.  The team was pissing down it's legs (multiple penalties, awful sack, etc.).  Call the timeout. Reset and you can work through various options at that point.  Even if it ended with a bad HM attempt you would have had two plays better than the one they got.  Caleb probably should have just gone with the play called even if it didn't make sense, but it shouldn't have even been in that scenario.  Taking the TO let's you as the coaching staff to install 3 or 4 situational options to go off.

Welp, Eberflus took questions today, so I guess he's staying.  If he was going to be fired, why allow him to hold his press conference?  The answer is, he's not going to be fired because this organization is a horsefeathers show being held back by ownership.

“Ownership really hates all this losing.” No, they don’t. They waited a day before firing Waldron though and wasn’t he the first coordinator ever fired by the Bears midseason?.

Yep.  It’s the Bears.  Can’t be winners acting like this. It’s not even an endorsement of mediocrity, it’s an inability to do what needs to be done.  Friggin losers.  I hate being along for this ride.  Hate hate hate.

The only solution is a change of ownership, current ownership is incapable of making anything resembling the correct move.  It's really a shame because, Caleb appears to be the kind of QB Bears fans have waiting for all their lives and he's going to be wasted by this joke of an organization.

I think I have settled on Eberflus being the worst Bears coach in my lifetime. I have never seen a coach so adamantly achieve losses out of thin air. It’s incredible, it’s almost a talent.

The John Fox years were the nadir of my Bears fandom, but I could easily ignore them. This team has talent and potential, and Eberflus has doggedly killed them as best as he could. He must be banished, sent to the wilderness, never to return.
