The Brewers are believed to be willing to offer Zack Greinke an extension worth close to $100MM over five years, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports. However, people close to the team aren’t particularly hopeful that the right-hander will bypass free agency with just half a season remaining on his contract.

I sure hope he does. And I sure hope Amaro resigns Hamels. Taking Hamels and Greinke off the market before the deadline would all but guarantee a HUGE return for Garza and Dempster

it would also take the best 2 pitchers off the market for an offseason where the cubs will have a ridiculous amount of money to spend. not to mention that the other guys like anibal sanchez could be harder and more expensive to get with hamels/greinke off the market.

Yea. Why not just hope for those guys not to re-sign but not to be traded?

And what did Epstein really do for The Red Sox? He took a very strong foundation and built around it. How did he do it? Player development, big trades, and spending money. Amaro's main difference is that he hasn't had a Pedroia, Papelbon, or Ellsbury develop as of yet. I guess he did a lot more "moneyballing" to earn his first ring, but for the second it was more about money spending.

This is dumb, even for you. And this defense of Amaro is weird and dumb.

I don't think SCS is defending Amaro, just pointing out that there are similarities with the Phillies and what is happened with the Red Sox under Theo. Both GMs came into a good situation, made the teams better, had very high payrolls, and now are suffering with expensive players that are aging and getting injured.

That's a very, very faulty comparison.

Yea, no. And he is defending Amaro. Read the last two pages.

Touché. But are we really anticipating going after either of them with this plan the FO has set in motion?

I hope they do go after Greinke.

Posted (edited)
they're going to basically have to spend money on something pretty soon, unless our payroll is going to be like 60 million every year. the organization is short on pitching assets, and this is the perfect offseason to add them without giving up anything other than money. i don't know if we'll get greinke or hamels, but i'd be pretty disappointed (and surprised) if they don't go relatively hard after starting pitching this offseason. I hope they do too, I just question whether or not they will.

Maybe I'm being overly optimistic but I'm hoping Greinke signs for less money/years because some teams will worry about his anxiety issues.

I've always been under the assumption that they are going after near MLB ready young arms using Garza and Dempster as the bait so that they don't need to rely on free agency to do so, especially since they have the 2014 contingency plan (or whatever you want to call it that we keep hearing about).

even if you add good pitching prospects with dempster/garza trades and next year's inevitable top 5 pick, i still feel like they're going to need add pitching through free agency if we're going to be at all relevant in the next couple years. i know they're trying to manage expectations and stuff by making it sound like they won't spend, but i don't buy it. i think they'll be realtively aggressive this offseason, especially if garza is traded.

I hope that's 100% accurate. Even if they don't land Greinke or Hamels there are guys like Edwin Jackson, Brandon McCarthy, etc. who could be cheap(er), productive alternatives that could help round out the rotation at a fraction of the cost. And even then they could do some dumpster diving and grab guys like Liriano or Ervin Santana (if he's bought out)

I'm not so much defending him as I an explaining that he'd done what big league GMs do.I just don't know what he's really done that other big market GMs havnt done. Even in the case of Rollins, while he's been meh at best since 2008, the 3/33 contract was a great value for what he's capable of. Other than that, the main issue during his reign has been the failure to produce from the farm system. As for contracts, Crawford, Lackey, and Daisuke were each as bad or worse than anything Amaro's done.

The problem is, if we trade Garza, and Hamels and Greinke are both extended, next thing you know McCarthy, Sanchez, Peavy, and Marcum become a lot more expensive. I can't see our guys getting in too much of a bidding war for any of them and the best option at that point could be to hope Dempster, who will be 36 is willing to give us a generous home town discount on a 2 year deal 5 months after we trade him.

Ryan Howard's been worth $20 million or more twice in his career. The Phillies will have paid Ryan Howard at least $20 million dollars a year for 6 years when all is said and done.

And I think it's a pretty safe bet he won't be posting any more 20M dollar seasons from here on out, either.

I was stunned by that deal the day it was announced and I still am.

I doubt that Greinke wants to come to us. He left KC because he wanted no part of being in a rebuilding process and they had better prospects on the way than we do right now.

Yeah, but they had/have nowhere near the capability to spend the cash that the Cubs do and turn things around pretty quickly.

@Rotoworld_BB: Hammel leaves game with right knee injury http://t.co/HLyfPXmS

I'd love to get the O's in on either Dempster or Garza. For lack of a better term, they need this. It's not often when they're in the thick of things in the division they are in, and they should be doing everything they can to make the most out of it. I'm not saying we get Bundy or Machado, but I expect them to be very aggressive in the next few weeks.

Posted
The O's aren't trading Bundy or Machado and they have very little else worth talking about. They [expletive] up all their pitchers. I'm not interested in Matusz or Arrieta.

Yeah, Baltimore means nothing for the Cubs.

Baltimore is all smoke and mirrors this year anyways. They are 45-40 despite a -37 run differential. Sure, better pitching might help them, but is their FO willing to go all in this year?

But that's more than they usually have going for them, and I can't see it being much different in the near future. In addition to their own hot start, they've benefited from the struggles of Boston and Tampa, which may or may not continue. When you're a perennial cellar dweller, in the toughest division in baseball it's hard to blame them for going all in.

Bundy and Machado should be untouchable, and that about it as far as their prospects go. Even if they don't have enough for Garza without one of those two, I'd be interested in working with them on a deal with 1-3 of Dempster, Siriano, and Marmol. As I've said before, I'd be very interested in any of Matusz, Britton, or Hunter. For Dempster, I'd want more of a young prospect package, but for Soriano and/or Marmol I'd take 1-3 of those guys depending if we were sending Sori and or or Marmol and how much cash. I should clarify that Matusz or Britton more so, with Hunter as a 2nd piece.
