It’s not like anyone would want to see Clemson/Maryland or Cal/Oregon either. As was already mentioned upthread, people who weren’t fans (and some who are) weren’t getting hot and heavy over Illinois-OSU who have been playing forever and even have a trophy. And Illinois is kinda an ok team

Purdue is just a weird example to use. Painter has a loss to a non tourney team in 20 out of his 21 seasons. And quite famously lost to a 13, 15, and 16 seed in consecutive tourneys
