Tommorrow night mlb will know the winning bid and pass it on to the posting team ? Correct?

Tomorrow at 5 pm. Then, MLB will pass along the winning bid figure to the Lions (not the name of the team) and they will have 4 business days to accept or reject (so we should know by Tues-Wed of next week?). Then the winning team has 30 days to hammer out a contract with Daisuke.

Damn. I'm getting optimistic. I'm in for a letdown.

Yeah Im really trying not to get excited about this, I think he's going to wind up in NY or maybe Texas.

Yeah, if you want the Cubs to land somebody, you have to think negative about the possibility of getting said player. Which means....(using my own distorted sense of logic)

I do not want this Japanese pitcher anywhere near the Cubs. (And hopefully you understand what I mean)

I merged the threads...lets keep all the Matsuzaka posts here please. We don't need a new thread for each rumor.

I have to say I disagree with this. Threads over 30 pages should be archived and a new thread started. No one wants to read this whole thing and you end up getting repetitive posts.

MOD FIGHT!!

Not really...

I know. Just bored at my desk.

could be fun though

This is a little old (from the 4th), but it states that we could know as early as Thursday what team won. It also mentions that the Yankees won't submit their bid until about 5 minutes before the deadline (let's hope NY has a quick blackout for about 6 minutes tommorrow :D )

Or as Rotoworld suggested, their fax machine dies :D

Maybe that is the reason why there was a "$21 million dollar bid" leaked to the media. If the Yankees are going to wait to the last minute, have them have to "think" about their bid.

I think that what Hendry needs to realize is that the difference between 5 million dollars more than the estimated bids over 4-5 years and getting Daisuke vs. lowballing it and not getting him is black and white. If i think that the Yankees are going to shell out somewhere around 25 mil, than i up it 5 mil just to be safe.

Yeah I agree. Just bid 30 and try to sign the guy for 5-6 years at a good contract. (which would deffinatly be considered "an average" salary compared to some of his overpaid pitcher counterparts). .

I think the Cubs, Rangers and other strong contenders will wait till the last hour too.

So say it cost about $30 million to win the bid, what kind of contract do you think he'd agree to? I'm sure this has been discussed but I don't have time to page through. Also, say the Cubs miraculously won, how would it affect their budget this year? Thanks

meh, nothing new...

An industry source familiar with the Orioles' plans said that the club likely will not put in a bid for Daisuke Matsuzaka before Wednesday afternoon's deadline.

Also, the Phillies ruled themselves out of the bidding on Tuesday. Though we're still crossing our fingers that the Royals will jump in with a $50 million bid, all indications are that it will be a five-team race, with the Yankees the favorites ahead of the Rangers, Mets, Red Sox and Cubs.

most "experts" are saying that he could get 5/50 or 6/60 take that for what you will. If he is getting that much there better be an out clause for who ever gets him in case for some reason he stinks it up. I'm pretty sure that is standard for players who go through the posting system but with super agent Scott Boras doing the negotiating, who knows.

When Seattle got Ichiro the money they used for the posting did not count against that years budget. Although that could be because they did not pay all of the 13 mil that they claimed to for the right to Ichiro. There are widespread allegations that they negotiated an under the table deal to get him. Still, almost everything that I have read has said that the posting fee doesn't get lumped in with this years budget.

Well that is really up to the individual teams.

true, but it seems that teams involved with the posting system have done that in the past. And it would be to their advantage not to lose 20 or 30mil of next years budget on the posting bid alone.

How does a 30 million dollar bid followed by a 5 year/50 mil contract with an team out clause after 2008?

How about a 30 million dollar bid with a 4/30 contract with a player option for the 5th year?

works for me as well.

Question is, how much is boras going to want to string out of the winner.

Considering the "window" for the winner of the bid and Boras/Matsuzaka would have when talking contract. Boras can't really afford to "string out the winner." Right now, if the Cubs win the bid....I would offer Boras/Matsazaka a "generous deal" of 5 yrs $50 mill (as someone allude to earlier) at the start of the negotiations, and tell Boras that the deal won't change much up or down. The franchise that wins the bid, wins all together, whether they signed him or not.

Is there anything to stop a team, say like the Orioles or Blue Jays, from bidding some outrageous number (with no intention of signing the player) so that the Yankees don't win? Because, as I understand, if the teams don't come to a deal, the team gets its bid money back. I think all of MLB would hate that team, so maybe that's the answer to my question.

Yes there is...In fact it was answer earlier in the thread. The cliff notes version of the answer would..if a team is proven o only make a bid (and low ball in neg....), just to keep him away from another team, Selig would pretty much step in, and void the deal. The rights to Matuazaka would go to the 2nd highest bidder.
