A poster on Cubs.com(I know, I know) is claiming that Bruce Levine has been reporting the Cubs have lost the bid. Can anyone else confirm?

First: Wrong Bruce, they are quoting. To me there is a saying, "Bruce Miles with the smiles, Bruce Levine and his craplines." In other words, I would hold what "Levine" and what a "Cubs.com message board poster" say with a grain of salt.

Second: As somebody mention earlier....that poste was made before bids were due in. So unless somebody had the power to see the future, there is no way the cubs.com poster and/or Levine would know if the Cubs lost the bid, before the annoucement of the winner. So...

I heard George Offman at noon say the Cubs are expected to be outbid by the Yankees and Mets. I don't think he has any actual information, just assumptions.

Again, that is simply based on PAST history of the teams and dealings of the International FA. Obviously the Yankees have the most agressive (with Matsui/Contreras and Irabu via trade). The Mets have dabbled, and have been burned with Kaz Matsui. And obviously the Cubs haven't dabbled in the market. But, Hendry MAYBE the most stubborn man in baseball, and if he wants Matsuzaka there is no man that will outbid him. (and that includes Steinbrenner) The only reason why the Cubs won't win the bid, is if Hendry believe Matsuazaka won't be worth the deal he is going to get.

So, I don't necessarily put any stock into what George "Off"man stated earlier. I mean "expected" and "are outbid" is not the same thing.

For those hungering for an answer soon as to who won the bidding, you may want to snack on an NBA game or two to tide you over.

From Buster Olney's article linked a few pages back...

The commissioner's office will determine the highest monetary bid shortly -- probably within hours after Wednesday's deadline -- and without revealing the name of the team that posted the highest bid, that figure will be forwarded through league officials in Japan, to the Seibu Lions, who then will have 96 hours to say whether they accept or reject the fee. At that point, MLB will officially reveal the team that won the bid; it's possible the process could play out within 24 hours.

So the winning bid is given to Seibu Wednesday shortly after the 5pm deadline, but the announcement won't come until, at the earliest, Thursday afternoon, and, at the latest, 96 hours or 4 days later which would be Sunday at 5pm Eastern.

even though i'm fairly sure the cubs wont get him, this is probably the most exciting cub day for me since june.

What happened in June?

EDIT: Barrett punching AJP?

i think that was in may

june was just when i realized how much i hated the cubs and how much happier i would be if i stopped watching the games.

I know I do. The usual "stress" I get from watching the Cubs and the frustration just wasn't there this summer. Besides the Cubs being pathetic, it was fantastic.

Tuesday would be the day. 4 business days are what they count.

xm home plate interview with ?orestes estrada? claimed matsuzaka was legendary since he was 18 when he threw a complete game, closed a game, and another complete game three days in a row at the national championship- kerry wood style. earlier it was said that the lions were using him an awful lot this year, more pitches and IP than ever as a pro, knowing that he was a goner.

i just wonder this over-use is a concern and maybe a longterm commitment is a bad idea.

That's what I thought when I first read about him, maybe he's been overused. Definitely a concern, in my opinion. No matter what, the Cubs are due for a break, so if they get this guy, he better stay healthy.

A Dallas Morning News article raised the injury and pitching abuse issue.

Link.

Here's the line on his final three high school appearances: 17 innings and 250 pitches the first day.a save the next and a no-hitter on the third.

And then this to sum it up.

A man who has pitched 1,402 innings, 500 more than Kerry Wood at the same age, probably should be regarded warily.

Well maybe it will scare off the Yankees and Rangers lol (wishful thinking)

I think the risk is way too high for the price. That being said, the cubs have to take some risks if they plan to win in the near future and there really isn't much out there as far as free agents. I would rather pay this price than Zito's.

I dont know if I would agree with that. I would take the proven major league player over a guy who hasn't even thrown a single pitch in the majors.

So why isn't Zito in your sig?

Zito is in my heart. LOL...I am a big fan of Zito. I have had many Zito avatar's and sigs in the past.

I think this is a legit concern. The 500 innings more than Wood, doesn't say too much given his workload the past 3 seasons, but the amount of abuse Wood took before even being drafted might be similar. No FA pitcher is a lock, and Matsuzaka is a bigger investment than any other pitcher if you include the posting fee.

Winning him will be great, but losing him will not be the end of the world unless the Cards somehow got him :-)

I think Zito is near breakdown as well. I am also not convinced he will look as good playing in a park where flyballs leave the park more regularly.

I dont know much about Matsuzaka, but if he has mechanics like Wood, then I think it would be a huge concern.
