So he threw a super-duper Maddux?

It may have been a complete game 1-0 win vs. the then Expos (05-27-1977), can't find the PC, Krukow also scored the winning run.

It’s had a positive effect on viewership and attendance from everything I’ve read.  Anecdotally I’ve been watching a lot more games the last few years in large because of the faster pace of games, and to some extent the cubs have been watchable since 2023 as well more so than 21-22.

It took me forever to get used to the faster rhythm.  Like most people with short attention spans due to smartphones, I got used to a certain between pitch rhythm and flow so I kept missing pitches because they were coming too quickly.  But once I adapted its an overall better viewing experience.

Has anyone tried to go back and watch a full game pre-pitch clock?  It's jarring watching some of those 2016 playoff games again with all the step offs, look overs, and just overall slower pace between pitches.

Just found out that the only hit Ryne Sandberg registered as a non-Cub in his ML career was off Mike Krukow.

More the latter.  Someone did a breakdown elsewhere, but Horton's current lack of Ks can be attributed to his fastball.  Hitters in the majors seem to be doing a good job of picking up on it and making contact (even if it's foul balls), so it's not really a strikeout pitch despite its velocity as things currently stand.  As a result, he has to play off his fastball with his change (which is devastating) and his breaking pitches (which are still a bit of a work in progress), and if his fastball isn't working super great, everything else falls apart.

I'd be really, really, really curious to see what the PitchF/X has to say about it, but my hunch is he has a bit of Kyle Farnsworth in him, where his fastball does not generate a whole lot of movement and he has to rely on location with it to avoid getting walloped in the zone.

Solid post....his fastball tracks straight as an arrow BUT I don't wanna criticize the kid, cuz he's been absolutely great. But I think they can work with him to develop a cutter or even a sinker that will produce not only ground balls but swings and misses. Love the kid though.

AQI is once again for horsefeathers today.  Anyone running the bases would likely have a healthier outcome if they smoked a pack of Marlboro reds.

Ahhhh the memories of 8th grade……..

I was at a rooftop for this game and if you were to tell me the only reason we have the pitch clock is because of the Rooftop Lobby I’d believe you. All you can eat and drink and we were basically cut off 90 minutes in.

Unrelated random thought I had when the ASG stuff started to leak, how much you think they'll be able to get for the rooftops during home run derby?

Just the chance to catch a "Glenallen Hill" would be cool.

Boog and JD sound very bored despite it being a 1 run game in the 9th

Boog only really gets excited when he's flirting with T-Mac.

Brewers up 6-2 already

It’s the Nats so yeah, I would not be surprised if they flick their pinky and sweep.

Maybe. I know they lost 2 to miami but they can’t keep winning at a 115 win pace can they

One thing that’s stuck out the most is the magnitude of every pitch, inning and run scored. Before the rule changes it’d be 2-0 Cubs in the first inning, I’d think to myself, that’s cool and check back in an hour 1/2 during the 5th inning. Now with the pitch clock all the action is condensed and if I look away for a minute I’ve missed 2 at bats and it’s a 3-2 count.. Before, I’d look away and the only thing I missed was a couple pickoff attempts and a mound visit. It’s definitely added to the intensity and has had a semi football effect for me.

My ADHD brain appreciates it.

I watched Sandberg’s last home game the other day. The time between pitches really stood out. Also I had forgotten exactly how much Harry never shut the horsefeathers up.

Then I watched the 9th inning of the 2016 NLDS game 4. The top of that inning was almost as long as yesterday’s game. Not only were the pitches spread so far out, but Bochy used 5 pitchers for 7 batters.

Game 4 against the Giants was the greatest comeback game ever to watch. We were nearing the end of a long remodel in my house, so basically trapped in the smallest room in the house watching the game. No clock in the room and a small couch and a tv. Shocked when the game ended and it was after midnight. But worth it. Maddon outmaneuvered Boche big time in that one. And that game was the very reason the Cubs had to get Chapman instead of letting him go to the Giants. If he is a Giant, we don’t win that one. And who knows what happens facing Cueto in game 5.

Was in 2016 or 2017 when Willson Contreras would go have a mound visit every other pitch?
