You people are insane. Pitching and defense wins championships, not your sabremetrics/OBP/VORP crap. Yes, you can tell a lot about a player by numbers - but PITCHING AND DEFENSE WINS.

I love this move.

Besides, you can get your precious OBP from other positions. If I was a GM, all I want from my C, 2B, SS, and CF is DEFENSE.

Oh, and stop hanging jmajew to the cross because his opinion differs from your own. You people are half communist sometimes.

Thanks for the sarcasm. It just seems that everyone on this board puts very little emphasis on the art of scouting.

That's pretty funny considering we have a professional scout as a member of the forum.

I place a very, very large emphasis on scouting -- even more than I used to, in fact. However, completely ignoring actual production in the big leagues is a huge mistake, as well.

Well I apologize if I offended you.

I just feel that putting such a huge emphasis on a players stats when he was only between teh ages of 21-24 in the big leagues is also a mistake. He was in over his head. I personally believe he can resort back to that form of 330 OBP maybe i'm wrong but only time will tell. If he can do that then I will be ecstatic because of how good his defense is.

Fine i'm an idiot and all of you are right.

There is more to baseball than stats. All of these GMs that rely on stats have not won a World Series, besides Epstein but he is different from teh rest of them because of his extremely high payroll.

There is no possible way a guy can go from being a genious back in 2003 to a complete moron now. This is all hyporcitical.

By God, you're right! John Schuerholtz, Bill Stoneman, they don't give a rats' ass for stats! They just go out there and acquire players who just look good dag nabbit! Any time they see a computer, they get the urge to pull out a Louisville Slugger and tee off on it because computers are the devil!

Stats LIE to people! They are a horrible evil that should be wiped from the planet. I don't care if stats tell me that Neifi Perez is one of the most worthless hitters in the history of baseball, by God, HE LOOKS LIKE A BASEBALL PLAYER! He has to be great!

Who gives a crap about walks? Only sissies and women take the damn things. Real men swing at every pitch they think they can hit, no matter how far out of the zone it is!

Arthritis? Pft, Izturis can get over that. Arthritis is a temporary thing; thats' what my gut tells me!

Enough with the shenanigans, here's my bottom line.

This organization hasn't won anything of value in nearly 100 years. It's been over 60 years since they even made it to the friggin' World Series. I know they've almost made it on a few occasions, but almost only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.

This organization celebrates when the team posts back to back winning seasons. That's not a good thing; that's an absolute disgrace.

Hendry has made a few good moves in the past (Nomar, Hawkins, Ramirez), but it's clear the direction this organization is moving is a terrible one. This team has a $100m payroll and yet they're only ahead of the D-Rays, Royals, and Pirates in terms of record? They're seriously among the worst in the league in runs scored and in various pitching categories; is this a joke?

I've had enough of the way the front office thinks. They think OBP is only important, but that guys who have high averages are preferable because they simply MUST have good OBPs! They don't preach good plate discipline and they have an incompetent coaching staff in the majors. Why the hell do you think it's been so long since this organization actually turned out a competent position player?

Enough already with the dinosaur way of thinking; it doesn't work. This team won't go anywhere if it continues being stubborn in its line of thinking.

When was acquiring Hawkins considered a good move? His stay here was an absolute disaster. That being said the rest is spot on :)

Then you would suck as a GM.

Hawkins was considered a great move when it happened. It was Dusty putting him in as closer that was the stupid move.

Hawkins was lights-out as a setup man before Dusty ruined his confidence by making him close.

And, wow, you have the authority to dole out such opinions. There's a reason why Hendry is a GM and you're sitting in a lazyboy, I dont care how many posts you have.

Hawkins to the Giants for Williams and Aardsma was what I was referring to.

I think that's the only sell Hendry actually pulled off well during his time with this team.

That's the trouble of ever thinking that signing a middle reliever is a great move.

I took no offense, I am merely pointing out that you may want to be careful with your generalizations about the community.

What's the point of having a great starting 5 if the bullpen f's it up every other game?

1) everyone needs to chill on the insults

2) Just because someone has a job, that doesn't mean that he's doing it well. I think the Cubs' record clearly reflects the type of job Hendry did assembling this team.

I don't care how many posts I have either, nor do I care about the antiquated thoughts of a bunch of people who put a great deal of faith in fat old men who stare at young boys all days and come up with silly adjectives to describe how they move.

I'm not the only one who finds most scouting reports really creepy, am I?

Jim Hendry posts here???? Holy crap, we're in the presence of greatness!!!! Or maybe just great amounts of dumbness.

You're telling me you would take a Neifi Perez type player at those positions and Alfonso Soriano at all the others and you think you can win? That's the kind of logic that has prevented the Cubs from winning for nearly 100 years.

Now there's at least one member who might take that as a compliment, but I think most of those who differ with jmajew are pretty much red-blooded capitalists (not that communists don't have red blood too). As such, we have an aversion to over-spending for under-production.

capitalism is actually much more inefficient than communism. if you lived in a commune, your basic living expenses for one year would be around $10,000.

that's because it's not really an art, it's a guessing game.

It's a skill that some are better than others.

true, but to say that most it is more than a guessing game would probably be wrong.

Just look at the title of this thread. Negativity reigns supreme on this message board.

How many games under .500 are the Cubs?

I don't know if you were here in the preseason, but most of the regular posters predicted a poor season. It's not as if no one saw this coming.

This thread would be mainly positive if Hendry had traded for even a midlevel prospect, but instead he got someone who doesn't fill a need and will be paid a lot of money to not fill that need.

I went to 25 games last year at Wrigley and several road games, but I sold all my tickets before the season started this year. It's not because I'm negative, it's because I didn't want to watch the product of such poor decision making.

If the Cubs would give us something to be positive about, we'd be positive. This is a move that will hinder us from winning a world series.
