  1. Generally speaking, yes, it should be enough to get it done since Shaw's present value will almost certainly eclipse the value of any single prospect who'd be on the market and most other teams aren't looking to trade similarly situated major league players at this point. Whether or not Shaw *should* be available is another conversation altogether, but I'd have to think that trade would be better than anything else the Tigers would reasonably expect to receive.
  2. If you can throw 85 mph (or 80 mph lefthanded) and always wanted to be a big leaguer, buy a ticket to his start, because there's a chance your name will be called out of the pen.
  3. In short, it's complicated. Technically, the AH stadium would result in the Bears paying property taxes where they are currently paying none, so in that regard, it would increase the tax revenue. There also is the issue of the tax burden increasing for the local area, especially if AH has to shift it to homeowners if the Bears are paying a substantially lower amount, which is a fantastic way to piss off the locals. So, the question that should be asked is, if the AH site were instead developed as residential/commercial, say like the Glenview Naval Air Station, would that be more beneficial to AH, Cook County, and Illinois than a massive stadium complex? That site won't remain vacant for long if the Bears pull up stakes and move to Hammond, so it's a valid question.
  4. Except the illustration actually supports the contrary point. This season isn't over, and there's a shitload of baseball left to play. Ten losses in a row suck, but the 2017 Dodgers had a 1-17 run, including 11 losses in a row, they still made the WS that year, and they lost the WS in large part because their opponent engaged in a massive cheating operation (cue the Bregman guy). There's nothing wrong with criticizing Hoyer's decisions or individual players, but the people who are ready to walk into traffic over this team would benefit from some perspective.
  5. Are you even reading what you're writing? Because we're not even at the halfway point of the season. All of this hand-wringing could be meaningless in less than two weeks if they go on an 8-2 run.
  6. One of them hasn't been, and that one apparently decided to pay a visit to the Springfield Mystery Spot over the offseason.
  7. Here's the report they were discussing. Pappas was a blowhard, but Andy Grimm actually had a number of interesting points. This was one particularly interesting point that was raised: As those of you in the north/northwest burbs (likely) know, Old Orchard is a bit of a dead zone at the moment with a handful of anchor tenants, along with ongoing discussions regarding converting parts of the mall into residential spaces. The fact that it still pulls in that much tax revenue puts things in perspective regarding the Bears stadium.
  8. You can't convince me that this isn't a money laundering operation.
  9. At the major league level, absolutely. In the minors, they're better off now than they were this time a year ago, as hard as it seems to believe. We've gone from trying to make Nick Dean a thing to having a strong cadre of lower level guys who could find themselves on Top 100 lists (particularly Wing and McGwire) a year from now.
  10. That sums up one of the major issues in a nutshell nicely. If the NFL gets to offload the cost of training and development onto the NCAA, why shouldn't MLB get the same benefit? Perhaps that saves teams money over the short term, but how often are players ready to contribute to a major league team right after the draft, much less AAA or even AA? At least the NFL draft seems to produce dozens of guys who can produce in the NFL their rookie season, but baseball is such a different animal that this mindset makes zero sense to me.
  11. Huh, so we never really started an NFL offseason thread after last season. Might as well start one for the offseason and this coming season. Brian Flores got the green light to continue his discrimination case in the courts. In fairness, having the NFL commissioner be the arbitrator for those disputes is pants-on-head stupid.
  12. I think I might ignore this team for a month just to see where things stand in July.
  13. You consider trading Shaw for someone with multiple years of control, not a rental.
  14. "Our initial goal was to not stay in Chicago, but make it look like we tried."
  15. The Lucas Museum was chased out of Chicago after trying to open a museum on the exact same plot of land. Just horsefeathers leave Chicago already; enough of this pointless dithering.
  16. That's why we have advanced stats and metrics. Sometimes it's bad luck, sometimes they just suck, and those metrics can help suss things out. Right now, the stats and metrics suggest it's been more bad luck than sucking. That tracks for a team that's had two ten game winning streaks before the month of June.
  17. Let's knock it off with comparing the Cubs to individuals with disabilities, shall we?
  18. So could every other non-Twins team in baseball, yet it didn't happen. It's almost as if Joe Ryan wasn't actually available at the deadline or this past offseason.
  19. Fine, throw in SGA and we have a deal.
  20. That depends, does OKC want one of the Bulls' fifty seven 2nd round picks?
  21. Wemby is the real life version of this:
  22. They also have some reinforcements in the high minors that could push them over the top in the ALC come the summer. I also don't want them trading Murakami to the Dodgers, so having them in the hunt is a good thing.
