"Rusch will be ready to go Thursday"

I want to die.

Is that a real quote?

paraphrasing, but that was the jist.

Ugh. I need a drink.

Sorry, Hendry tapped it about an hour ago.

Let me get this straight, we trade Walker so Perez can play 2B and we trade Maddux so Izturis can play SS. We now have a great defensive middle IF, but the problem is that we gave up the pitcher who forces ground balls. We now have pitchers in the rotation who give up fly balls to our weak-armed outfielders. Thank God, Perez and Izturis will provide enough offense to overcome our pitching problems.

Ok..now we have Izturis, and he is pretty terrible. What is the most reasonable best case scenario? The only thing I can think of is that Izturis replaces Cedeno after the season at short and then they sign a second baseman. It's still worse than what we were yesterday, but it is possible they do that. I can't think of any other scenario that is decent at all.

There's no point in trying to find the best case scenerio. hendry will do the worst case scenerio.

How do you get this high up in baseball when your evaluation of talent is this crappy?

It's not even just poorly evaluating talent. It's also a total lack of understanding basic economics.

I thought a quote by Buster Olney on ESPNnews was telling.

He said (I'm paraphrasing) that the Dodgers were about to give up on getting Maddux until they learned that Hendry would do it for "only" Izturis and then they "jumped" at it.

Yah Vance - that is pretty depressing to hear. There's an awful lot of companies out there that would fire people in a heartbeat over the amount of $$ wasted by this organization the last few years.

Cubs package Cedeno in a deal with other players for a top pitcher or hitter in the offseason. They'll have the depth at 2B/SS with guys like Fontenot, Theriot, Izturis, and Neifi able to play there. Cedeno has the highest ceiling of the four and might be able to attract some interest from a team looking to add cheap middle infield help.

Ugh. I need a drink.

I've been saying that on a daily basis this year...

May I suggest:

Don't have time to sift through all of the posts here - and I also don't need to exponentially increase my anger at this moment by re-processing what just happened - but has there been any announcement on how we are going to account for another pitcher entering into the rotation? Is Fatass back in now?

Soriano and Nevin didn't move.

Just goes to show how bad the Cubs are. No one in the entire league wanted our starting 2B/1B or our #4 starter. They combined netted an A ball prospect and a SS with a bad limb and no stick. The rest of the year will be awful. At least this opens a rotation spot for Hill/Guzman unless Rusch starts.........

You are wrong. Best case scenario is Cubs package Cedeno, and Murton, for a better fielding left fielder than Murton.

I like this deal. Now Hendry can try to get Tejeda this off-season, and move Izturis to 2b.

I'm going to pretend I didn't see this post. There's nothing to like about having someone on the same offensive level as Neifi playing every day. Not to mention he'll be getting paid more than Neifi to be Neifi for 2+ more years.

So basically you would of just kept Maddux, and let him walk for nothing? Izturis was a solid player in 04. .288 Average .330OBP 4hr 62RBI 25SB, not to mention the guy is excellent with the glove.

Izturis is far worse than nothing. I would have rather given Maddux away for a ziplock bag of air.

Hahahahah.

*sigh*

wow. this sucks.

On second thought, I'd even prefer a ziplock bag of fartgas. I'd only have to smell it once and it wouldn't cost me $4.5 millon.

I stop caring about Cubs baseball until this regime is removed.

Might as well drink tap water in that case.

Alright there has to be some light at the end of this tunnel doesn't there? Okay, probably not but I'll try to spin this into the best case scenario. Let me preface this by saying I absolutely hate the deal.

Izturis will be 27 next year and playing in a contract year. As we all know age 27 is often a breakout or peak year and we know that players sometimes tend to play over their career norms in a contract year.

In '04 Izturis hit .288/.330/.381. Pre AS break '05 he hit .275/.322/.338 when he was healthy.

So as horrible as he's been offensively in his career if he gets back to '04 levels he's at least average as a SS. There's a slight possiblity that he could exceed that given his age and contract status.

I know, it stinks. Let's just hope it works out for the best somehow or he suddenly has a Barrett-like resurgance.
