  1. I wonder what the deal looked like and if it can be revisited. He acted like it could be revisited evidently. Just seemed confused by the Braves situation as to why they'd pull him back away quickly like that. My guess would be that they heard from another team. If earlier reports that twenty teams contacted the Braves regarding Miller are true, I suspect that there is quite a bit of multi-party discussion going on. I could see the Miller situation dragging on for a while.
  2. I'm not surprised they were in it, but from what I've gathered, I think they were probably a fairly distant second, at least money-wise. They have their new TV deal (which should cost them their comp balance picks, but that's another issue), so future payroll should be higher than we're used to seeing them dish out. And I can't imagine that Heyward was plan B, given their needs. I think they were going to try and sign both, if the prices were amenable. If they don't retain Heyward and/or add another significant bat, their offense is going to be awfully underwhelming.
  3. He can want whatever he desires. He's not getting Price money. Yeah, the market will dictate what he gets, and after last season, he'll do well to get half of Price money.
  4. It's cool that Joe won, but of all the awards, MOTY probably means the least, imo. It's almost always narrative-driven, and a result of how the team plays. Partially for those reasons, it's amusing how butthurt many Cards fans are that Matheny didn't win. Their knickers are in a serious twist.
  5. 1. Zack Greinke - Dodgers 2. David Price - Cubs 3. Jason Heyward - Cardinals 4. Chris Davis - Mariners 5. Justin Upton - Yankees 6. Johnny Cueto - Blue Jays 7. Yoenis Cespedes - White Sox 8. Alex Gordon - Royals 9. Jordan Zimmermann - Giants 10. Jeff Samardzija - Orioles 11. Mike Leake - Giants 12. Denard Span - Indians 13. Kenta Maeda - Mariners 14. Wei-Yin Chen - Diamondbacks 15. Dexter Fowler - Nationals 16. Daniel Murphy - Angels 17. Scott Kazmir - Astros 18. Ian Kennedy - Cardinals 19. Yovanni Gallardo - Rangers 20. Ben Zobrist - Cardinals
  6. He looks like an extra from the set of Deliverance, or one of Patrick Swayze's relatives in Next of Kin. If the universe made any sense, he'd have played his entire career in a Cardinal uniform.
  7. Link I wouldn't object, depending on the cost.
  8. What if we call them the Gerrit Coles or Colby Rasmuses of the world, or the Adam Wainwrights or Carlos Quentins. Exactly. The Rob Zastryznys aren't always Rob Zastryznys. Now the miss rate is pretty high and we absolutely shouldn't let fear of losing picks keep us from pursuing good-great players, but these picks aren't throwaways, either. They have value. There's a lot of grey area between giving up a first rounder for a good-great player and a "decent" player.
  9. I don't really care at all. For a guy like Price, Greinke, Heyward, etc type FA it shouldn't even be in question. A guy like Estrada, Lackey, Kennedy, etc I think it absolutely should have some weight in the decision of signing a guy on that level. Yeah, like you say, it shouldn't even be a consideration when pursuing top-tier guys, especially since we wouldn't be picking anywhere near the top this year. But for lower tier guys, it should creep into the picture as a factor. It would barely even cross my mind that we gave up our first rounder in the even a Price/Heyward were signed, but for a guy like Lackey or Span, it would seem like a little bit of a sacrifice. That's not to say I wouldn't still do it, but it should become at least a point of consideration as the quality of the signee decreases. Saying "I don't give a [expletive] about losing picks for signing guys" as a blanket statement seems kind of dumb.
  10. And a bullpen addition or two. I think of the potential big money signings being attached to the Cubs, Price is by far the most likely to happen. The writing has been on the wall with regards to the Cubs pursuing Price for a couple of years now, and Maddon coming on board has only made it more likely. While adding another big money/years pitcher is a scary proposition, I won't be particularly perturbed if/when it happens. It feels even more pre-ordained than Lester did.
  11. Yeah, that was incredible.
  12. Aramis' grand slam in game 4 of the 2003 NLCS gets some consideration from me, because it was when I was sure we were going to the world series (ugh). I want to say Wood's game 7 homer, but the stink of death was on the series at that point, and I didn't enjoy it as much as I might have.
  13. That seems pretty far down the list of outrageous things that Phil Rogers has said. The Cubs have shown they're pretty confident in their player development system. I'd have to imagine they would like Fowler back on the QO, but may prefer not to go multiple years, in part due to Almora. If not Fowler I'm sure they'll have some acceptable vet and not be counting on Almora for 2016. I can't imagine that the FO is counting on Almora for anything. The way he finished 2015 was certainly encouraging, but it was just a couple months on the back of a couple mediocre years. None of the CF talent should be considered MLB ready, or nearly so.
  14. Heyward is clearly an excellent player. That said, though I'm all for the Cubs throwing some money around, I don't think he's a player they need to drop $200MM on. I'd rather see that money spent on pitching, if it's going to be spent. And though he's a capable center fielder now, I question how capable he will remain, even in the near-mid term. Frankly, I'll be very surprised if the Cubs pursue him beyond the cursory stage.
  15. Soak it in Mets and Mets fans, it's the last time you'll see a world series in Citi for a while.
  16. This is perhaps the best "teams can win in spite of their manager, but not because of them" evidence ever.
  17. First game I've watched since we got eliminated. Glad Mets fans get to see this happen in Citi Field.
  18. That I think he's really, really overrated because of how he looks. Who the [expletive] thinks soler is good, god we're three days into the offseason and you're already an insufferable idiot again i consider myself firmly in the soler apologist camp. if he has another season like the last, then i'll bail publicly. but you better believe that i'll be the insufferable one when he puts together a beast of a season in miami or wherever Yeah, he had a mediocre year for sure, but I wouldn't feel good at all if he were traded this offseason. Like you, I want to see Soler get one more season before I give up on him.
  19. Christ. That really was Epstein-Hoyer's worst move to this point. Hasn't been a crippling move, but it's still hurting the team. I worked with a GF and now wife of one of the Nationals and nobody on their team could believe the Cubs spent that much money on him. Why? Yeah, given his performance in the years preceding, it was pretty fair market value, but not really over.
  20. I thought it was this http://i531.photobucket.com/albums/dd358/Cloudstrife219/mom__s_old_fashioned_robot_oil_by_javoec_zpsjtuwm3ei.png
  21. He looked like a different man at the plate in the postseason, not just in terms of results, but approach. He looked much the same way in spring training, but for whatever reason seemed to abandon that disciplined approach for pretty much the entire regular season. I'm still quite confident that he'll be a force in the mid-long term.
  22. I know many would like it, but Hammel probably isn't going anywhere. Right? Probably not, I don't know what kind of trade value he has at this point. If there were some way to manage his workload, he could be an asset, because first half Hammel each of the last two years has been pretty damned good. But we can't go into next October with a rotation of Arrieta, Lester and two bullpen days.
  23. And he's a Mets guy. I've never cared for broadcasters with biases calling national games that involve their teams (the worst being Buck/McCarver doing Cardinals games). When Len does it, it seems awkward. I think they should have contingencies for situations like these.
