Holmes or someone of his ilk/Gausman/Boyd/Shota isn’t the 90s Braves by any stretch, but they can generally keep you in games. And if the wheels come off one of them down the stretch, you can dip into the depth of Cabrera, Peterson, some sort of Brown/Steele piggyback scenario, etc.

Yep. Compared to what we've had to endure the last couple months, it's better, sure. But we need to probably stop a little short of calling Boyd/Shota/Gausman some 'solid' pitching rotation. 149 starters have pitched at least 50 innings this year. In FIP, Gausman is 42nd, Boyd is 44th, Shota is 93rd. It remains a weakness.

I think a little re-calibration is probably in order. I think putting him in the same tier as Rojas/Hartshorn feels like that's how teams are treating him. Cubs included. 

It makes the lack of a trade a bummer. But maybe I'm also equally as excited about how the Cubs are treating him.

I definitely have all three of Hartshorn, Ayers, and Rojas sitting in the same bucket. In front of that bucket I have a big sign that says “Will trade for pitching.”

The thing about the playoffs is that they are now played completely different than the regular season.  Yes you'd absolutely like 3 shutdown starters, but the Cubs cobbled together a bunch of worn down mid pitchers last year and managed to be within 1 run of the Brewers for a trip to the NLCS in the 8th inning.  That game was started by Drew Pomeranz and the only thing close to a starter that pitched in that game was the 2.2 IP that Rea gave us.

Not saying you can survive for 4 rounds with that method but if healthy (HUGE IF of course), I like the guys the Cubs have lined up better than last year.  And if we can have Brown or Steele available to give us 2-3 IP that bodes even better for us.

Pretty sure Alcantara is leftover from the Rizzo trade with the Yanks.

Yeah but like, the pitchers the dodgers and brewers use to cobble together games are always better than ours.
