I'd love Eovaldi, but I just have a hard time seeing the Dodgers giving up a guy who's already in their ML rotation.

The Braves are the most intriguing trade candidate to me, given how awful Jair Jurrjens is and how many young, not-quite-ready-for-the-show SPs they have waiting in the wings. Although Teheran's stock has fallen somewhat, from what I understood scouts still see him as a #2-type starter. Goldstein said on a recent prospect that he'd probably rank Teheran between 11-20 as opposed to top 5 or 10 overall (or wherever he was ranked this time last year).

Epstein is a really good talent evaluator, but he is not some kind of magical jedi knight talks other teams into giving up assets they don't want to give up.

Epstein's track record gives me faith that whatever prospects he picks out have a better chance than normal of succeeding.

The Marshall/Torreyes trade makes me wonder about the jedi mind tricks thing.....

In seriousness, if there's a game of chicken going on over Zach Lee, I feel better about Colletti flinching before Theo. That's my main point. Theo is patient enough to wait out Colletti and see if he gets nervous as the deadline approaches.

I know you were kidding, but you don't consider that trade a big win?

Also, AFAIK, Torreyes had some really bad luck early in the year and has picked things up considerably lately.

I do consider it a big win, the statement was meant to say that maybe Theo does have some jedi mind tricks up his sleeve because he got that good a return for (admittedly very good) Sean Marshall.

And Torreyes is the reason I like it so much. I'm not really fazed by his poor start to the year since it appears a ton of bad luck was involved.

I would much prefer Eovaldi or Rubby to Lee at this point.

I'm not questioning you at all since you'd know better than me, but why? All I've seen to this point is that Lee is clearly their best pitching prospect.

Lee has struggled a bit - especially since being promoted to AA - and his velocity has fluctuated a bit.

I'm not too fazed by it and would rather have Lee than Eovaldi. When you consider acquiring a prospect, you need to consider his big league contributions and I think Lee is more likely to have a better career than Eovaldi.

Ah. Gotcha. My bad.

My reasoning is Eovaldi has looked like he'll be successful at the major league level. Needs to miss a few more bats, but he's 22 and in my opinion, probably pitches as well ss Dempster the rest of the way, if given the chance. He's going to be moved to the pen, unless they lose 2 starters between now and the end of the year. I like him a ton, think he's a guy that could move directly into our rotation and grow with us. Rubby? Simply put, his stuff pre-TJS was electric. No. 1, type ability. He's got the speed back, about to go on a minor league assignment and will probably be in the pen once rosters expand. We'd have to protect him, ease him back next season and all, but if he makes it 100% back, we've got an ace. As for Lee, I like him. But while it was the California League, they should have kept him there, instead of moving him to AA. His peripherals were solid, but it wasn't necessary to move him up, especially with conflicting reports on how his stuff has looked this year. Is he 88-92, or is he 92-94? Control has been solid at least. But in AA, he's now been shelled 3 times in 5 outings and a 4th outing considered so-so, at best. Our own Tennessee squad lit him up last night, bigtime. Like I said, I like him, just think he's too hyped for what he's shown.

Worth noting that the Dodgers are (probably) rushing Lee pretty hard. Kid's still just 20 and should still be in A+, if not A. He basically starting sucking the minute he was promoted to AA a few weeks ago. Even in A and A+, his K rates and K:B ratios were good, but not incredible, and he still managed to give up 60 hits in 55 innings in A+.

Long story short, difficult to get a 'true' read on how good of a prospect Lee is considering his youth and lack of hasty promotion history.

Exactly.

Of course, teams have to do silly things with pitchers when they have high-A affiliates in the Cal League. Even still, he was doing well with Rancho Cucamonga.

Note I didn't say anything about Rubby de la Rosa: I think he'll end up better than Lee but I also don't think the Cubs will get any of those 3 for Dempster, last of all de la Rosa.

Yeah, unfortunately, I agree with Raisin in thinking none seem very likely. The reason I went there was Marlin mentioning different one for one options (names speculated by me, because no one else made sense)the Dodgers had offered, that he thought were fair, but evidently the Cubs wanted more.

I think I'd order my preference as Rubby, then Eovaldi and then Lee. But it's very close between the last two and I'd be inclined to trust the Cubs to make the right decision there.

Thought this might be pertinent...

Rangers manager Ron Washington said shortstop prospect Jurickson Profar is Texas' only untouchable prospect as the club looks for veteran upgrades via trade.

To be fair, what Ron Washington says doesn't really matter.

JIM BOWDEN ‏@JimBowdenESPNxm

Cubs not resting on their laurels continue trade discussions with Dodgers on deal that would send Matt Garza for package including Zach Lee

Better include a lot more than just Lee.
