Does the looming lockout make a player like Holmes more likely, less likely, or no change in terms of trying to get an extension done before the current CBA expires? If we're penciling in Cabrera, Steele, Brown, and I guess Garrett into the rotation next year, we have roughly $100m to spend. Spotrac has Holmes' estimated market value at $23m, so let's just use that. Would leave around $75mish to address the corner OF spots and upgrade over Garrett if we'd prefer him to be a depth 6 man type until proven he can be healthy.

I absolutely trust Shota more than Cabrera. I think late last season with him pitching hurt left a bad taste in everyone's mouths. Shota has been much better than Cabrera overall this season + he's been pitching extremely well lately - Since June 1st, 10 starts 2.81 ERA 3.47 xERA. And one would expect the summer months to be his worst being a fly ball pitcher. He's a fine #4 starter for us in the playoffs, especially if you can line him up at Wrigley in Oct with maybe an assist from cool weather/wind blowing in. With the plethora of SP we have now, maybe they can get him a few extra days rest here and there to ensure he doesn't run out of gas.

This. It's a long shot, but if you want to run down the Brewers this is how you do it. Plus, being in the WC series is much different than getting a bye. You legit need to have 4 playoff worthy SP with how quick the turnaround time is between the WC series and the division series e.g. Boyd pitching on short rest game one of the division series last season and not making it out of the 1st inning against the Brewers.

He's a rental that is currently on the 60 day IL who likely doesn't have time to get stretched out before the end of the season. That's why he was so cheap.
