Cubs need to get this guy. Bottom line.

They can make up alot of the bid $$$ in marketing/merchandise revenue.

Not really. Merchandise revenue is shared nearly equally among the teams, so there's little merchandising revenue to be gained.

The only marginal revenue oppornunities are higher TV ratings or the notion that a high profile signing will support higher ticket prices.

Would the Cubs get money from broadcasting games in Japan?

International TV revenue is split equally among the teams like merchandise revenue is.

So, the yanks and mariners only make money with Japanese billboard ads in the stadium? If thats it, then the cubs wouldn't get any appreciable extra revenue from Matsazuka.

Schmdit's fastball was at 88mph at the end of the year. He is a power pitcher. He needs that 95mph fastball to have his greatest success in the big leagues.

I don't think he's ever thrown 95. He's thrown 88-91 pretty much his whole career. The only red flag that Zito raises is the walks. That was a very Cub-like performance this year. Just imagine:

Zito + Rothschild=160+K's, 120 BB

I think Daisuke Matsuzaka will have great success in the big leagues. Hitter's wont have a clue at first against him. Im not sure why kind of pitcher he is. Is he a power pitcher? Or is he a guy who locates all his pitches pretty well?

He's all three. Four-seamer mid 90's, sinker around 92, excellent curve and change (and occasional gyroball) and pinpoint control.

eh his sinker/two seam is a pitched he has just developed the last 10 months or so. He never threw it in a game until the WBC, and I don't think it has been an integeral part of his arsenal this season and when he does throw it it's in the 89-90 range. His fastball far from sits in the mid 90s. He rarely throws 95 and sits 91-93. However it's a lot like Prior's FB in that hes got pinpoint command with it and great life.

he throws a curve, but his slider is his best offspeed pitch. His fork/split is pretty good.

¥330,000,000 --> about $2,750,000.

The more I think about it, and with the news of an increase in spending this season, the more sense it makes for the Cubs to be the high bidder for the bargaining rights to Matsuzaka.

Come on, get this guy.

Well the more you see Randy Johnson suck the more I think that George will outbid everyone by 10 mil to be safe.

Let George resign the Moose, and get Zito and Schmidt. The Cubs can have Matsuzaka. 8)

Huh? He's like the highest paid player in Japan.

But he's under the team's control, so the team has that plus the precedent working against him. Ichiro was < 6 mil when he was posted the first year (3 years, 15 mil total), he didn't make 8 digits until he signed his new extension.

Not true. The past few years Schmidt has been consistently clocked in the 94-96 range when healthy. I've watched my fair share of Giants games.

this is a completely different case.

Will the posting fee come out of this year budget of 115?

Depends on the team. The Mariners didn't consider Ichiro's posting fee part of the team payroll at the time.

Billboard ads and money from the influx of Japanese tourists to the ballpark.

1908, do you think Hendry even knows who this guy is?

And possibly broadcasting games in Japan, no?

So you think Daisuke would refuse to sign with the high bidder and play one more season in Japan if he doesn't get 8 digits? I just don't see him insulting the Lions like that after they finally agree to post him, and that's the only negotiating leverage he has if he's posted.

I don't think the Cubs will go after him. I suspect Hendry knows something about him.

It's my understanding that MLB owns all international broadcast rights, and all the teams share that revenue equally.

1908 or anyone,

What do you think it will take to be the high bidder? If you ask me, the Cubs need to be the high bidder. I think this is priority number 1 this off season.

I don't see anyone outbidding the Yankees. George is convinced starting pitching is to blame for their early exit from the playoffs, and he wasn't very happy when the Mariners outbid him for Ichiro. If the Yankees end up doubling the amount of the second-highest bid, I wouldn't be shocked.

Not really.

What the teams share is revenue from "advanced media", which is basically comprised of satellite radio, and MLB's online subscription-based services like MLB.TV.

Traditional TV broadcast rights are divvied up amongst the clubs geographically, and the revenues these sources provide are kept by the individual clubs. (This is a big part of what produces the "haves" and "have nots" around the league -- the Yankees can sell their broadcast rights in their region for way way more $$$ than the Royals can sell their rights in their region for.)

Anyway, MLB has placed Japan in the SEA and NYY "regions". Meaning, SEA and NYY have the rights to sell their broadcasts in Japan, but no other clubs do.

Here's a look at MLB's territorial map of the US.

http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/sp/tools/med/2006/06/ipt/1150742098.jpg

There's a similar international one out there somewhere that has "SEA NYY" stamped on Japan, and "TOR" stamped on all of Canada.
