I'd actually be ok with giving him the qualifier each offseason until the point in time that he's willing to accept a 3/27ish deal or somebody gives him a multi-year deal and we get a comp pick. Obviously you keep trying to trade him, but unless this injury goes away and there are no lingering issues, I'll bet we don't ever get an offer worth trading him for.

yeah good luck with that.

Our long-term prognosis includes two guys who are out with elbow injuries and a hole that we don't know how we intend to fill. That's cause for a bit of despair.

Well, if you buy into the idea that there are only two types of pitchers - those who have had TJS and those who are going to have it - then you would feel pretty good that Vizcaino has it behind him already. And if you believe we should tank until 2015 like some do, then it's fine that Garza may eventually need TJS since he'll have 2.5 years to have the surgery and recover from it before we try to compete again.

In seriousness, though, I'm not despairing over Garza's injury yet. I'm concerned, but I at least have confidence that this front office won't be reckless with him. And with the success rate of TJS, I'm not all that concerned about Vizcaino.

So build a staff around those who had TJS and future pitchers that will? Depressing.

Dale Sveum on @WGNRadio Cubs Corner today: I'd be surprised if Garza pitches again this season. bit.ly/nEEuDg

This sucks on a number of levels.

Excellent. Now he'll be even cheaper.

In arbiteation, I agree. But I seriously doubt either side even wants to talk extension right now. We'd want a huge discount and I'd certainly think he'd rather hit the market after a solid season, than agree on a much lesser deal right now.

At least he's a guy we can be pretty sure to get a pick for if we offer a qualifier after a strong season. That's if we don't trade him at the deadline. I wish they would have traded him during this past offseason his value will likely never be higher than it was then.

Yep. They took a risk and they lost. I don't blame them for asking for the moon last offseason though.

Am I alone in the shut him down and see him in the spring camp? If that's going to have teams interested in trading for him try to lowball us, [expletive] em. It also gives us the chance to get an extended look at Raley, Rusin, and Struck to help decide which, if any get rostered.

I'm still all for an extension, and I'd anyone still wants to bowl us over with an offer, I'm all for that as well. There's no reason that we should be going in to 2013 in a "lost/tanked season" frame of mind.

What? No. That's what it sounds like nearly everyone is thinking. What a weird rhetorical question.

It's gonna be sweet when we have Garza just rehab all winter then when ST comes he throws like 2 innings then has to have a surgery Edited by Cubswin11

And now they are in cleanup duty. Hopefully (our best bet) is for him to have an amazing first half, is the far and away best pitcher available at the deadline, and we can get a very nice package for him.

He's not going to lower his demands for a contract, what happened is nothing but negative for the Cubs, there is no positive spin here.

This was in a little news capsule on his page on mlb.com

He has not picked up a baseball, or at least was not supposed to pick up one since he was put on the DL Aug. 7, retroactive to July 28. The move doesn't change the pace of Garza's rehab. He was scheduled for another X-ray in early September.

If the X-ray doesn't show improvement and surgery is an option to fix him hopefully they go ahead and get it done by end of Sept/early Oct so he can be ready to pitch at some next season. Instead of taking the wait and see approach and then ST comes and he still hasn't healed and then opts for the surgery.*

*That's assuming surgery is even an option to fix whatever is wrong with him. Maybe all he can do is rehab and rest.

He's not going to lower his demands for a contract

What exactly is this based on?

I don't think there's really a reason for him to at this point. Unless he thinks this is a long-term issue that threatens his career and ability to get a long-term deal.

Sure, it's speculation about whether or not he'd lower his contract demands, but it doesn't seem likely. And if he did, he'd also likely be insistent on a NTC(which was the rumor back during past negotiations) and our guys don't appear willing to give them out. In my mind, as a guy who loves our FO, this was the first true mistake from them. They gambled and lost here, assuming they wanted to trade him, which I definitely think was the case. Now our best tradable asset is worth much less than he was at one point.
