Honestly, letting Eberflus remain the head coach pretty much clinches a 4-13 finish with a pick inside the top 10.  So adding more talent to a team with an already decent roster and a QB.  Beyond that, since ownership isn't changing, they're going to have to luck into good coaching.  Whomever they ultimately line up as candidates it won't be McCaskey-Poles proof, it's going to have to be the luck of the draw.

I haven't watched much football in the last couple decades, and am only slowly regaining a passing interest. So please excuse this if it's a dumb question.

My understanding was that Poles was regarded as a good-to-great GM if for no other reason than the absolute steal of a deal with Carolina where the Bears traded down their #1 pick for this year's #1 pick and a bunch of additional stuff. A couple months ago I was seeing it lauded as one of the most lopsided trades of all time.

What happened there? Or was that just the lone good spot in an otherwise-terrible performance as GM?

Yes, there aren't any good internal options to take over for the remainder of the season.

But the remainder of the season is already lost. The players want change. They'd probably prefer Eric the Clown over Eberflus at this point.

Respect the players. Fire Eberflus.

Yea I think his one trade coup is doing a lot of heavy lifting on his record.  I've never been a huge fan.

But it's also entirely possible that his failed Head Coach hire is tanking like 70% of his work.  Whether he was freely his hire or forced on him or working off a restricted list has had a lot of speculation, but no one really knows.  On the record he is "Poles guy" per Poles. For whatever that was worth.

Let whichever coach wins the 8A IHSA state title game take over for the last 5 games. It really doesn't matter who it is lol

He’s had some wins and losses and I would rate him as a slightly above average GM. Good: Caleb, DJ, the Carolina trade in general, Wright, B. Jones, Sweat. Bad: Eberflus, neglecting the center, Davis, V. Jones, Claypool. Poles has assembled what should be a .500 roster this season that should be a playoff team next year. But I can’t blame anyone for wanting him gone too.

The shot Caleb took from the Lions LB was it cheap?  Appeared to me Caleb was starting to go down and the LB targeted his knee.

Caleb thinks so

Better question had that been a Bears player hitting Goff would a flag have been thrown?  I say, 100% yes, earlier in the game they manufactured a roughing the passer call against the Bears, there's no doubt in my mind that would have drawn a flag.

Next season how could the Bears HC job not be in the most demand?  Think about it, a QB, decent roster and an ownership that'll give you multiple chances no matter how badly you horsefeathers up,  What's not to like?  It's got to be the most desirable job out there and it's not even close.

I think I have settled on Eberflus being the worst Bears coach in my lifetime. I have never seen a coach so adamantly achieve losses out of thin air. It’s incredible, it’s almost a talent.

The John Fox years were the nadir of my Bears fandom, but I could easily ignore them. This team has talent and potential, and Eberflus has doggedly killed them as best as he could. He must be banished, sent to the wilderness, never to return.

He's lost the locker room harder than trestman did, and trestman's locker room was doomed from the start.

Allegedly no decision has been made and won't be for at least a couple days. Which, on theme with the season, is the worst possible way of handling it

Will Poles ever get fed up and say to McCaskey - "listen, you dumb horsefeathers, your HC has lost the support of the players, he must be terminated, now" - or something to that extent?  Most anyone, regardless of how professional their approach, would reach a boiling point as these dumb founded loses pile up.

Guess Poles just did say something to that extent to McCaskey, if he did, I'll give him credit for trying to start to get it right.

Why did they let him speak to the media?

Because he's a nice boy who doesn't cuss?  But, seriously, I don't believe McCaskey was going to fire him, think Poles laid on the line for him.

Sorta. But Caleb just be smart and get out of bounds. Don’t try to fake out the defender.
