And again, this certainly doesn't help the prospects for a full season of baseball next year.  The Dodgers aren't doing anything wrong, but they are maximizing every single advantage they have and it is nowhere near a level playing field.

And this is before they give Skubal 10 years/450 mil in the offseason with 200 mil deferred. Can't wait for that

Yep, I willing to lose a year of baseball if it meant MLB can erase the Dodgers competitive avantage.

And I guess we will have to contend with Skubel on Monday or Tuesday since he last started two days ago. 😞

There needs to a strong, iron clad salary cap and if that means an empty line in between 2026 and 2028, then so be it.

I think this trade seals the deal for baseball in 2027.  The Dodgers will throw Skubal a crazy, near decade long contract with deferred money around the time the CBA runs out between MLB and the MLBPA, he will accept it, owners will lose their mind with the stranglehold the Dodgers have on baseball, and the MLBPA will stand strong with not wanting a salary cap.  Just my two cents...

Theyll probably hold him til Friday to face Arizona, give him the extra rest

The Dodgers situation isn't the players' fault either, but it is going to leave them facing a significant uphill battle in the court of public opinion during CBA negotiations.

All the owners have to say is, "Look at the Dodgers, We must have a salary cap for the good of the sport.". Obviously that isn't telling the whole story, but it's a simple argument that a large majority of fans will agree with.

The dodgers picking up the immaterial salary that the brewers were publicly willing to pick up isn’t going to change anything from a bargaining standpoint.

the dodgers will have a top five farm system next year. Whether that’s because of the superior way they produce players or the way they get a 27 year old pitcher to still be a top 70 prospect…who knows. But this trade is not a revenue issue.

Everything is a revenue issue.

The Dodgers can make this trade because:

(a) They are confident they will be able to sign Skubal to a long term deal in the offseason

- and -

(b) Even if they don't, they will have money to throw around at whatever next best option(s) is out there

Surely there are many teams who could have beaten this offer if they wanted to, but the risk/reward of a high-value rental is more favorable for the Dodgers than for other teams.

They would have had the same exact opportunity to negotiate with Skubal in the offseason whether or not this trade took place. Tonight, they traded for two months of him. Nothing more.

There was probably a pre trade agreement that Skubel will sign long term. Make the trade now and maximise your WS chances for 2026. I’d say that’s more important to them than some prospects, who might or might not make it at the ML level. It sucks, but we all wish we would do the same.

With that said, Dodgers are definitely beatable this year, even with Skubal.

Just saw that Diaz was activated a few days ago.   Snell and Glasnow are on their way back, and rehab assignments now.  They'll soon have 5 SP better than any of ours.  Diaz and Scott etc in the pen, plus one of Snell/Glasgow could move to the pen too and piggyback.

They just have to get Tucker going by the playoffs.

They are still beatable.

The Dodgers are making George Steinbrenners Yankees look like the Ricketts owned Cubs. The competitive balance is horsefeathered. Ohtani will receive $680 of his $700 million between 2034 and the 2040’s and none of it will impact their payroll or have any LT implications. It’s ridiculous. He’s $680 of their $1 billion of deferred money owed too.

A trade has nothing to do with the extension. Teams do not operate like that. Tarik Skubal is hitting FA still. His agent is Scott Boras. Remember when the Dodgers traded for Trea Turner and then didn't resign him?

Everyone wants to make everything the Dodgers do to be some indictnent of baseball, but that's unfair. Today the Dodgers traded prospects for 2 months of a good baseball player. Why? They develop well. They identify talent well. In fact, the Brewers get a competitive advantage in prospects because they get more picks; they develop well too. They could have beat this (Quero or Lara, for example are premium positions) and still had tons of prospects. They probably should have if we are being honest.

This is not going to change the next CBA, however. This isn't the first time a very good team traded prospects at the deadline to get the best available player. I get that people are tired of the Dodgers doing things and would like another team to sign Skubal but the Dodgers ability to sign him hasn't changed today. I get that people are tired of the Dodgers winnings things too. I don't really  find this a uniquely "Dodgers only" way of doing baseball, however. They may have the financial ability to out kick their coverage of prospects down the road, but this is more about their ability to be a good baseball organization than anything. The Brewers have the ability to out kick their coverage in prospect acquisition getting comp picks. They probably should have leveraged that here themselves.

EDIT: Ken Rosenthal wrote an article about it today that is quite measured. And I think it explains this in a way I can't. Basically, the Dodgers are good at this. At all of this. Yes they have revenue sharing issues and yes, they have a benefit in finances that others don't. But this trade isn't really about that, either. Source.

So going back to trade speculation instead of discussing the Dodgers and if they are ruining the game, anything going on with the Cubs. I read asks for quality starters (rental or with control) are ridiculous now. And that might not chance. So where is everyone at in their thoughts. If Peralta, Holmes or Mize cost Ramirez do the Cubs so it? If Detmers or Soriano cost Ramirez, Wiggins and Ayers + would that be ok? Or does Jed go bargain shopping with guys like Triantos, Alcantara and maybe Long and put a few others in and shoot for Wacha or Mahle? I have said from the start that if Jed does make a substantial deal it is going to give up a lot more than people hope they have to give. But if he doesn’t the Cubs have no chance. They will probably get a pen arm or two with lesser prospects. Guys further down in the system either because of age and/or potential. But how do they address a playoff starting pitcher?
Personally I would bite the bullet now and get Detmers. Then sign a FA pitcher next offseason and maybe they don’t have to do this again next TDL.

If we end up with another 4.00 ERA guy I'll be annoyed.

It might be better than dropping a pre-filled body bag on the mound like they did last year.

The return feels light. Shame on teams like the Brewers and Rays for not ponying up more.

And Cubs, right?
