Make a run at him, if only to try and force the Yankees to spend more. Despite the fact that it's an absurdly high budget, they do have a budget. And money spent on this guy means less money to spend on other guys.

If the Yankees decline to pick up Mussina's option, they will have more than enough money to outbid everyone for Matsuzaka, without any impact to their payroll. Chances the Cubs win this game? Nil.

Chances they don't bring back Mussina next year? Not very large. They might not pick up his option, but talk is they'll be paying him $12m next season.

The bidding process is blind. So the Yankees will have no idea when other teams bid.

They'll have an idea of the interest level of other parties.

Show some interest. Let it be known that you are going to bid, unlike in the past, when Hendry eliminated himself from talks involving top players early.

Having flashbacks to a few years ago when Kaz Matsui was all the rage.

Not against the Cubs making a run, but they better be very sure they know what they are getting.

The Yankees are expected to make serious runs at both Zito and Schmidt, which is another 26 million a year, or so. They are already looking to spend big-time, so it should not be a given they have the resources to outbid everyone else.

It'll be interesting to see how it plays out. It's not an auction like free agency. You get one bid. You have no idea what others will bid or have bid -- even if they bid. Sure, they might suggest some amounts, but they might be bluffing too.

FYI.

San Diego Union Tribune[/url]"] Towers also is calculating yen-to-dollar currency rates. Randy Smith, the club's international scouting chief, recently returned from Japan, where he saw third baseman Akinori Iwamura, right-handed ace Daisuke Matsuzuka and a left-handed reliever or two. “We plan to be very aggressive in the Japanese market,” Towers said.

With Aramis getting a small raise and the money you will need to lock up Zambrano, its almost as if you get one choice: Matsuzaka, Zito, Schmidt, Soriano, or C. Lee.

Not unless the payroll is raised slightly. Because even after all that you'd still probably have $5-$8 mil leftover.

If Hendry doesn't even make a bid I will be severely dissappointed.

Why would you be disappointed. The Cubs didn't get in the bidding for Irabu/Nomo/The Matsui's/Johima/Ichiroi/Sasaki, etc, etc, (I grant that outside of Sasaki/Ichiro/H. Matsui/Iguachi the Jampanese imports have been "crap" at the major league level. It doesn't change the Cubs/Hendry's MO, of not looking at all arenas ML talent that can help their team. My guess is...Hendry won't even go near the bidding for the "latest Japanese rage."

Other than Matsuzka, what other Japanese players are FA or likely to be posted?

Here's a quick list of some players of note. I'd take his predictions with a grain of salt. You can find career stats for the players listed at japanesebaseball.com.

There aren't any CF on that list. :(

Wow this is interesting. A real ace on the market to join Zito. Wonder if that'll affect Zito and Schmidt's price tags.
