This thread grows faster than I can keep up with, but in case it hasn't been thrown out there, Buster Olney has a nice summary of the process, even touching on the high bid and trade option.

I liken the Matsuzaka fiasco to me winning the lottery. It's fun to play and fun to hope and wish, but I (or the Cubs) really have no shot at winning.

When was the last time we outbid other teams for a high-caliber player?

12/19/01

Are you referring to the past-his-prime signing of Moises Alou?

When was the last time was signed an in-his-prime premiere FA?

recordset rsCubs = null?

Ahh database code humor .. don't see that everyday

Does Andre Dawson count? Age 32 when the Cubs signed him.

I'm finding myself unable to turn off XM Home Plate cause I just can't fathom not knowing the second it's official.

I'd be happier if Rob Dibble would just shut up though.

FUKUOKA -- The talk on the field before tonight's Game 5 at the Yahoo! Dome is that the posting price for Daisuke Matsuzaka will be significantly below the early projections of $20-$30 million. Teams have until 5 p.m. Wednesday EST to submit their blind bids, with the anonymous winner to be turned over to the Seibu Lions, and it sounds like the number will be much closer to the Mariners' bid that won Ichiro Suzuki's negotiating rights -- $11 million -- back in 2000.

Wow, you'd think Sandy Koufax was being signed by the excitement in this thread.

I still think it is a pretty big risk tot ake, committing that much money just for negotiation rights. He may turn out to be as advertised an be a bargain, in the process making me look like an idiot.

I just can't get the Kaz Matsui flashbacks out of my head from a few years back.

Hell even I was excited about Kaz (curse you 1908!). I still have 0 hopes for even winning the bidding however.

Wow. Matsuzaka for under $20 Million posting fee would be a steal. Hopefully that is true and the Cubs win (I know thw Cubs never win).

God, I hate Rob Dibble. I'm gonna have to stop listening to XM hoping for updates.

"Hey, is Marcus Giles a free agent?"

"Yes, yes he is."

Dumbass.

I wonder if the posting fee is too low that the Lions might pull him back. I think they want to get the money to get another player and pay some off their debt.

Maybe no one will get him?

A poster on Cubs.com(I know, I know) is claiming that Bruce Levine has been reporting the Cubs have lost the bid. Can anyone else confirm?

That was posted at noon today... before the bids were in.

Bruce Levine is pretty good. You never know. :^o

boy, this blind posting fee thing really makes it a crapshoot. With the Yankees stating they want him, I have a hard time not seeing him going there. Do the Yankees ever get outbid?

Only if the Yanks do a falt bid of say.....$50 million would they not be outbid. If the amount if lower, say in the $20-30 mill, then sure the Yanks could and will be outbid. If Steiny is obsessed with winning next yr, I could see him ordering Cashman to bi at least $40 mill.

Bruce Levine hasn't been on today, that guy's is blowing smoke.

First: Wrong Bruce, they are quoting. To me there is a saying, "Bruce Miles with the smiles, Bruce Levine and his craplines." In other words, I would hold what "Levine" and what a "Cubs.com message board poster" say with a grain of salt.

Second: As somebody mention earlier....that poste was made before bids were due in. So unless somebody had the power to see the future, there is no way the cubs.com poster and/or Levine would know if the Cubs lost the bid, before the annoucement of the winner. So...
