  1. He's my designated sleeper for 2027. SEC background, rave reviews post-draft for his character and work ethic, dropped in the draft because he was a senior, his bat has stood up so far, and the Cubs seem to believe in him enough to double jump him right out the gate. I don't think he's going to follow Ayers' trajectory, but the toolkit is there for a long career in the majors.
  2. This feels like it would be a 12-0 game by now if Wicks had started.
  3. I thought it would have happened when Virginia McCaskey died based on the absolute mess that happened in Denver after Pat Bowlen died, but the McCaskeys seem to have handled it appropriately and we have heard absolutely nothing about any estate challenges or related issues, which hey, credit where it's due on their estate planning. I don't think the other teams care at this point. It might be something else if the Bears end up on the hook in a massive lawsuit regarding the stadium or if the Bears simply don't have a stadium ready when their lease is up, but for now it doesn't seem to be enough of an issue to force such a drastic move.
  4. I find it kind of crazy that someone's jumping down my throat about a dude I said could one day be good enough to hold down a corner OF spot if he keeps up a 100-ish wRC+ while comparing him to a guy who regularly puts up 4+ WAR for the Cubs.
  5. This is kind of where my question was going, because Hartshorn appears to be the only consensus Top 100 prospect in the system, and generally sits around 50-75 range. I fully accept the fact that Wiggins/Ayers/Kepley/Conrad are all borderline Top 100 types as things currently stand in the system, and I agree that Ayers is the best of the bunch. Where I furrow my brow is...Townsend ahead of those guys? Really? It's not like Townsend was a consensus Top 10 pick who dropped due to bonus demands into the Cubs' laps, so is he really that much better than that tier? Does that speak to the system being weak, Townsend being really good, some combination of the two, or something else? I don't think we're going to see him get any in-game action until next season, either, so this kinda reeks of Shiny New Toy Syndrome more than anything else.
  6. Simple question for @Jason Ross: Why Cade Townsend #2? And yes, I'll have an annoyingly detailed follow-up after you respond. 😃
  7. I tried to tiptoe around this issue, but yeah, this team as-is runs into a potential problem if that version of Kepley is in a corner OF spot in that you're looking at a bunch of guys in the lineup who produce a lot of contact without commensurate power, particularly if Seiya leaves in the offseason. In that scenario, you're looking at PCA, followed by Bregman, Busch, and Dansby for the thump in your lineup, which...engh. It's not to say the Cubs *have* to trade Kepley for him to realize his value, but the Cubs are not presently constructed particularly well for the Nico version of him to take over everyday duties in a corner.
  8. It's part of the reason why I'm back and forth on how to evaluate him (and Ayers, to a lesser extent). On the one hand, he has the sort of present toolkit that says "4th OF in his prime" because you're not entirely sure where his power/hit tool are going to end up once he starts facing ML-quality pitching on the regular, but his defense/speed are strong enough to be an asset off the bench. On the other hand, he's met every challenge, and now that he's in AA and producing, the power/hit concerns are not as prevalent as they were earlier this year. This isn't the sort of thing that comes along frequently enough to build a reliable career projection arc, ya know? I'm still skeptical about the notion that he could regularly be a 15/20 HR threat in the majors, and there's always the chance he falls flat on his face at some point, but even if his bat ends up comparable to Nico's and he's regularly putting up 100ish wRC+ while keeping up his defense and baserunning, that's good enough (although admittedly not ideal) to merit a starting corner OF spot. The fun question I have right now is how to rank Hartshorn, Ayers, Conrad, and him in the system. I get the sense that, by the time the AFL wraps up, all four will be in consideration for various publications' Top 100 lists, and that's admittedly a really fun notion.
  9. Gotta love those little league stand up in the parkers in the minors.
  10. Remember, Conrad likely would have been a Top 5 pick a year ago (in an admittedly down year for the draft) if he had been healthy. We know the talent is there, and he could leapfrog Hartshorn as top prospect in the system with a strong AFL showing.
  11. Small school senior with iffy mechanics, resulting in lack of control and seemingly middling stuff, and no meaningful coaching staff or support system to help him figure things out? We'll see what the offseason does to him, but sometimes guys just need a tweak here or there to figure it out.
  12. This was part of the reason why I didn't submit a list this go-round. I'm a bit shaky on evaluating the new draftees, and I feel like we'll have a much clearer picture post-AFL regarding whether this system is still trending upwards, or if this year's deadline deals offset all of the gains made from the draft. @CaliforniaRaisin Are you saying Wing underwent TJS for his most recent injury? I can't recall seeing anything around here to that effect.
  13. So we'll know Myles Bailey's deal around June next season. Neat.
  14. I want to hear from the F and C votes. I get it if you think it's a B because the Cubs didn't get Skubal and/or because they traded Mo Baller and/or they should have gotten more for Rojas, but they got the second and third best SPs traded at the deadline and also beefed up the pen. But I'd love to hear a serious non-trolling/non-doomboner take.
  15. @Brock Beauchamp Additionally, please add: Dominick Reid, Nazier Mulé, Pierce Coppola, Luis Martinez-Gomez, Johan Geraldo, Isaac Morton, Chase Meyer, and Brennan Hudson
  16. This situation would only affect the Cubs in a single game of the season. If a sniper took out Amaya and Kelly, the Cubs could just hand their gear to Triantos, wish him luck, and call someone up from AAA that evening.
  17. Wasn't it Raffy Palmeiro who won a gold glove at 1B despite only playing there in like 40 games and DHing the rest of the time?
  18. Plus he's gone through some struggles at A+ and seems to be turning it around recently. Let him cook and get his confidence back up, then reevaluate once it's time for playoff assignments.
  19. Sosa, although it took him longer. Check his BB/K from 1997 to 2002.
