What does everyone here think the Cubs could of got in return for Maddux from the Dodgers? To think they could of got a top prospect is just insane.

I was dreaming big with LaRoche and I knew it wasn't happening in all likelihood. I would have taken a C level prospect in short season A ball over this garbage.

It's not like Maddux has been a stud this or anything....

Seriously what did we expect to get for Maddux and Walker?

no salary in return. no crap players taking up roster spots in return.

Yeah, I'm not complaining that they didn't get enough, I'm complaining that they actually made the team worse.

again....we expected to not lose the utility one could obtain from the 4+ million dollars owed to Itzuris next season. Itzuris provides a now very, very, very redundant service to this team.

Getting nothing back would literally have been better.

Thats a joke. I rather get something, rather than nothing for him.

why didn't you just take the great prospect deal then? you disgust me mr hendry. since your new draft guru is from toronto, you brought in a player that he had there. the way you work is laughable.

hey, let's spend 4 million dollars (actually 6 million since their giving money to LA) on a guy who can do no better than the guy making league minimum.

Brilliant.

until 2005, arguably the best SS in the NL? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

he seriously did not say that.

Dude, he topped a .700 OPS in 2004!

The official press release is up on the front page. Here's the body:

The Chicago Cubs today acquired Gold Glove infielder Cesar Izturis from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for right-handed pitcher Greg Maddux.

Izturis, 26, owns a .979 career fielding percentage (2632 TC/54 E) in 630 games, including a .989 mark (185 TC/2 E) at second base and a .980 mark (2357 TC/48 E) in 559 games at shortstop. He won the Rawlings Gold Glove award in 2004, logging a .985 fielding percentage (674 TC/10 E) as the Dodgers everyday shortstop.

Izturis was named to the 2005 National League All-Star team thanks in part to his club-record 75 hits over the first two months of the season. His year was cut short with degenerative arthritis in his right elbow, which required season-ending Tommy John surgery on September 16.

This season, the switch-hitter has batted .252 (30-for-119) with seven doubles and 12 RBI in 32 games after returning from the 60-day disabled list on June 20. He has seen action at second base, third base and shortstop this season.

Maddux, 40, is 9-11 with a 4.69 ERA (71 ER/136.1 IP) in 22 starts this season. He ranks in the top-10 in numerous Cubs franchise records, including fourth with 1,305 strikeouts and fifth with 298 starts, while his 133 victories ranks 13th.

Maddux signed with Chicago as a free agent prior to the 2004 season, rejoining the club he had left after the 1992 season. He’s compiled a 38-37 record with a 4.26 ERA (272 ER/574.0 IP) in 90 starts since his return. For his career, Maddux is 327-200 with a 3.06 ERA in 665 career games (661 starts) over 21 Major League seasons. His 327 career wins rank 12th in Major League history.

Gee, I wonder what aspect of his game they're going to try and sell to the fanbase. Could it be his...defense?

I can't wait to watch him field groundballs at SS for the Cubs, as we lose games 4-1.

They forgot to mention Greg's superior Gold Glove record.

Stupid.

Press Conference:

Says he talked to Dodgers about top prospects... The excuse why that didnt go through seemed to be that the Dodgers needed them for the Lugo deal so it "worked out better for everyone" I didn't hear this exactly but thats what I got from it.

God this season sucks

Just to play devil's advocate, Izturis was an All-Star in 2005, and was leading MLB in hits in June 2005 before he got hurt and his production declined.

So is there actually a chance this will turn out well for the Cubs?

It was a fluke. His minor league numbers are the same as his major league numbers. He's never done much over a larger sample size.

if the choice was to

1) trade Maddux for Izturis, give the Dodgers $2M, take on the remainder of Izzy's contract

2) Keep Maddux until the end of the year

3) Trade Maddux for a mid-level prospect, pay them some cash and be done with it

I'll choose #3, then I'd fall back on #2.
