Yeah, I doubt we'll hear the announcement tonight.

*sigh* maybe some kind of leaked hint? I think the rest of the offseason after Matsuzaka is gone is going to be pretty boring. I dont think Schmidt or Zito are going to want to come to play for us and I cant really get all that excited about Soriano or Lee. Its really a pretty weak free agent market and we dont have alot of chips for trading.

The suspense is killing me though...

Well, a leak would run counter to the process since the Lions aren't supposed to know which MLB team gave the winning bid. The leak would have to come from the commissioner's office, I doubt that'd happen (at least not immediately). I'm sure it will eventually come out before the 4 days Seibu has.

it sounds like accepting the bid is just a formality. someone posted a link that the seibu owner needs the $$, has been losing at the track, etc. maybe if they're in a big hurry they might accept immediately to get the clock started on the contract negotiations.

is it possible that the amount of the winning bid could be announced, but not the team making that bid?

Anything is possible... but I don't even see what good that would do us.

If the number is announced, presumably the winning team would know they won, which could lead to a leak from that team.

Is there really any benefit to the team to wait to accept? My guess is you might wait to think about it if the winning big was much lower than expected. But as long as it's pretty high, and you think there's a good chance that team will ultimately sign the guy, why not do it immediately?

I think the winning bid will be lower than expected because of the Boras factor. He isn't going to let the kid sign a lowball contract because he can always come back next year for his big payday.

Our best hope might be a $20 million posting fee and a 3/35 contract that releases Daisuke as a free agent at the end. so 3/55. Steep, but we have to do something.

Actually word out of Seibu is they would accept the bid immediately - so we could very well hear tonight or if not, then tomorrow morning. Edited by wilk

For what it's worth, the Score is reporting that the Cubs bid 20M and that it is also believed to be too low.

I will never believe the score. Specially if that guy Offman reported it. I believe he was taking off the baseball beat last year for giving out false information.

Just like the rumor the other day, I cannot believe that the Cubs would release their number before the deadline. Some teams haven't even bid yet, and if a team is going to leak their bid, they might as well have not made one. So my inclination is to dismiss this completely (although I don't think the Cubs will be the high bidder)

i would really hate to see them pay a posting fee that high and only get him for 3 years. how about 25 and 5/50 or 6/55? i thought boras has been saying a 5-6 yr deal is what he's expecting, but maybe that was just speculation here.

If the Cubs actually bid that, I doubt they would allow it to leak. Either a) this is complete B.S. or b) they actually bid more and leaked a lower number to make the Yankees believe they dont have to bid some crazy high number to win him.

I'd guess a.
