  1. Seems like Angelos and his Davis man-crush probably meddled a bit. By all appearances, the Orioles were essentially bidding against themselves. Also, the O's will be paying Davis through 2037, apparently.
  2. That's how it is pretty much everywhere. I don't get how people can be that way, but it is true of most places. Living in the southwest, I have found that to be less the case here than in the Midwest, where people tend to "put down roots" fairly early in life.
  3. Chicago certainly has its share of serious issues, there's absolutely no denying that. But while its lows are low, its highs are really high. St. Louis, on the other hand, registers on a spectrum from "meh, maybe okay" to "festering sharthole". There simply aren't enough positives to make the city redeemable. It's not mentioned in the same breath as places like Detroit without just cause.
  4. If our frontcourt wasn't dead, we might have won some games this year. Agreed ... I actually think we'd be pretty damn good healthy! Yeah, I thnk we'd have been a dangerous team for sure. Hill/Nunn are quite good. But with our best post players done for the year, it's going to be a tough slog.

  6. Can you name 5 players from any non-Cub (or Cub between 2009-2014) team? I would think just about anyone here could, if they pay any attention at all. XZero77, meet Sammy Sofa I was going to add "except mojo", but I figure he could at least name five Cardinals. Maybe I'm wrong.

  8. Yeah, it's a decent contract. The Cards rotation is a big bag of injury risk, so signing a pitcher who is a good bet to give them ~200 IP was sort of a necessary move. It isn't sexy, and Leake doesn't really have any ceiling left, but it's stability.
  9. Before this, I would have ruled out the Cardinals trading for Votto because they didn't have enough to acquire him without hurting the major league roster. But now, I'm not so sure. But I don't see Mozeliak going that route. As great as Votto is, that decline can come quickly, and he is 32. As for Frazier, I don't think he is great, but two years of him has to be worth more that what the Reds got. Going from GABP to the Cell is almost a later move, so maintaining his numbers should be expected.
  10. I don't think it'll be Davis, the cost is high, and his performance has been volatile. I think it'll be Alex Gordon. He has Cardinal written all over him. As for power, I think they're banking on a healthy Adams and Holliday, as well as a potential rebound from Gyorko. Plus Carpenter ad a breakout power season last year. I think Alex Gordon and a farewell season from Mark Buehrle would be a likely scenario.
  11. I have to think that a lot of this is just posturing on Mozeliak's part. There's no doubt that the phone started ringing off of the hook after they lost out on Price, and even more after Heyward. They've talked about their new resources, and agents are no doubt eager to get in on it now, hoping the Cards will act out of desperation. I have a hard time imagining that they won't sign at least one of the remaining upper tier FAs. If they don't, that's fine by me; that would be a huge gamble.
  12. after the last trade that stewart made, i have no doubt that his phone has been ringing red hot from teams asking what it would take to pry away bradley. I remember back in high school there was a vending machine in the cafeteria that one day, inexplicably, started dispensing five or six sodas at a time instead of one. Word got out, and there was a rush on the thing until it was empty. That's probably something like what is going on with Stewart right now.
  13. Definitely Atlanta, though the Phillies got quite a nice haul for Giles. And unlike Philly, Atlanta didn't wait 2-3 years too long to start.
  14. He had flashes of brilliance. Big arm who battled injuries and inconsistency, iirc. Yeah, but we've got a long way to go to catch the early 2000s Astros in terms of crackerization.
  15. That was my thought, though he's not making much anyway. I don't think he's long for the Cubs.
  16. Somewhere, Kaplan is frantically searching for a new pair of pants.
  17. I've never completely lost confidence that Starlin would become the player we all hoped he would become. I came close in the first half last year, but I was feeling really optimistic towards the end. This is kind of depressing, even if my rational mind believes it to be for the best.
  18. Waiting for word on the return. Kinda sad to see Starlin go, though.
  19. Still not worth it. Unless someone signs Heyward for 14M more per year than the Cubs should pay (thinking 38-40Mil aav), then I'd still take 1 Heyward over Zobrist and whoever else they get. I am stupid, but isn't there a big difference in total commitment? Meaning they might not be willing to shell out a financial commitment of $250 million and are comfortable with smaller deals that help now but don't effect the long-term window when trying to sign our own in a few years. Well, the expectation seems to be that the payroll will really jump when the Cubs get their TV deal in 4 years or so. If that comes to pass, having the resources to re-sign some of our own players won't be as much of a concern.
  20. If we give Zobrist 14MM per over four years and then cry poor on Heyward, I am going to be something a lot less than thrilled. That is unless Heyward signs for something truly outrageous.
  21. i love javy and even i think this is ridiculous They can add other minor pieces as well. Baez would have to be the minor piece if you want Archer.
  22. He's been hurt for most of the last two years. Elbow/TJS. His stuff has all been a bit reduced, but time will tell; he'd be a gamble, imo. I'd rather have Odorizzi at this point, but I'd add a fair bit to have Moore added to a potential deal.
  23. Yeah, it was a pretty memorable brawl in which Cueto was kicking people, and iirc, Molina was on the receiving end. That might make for an awkward battery.
  24. I'd have been fine with Shark at that price, but I'm just as fine with Lackey. In fact, barring Price/Grienke, a lesser commitment like Lackey was probably preferable. I wouldn't mind seeing a trade for another SP, though. And with each of the SP that goes off of the board, the Cardinals' options dwindle. I think SF will retain Leake, and Iwakuma will return to Seattle. I wouldn't be shocked if STL ends up with Buerhle on a one year deal. Of course, that leaves them with more money to throw at Heyward.
