Didn't know where else to put it (or if it's been posted already)...

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports that the Phillies plan to offer at least $120 million to keep impending free agent Cole Hamels.

This would equal Cliff Lee's five-year, $120 million contract with the club. The Phillies reportedly don't mind giving Hamels the yearly salary he covets, but the number of years is believed to be the major sticking point. With that in mind, two management people on other teams told Heyman that they believe the Phillies will have to go closer to Johan Santana's six-year, $137.5-million deal -- or even more -- to convince Hamels from testing free agency. And they're probably right. While the Phillies plan to make a "substantial offer" to Hamels before the trade deadline, Heyman hears that "some people within the organization" aren't overly optimistic they'll be able to get it done.

Castellanos, Turner, Smyly is simply not happening.

Castellanos is raking, Smyly is off to a great pro start, and Turner is the most talented arm they have.

I don't even think we could get Castellanos and Crosby at this point.

Garza is worth one of Castellanos or Turner as the key piece in a trade with Detroit, they get him for a year 1/2 and worst case they get a draft pick if he leaves after next season. He's worth getting one of those guys, if Detriot isn't willing to give one of those two up he isn't getting traded there.

Then you don't trade him. I'm not saying we should go all Chuck LaMar with Garza, but when the worst case scenario is that we wind up with Matt Garza on our team, we don't have a lot to lose.

I can't wait til we go back to being buyers, if only because it's a lot easier not to go crazy when everyone is overvaluing your own prospects instead of everyone else's.

Extending Garza, keeping Soriano, re-signing Dempster during the offseason, hope that 1-2 prospects make a decent showing next year, make a decent trade or two, spend some money on a FA or 2, and we could be competing in 2013 while we rebuild for the future.

i really doubt the rangers would give up olt for a flyball pitcher, but it would be exciting.

I doubt they care if a guy throws flyballs vs. groundballs as long he's an actual good pitcher. They don't even have a GB pitcher in their rotation, and they just paid a lot for 2 of them. Garza is likely the best pitcher they could trade for this year to make a run at the WS. And Olt is a player that is blocked by Beltre.

Would you guys do Garza straight-up for Olt?

No, they'd have to give a pitcher of some value too. Garza is a known quantity and anything they are trading for has some level of uncertainty.

Jason Parks did a little write-up on Olt when he saw him at the Futures Game:

3B Mike Olt: Major league body; good athlete; very strong; swing has length, but bat speed is well above average; power display in batting practice forced observers to have audible reactions; raw power is 7; mature approach; soft and spinning stuff can get him out on the front foot; leveraged swing can open up hole on inner half; hit tool is average; consistent contact could be issue; glove is solid; actions are good; arm is very strong; footwork can get a little clumsy; defensive profile is really good at present with potential to be great; speed is below average, but plays with purpose and doesn’t clog; bat will play at any position; could be ~.270 hitter with on-base ability, 25+ home run pop; above average defense at third; skill set to handle a corner outfield spot/first base; has first-division projection; major league regular floor.

and Castellanos:

3B Nick Castellanos: Very impressive in cage; drew the attention and subsequent praise from George Brett; very tall and lanky, but strong with plenty of room to fill out frame; baseball rat; no batting gloves; has swagger; gamer with middle-of-the-order potential; swing is extremely loose and easy; very natural; swing doesn’t have a lot of loft, but the power is present; lots of torque; I really love the swing; knack for barrel-to-ball ability; uses all fields; just a pure hitter; power will arrive in profile eventually; hit tool is easy plus and possible plus-plus; power could reach those levels at maturity; approach will need work; very aggressive; not the biggest fan of defensive profile at 3B; arm is strong; actions are fringy; footwork a bit awkward; skills will play in RF; bat will play anywhere; impact offensive talent at highest level; first-division potential.

Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com reports that the Royals have inquired on pitchers they could acquire now and control through through next season, including Cubs' right-hander Matt Garza.

The Royals are determined to add a high-quality starting pitcher to help them contend in 2013 and Garza would certainly fit the bill. While the 28-year-old right-hander has a 4.02 ERA this season, he is battle-tested from pitching in the American League East. He could be the most expensive pitcher on the trade market, since he remains under team control through 2013.

I'd have to think long and hard about it. Olt is probably my biggest prospect baseball crush right now so I'm biased, but Garza should be able to warrant another player in a Garza/Olt deal. Maybe not a Top 10 guy, but definitely someone for their 25, and preferably a pitcher. Maybe they could toss in a power arm like Will Lamb or take the risky flier on Barret Loux? Perhaps Roman Mendez?

Not remotely. Olt and another of their Top 10 pitchers(Martin/Perez/Buckel/Ramirez), now we're about in range.

In the neverending "This new CBA sucks" story, it's now confirmed that when a team loses a player the tender the required offer to, they do NOT receive the 1st round pick that the acquiring team gives up. Instead, that pick just gets forfeited(top 10 protected). The draft just condenses. The team that lost the player just gets the supplemental pick. I'm putting this here, because it could definitely affect offers for Garza.

Does that forfeited pick go into the "teams that didn't exceed their pool" draft?

I talked to Dayton Moore today for ten minutes. Right before he went to DFA sanchez. I asked him about garza, told him they should send us Wil myers for him. He laughed, you're all welcome.

Turner is getting absolutely corn holed right now by the Angels.

He may not make it out of the 2nd. He's given up 3 HRs already (Pujols, Trout, Trumbo).

After Turner's rough year, how do people feel about him? There has been talk about a loss of velocity and he has sketchy numbers between both the minors and majors so far.
