Again, who is this great GM coming to the Bears knowing that they don't get to pick their own coach and they have to deal with a meddling owner? It's not that I think poles is great, it's that I think, given the situation, he's probably as good as it's going to get thanks to this horsefeathers organization.

Eh, if they actually nail the head coaching hire, I don't really think it's a terrible thing if you have to backfill GM with a glorified player of pro personnel type to run the front office (if Poles experiment flames out). Like many NFL structures you'll just have a structure where the HC is equal or above the GM.  Plenty of teams do this.

At this point, Poles biggest accomplishments are having enough guts to lead a tank job and then taking advantage of David Tepper. Everything else is probably replacement level GMing on the whole.

And replace them with who? Who is this great GM who is going to join an organization where they can't even pick their own coach? I'm actually scared Poles is going to end up leaving.

Leaving?  Like on his own accord?  And do what?  Shop around his resume of going 14-32 with a spotty draft record?  I don't even dislike Poles and am ok with keeping him on (but woudn't be against letting him go other), but nothing about his track record in Chicago suggests he can walk away from the Bears job and have opportunities elsewhere.  I'd guess he'd much rather be neutered in Chicago than attempt to find a job elsewhere

I would think so as well.  Yes, he made a great trade that resulted in potentially the best Bears QB in our lifetimes.  He's also horsefeathered up a ton - drafting Velus Jones, neglecting the OL and DL lines, trading for Claypool, signing Davis, retaining Eberflus for 2024, etc. - it's not like he's got some sterling great resume.

I will say that while overall the PC was a typical Bears mess, I did walk away from today with a slightly higher regard for Kevin Warren.  He still might be a stiff that can't even get a stadium deal done, he might have went against his instincts and let Poles keep Eberflus this season, but it seems like he recognized today that Poles can't run football operations unchecked and has decided to step in and "help" Poles run the show.  No idea if his input will be any good but at least he recognizes that horsefeathers needs to change.  Definitely not something Ted Phillips or any of the McCaskeys would ever do.

I like Warren saying this will be the most coveted job because it should be (until the lowball budget comes in)

Yup, they have to pay Flus for 2 more years. They will go cheap like they usually do

I honestly don't think the Bears ownership, owning an asset thats worth around 6 billion dollars, are going to freak out over a few million here or there.

Grandpa used to throw nickles around like they were manhole covers. They absolutely will freak out over a few million

They fought Arlington Heights and the school district for a $4 million property tax break

I dunno maybe I'll end up looking real stupid, but if the McCaskey's were that concerned about a few million, they'd just keep going with Eberflus for a couple more years and let him play out his contract

I don't think its exactly penny pinching that has them do their thing- its organizational inertia and conservatism (not politically, just in terms of how they view their business and the sport)

I've said this a few times in this thread already, but they fought for a $4 million tax break from the Village of Arlington Heights and the local school districts. Their property tax burden was originally $10 million for Arlington Park, but they fought to get it dropped to $6 million. All the while they are delaying where they are building their new stadium in which the cost increases $100-200 million a year. Penny wise, pound foolish.

Annually. The tax burden is an annual issue, not a one time cost. All developers fight property tax assessments. It’s not unique and it’s not an indication of penny pinching.

They traded for Sweat and paid him. Previously, they traded for Mack and paid him. They paid Robert Quinn. They paid Davis. They pay much greater sums every season for talent than what they’ll need to pay a head coach. Eberflus’s contract is a backup long snapper they cut in preseason. It’s meaningless

The Bears were only fighting for two years of property tax reassessment

Mark Potash asked a follow up to Warren on whose decision it ultimately would be when it comes to hiring the next head coach. Warren said he expects be in agreement with Poles, but if not the choice is ultimately Poles’.

I saw it in real time, and all of the different angles. No, it was not clean. There are ways to prevent full impact at the point you see Lawrence going into his slide. Might not be able to stop hitting him entirely, but the high impact at his chest, neck and head area could have been prevented. Dude didn't care to try to avoid it. As has already been said, he's a dirty player. His attitude after the play was over was even worse than the hit, IMO. Evan Ingram gave him a hard shove in the back that knocked his ass to the ground. After that, he acted like he was the only one on the field who was wronged. Will Anderson prevented him from doing any more stupid stuff, and it took several minutes of Anderson holding him back while medics were attending to Lawrence.

Dipshit attempts an apology with this -

“To Trevor I genuinely apologize to you for what ended up happening,” Al-Shaair wrote. “Before the game we spoke and I told you how great it was to see you back out on the field and wished you well. I would never want to see any player hurt because of a hit I put on them, especially one that was ruled ‘late’ or ‘unnecessary.’”

- to me putting quotes around late and unnecessary makes me question the sincerity,  I believe he did it to save his ass from suspension.

He got suspended anyway.

These plays happen so fast. Its easy to watch the replay and call out a player for a mistake, but the clicker makes everything look worse.

That said, the guy is earning a reputation as a dirty player. He deserves any suspension he gets.

No, it’s more than two years. It sets a precedence that continues on if/when they build

The details of the deal revealed Thursday would set the annual tax on the Arlington Heights site at about $3.6 million, down from roughly $8.9 million levied for the 2023 tax year, officials said.

If the team seeks construction permits by the end of 2027, payments would remain the same. If not, payments would increase at the inflation rate of the consumer price index, by 2% to 5%, for 2028 through 2030.
