I read somewhere that MLB had admonished clubs not to discuss their bids.

Does that include Boras?

Boras won't know until Seibu accepts the bid.

"They said they will not make a decision on whether to accept until after a meeting of their board of directors -- not expected to be held before Friday at the earliest.'

Of course they are a day ahead (our Thursday is their Friday) so maybe we'll hear something this evening.

One can only hope......

Well, it's about midnight in Japan right now. If their board meets in the morning, they could conceivably let MLB know by noon their time...or about midnight here tonight. Then Selig would have to call the winning team, Boras, etc etc. This probably wouldn't be announced at a Press Conference until tomorrow morning. And this is if and only if Seibu's board meets in the morning. In other words, I don't think we'll hear until tomorrow morning at the earliest.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the Yankees won.

I'm going out on a bigger limb and say the Cubs were in the top 4 for bidding.

So as usual, we will have bid just enough to lose but say we tried?

Did you expect anything more? When was the last time we roped in a top tier FA that wasn't our own?

I'm thinking Andre Dawson?

And that was only because Dawson gave them a blank check.

He paid the Cubs? WOW!

Well, (773) 404-CUBS was not able to provide me with any addition information on Matsuzaka. But they did offer to mail me a pocket schedule.

Why would they have to consider this? They could have done this weeks ago. "if it's above X we say yes"

Thinking about it with the money actually on the table? I don't get it

(and yes, i'm just whining because I'm impatient)

Maybe not everyone involved is convinced letting go of the biggest star and talent remaining in Japanese baseball two years before you have to is a good idea.

That decision should have been made before they posted him.

Yeah, but aren't the Lions in some financial trouble? Kind of hard to turn down $20+ million dollars.

Why? They have four business days to decide now that they know the offer.

I don't think they'll turn it down. Just suggesting a possible reason why they don't seem to be rushing to accept the offer right away.

not to mention he wants to come to the U.S., so not accepting it would just mean they'd have an upset player next year.

What I'm saying is they should have decided whether or not they were willing to let him go before posting him. They should already know how much it will take for them to accept the bid. They have 4 days, and they have every right to wait. Businesses do this sort of thing all the time. I'm not begrudging them that. But the point is the wait is most likely not about suddenly thinking about what they were giving away. Business people like to be deliberate whenever possible, dotting all i's and crossing the t's.

I wasn't suggesting a sudden change of heart -- just that some of the deciders might still be reluctant about it. But it's more likely they're just being meticulous as you suggest.

With absolutely no leverage. The players association in Japan is a joke. He's wanted to come to the US for years, and that desire means little to most of the NPB teams.
