Angels are interested in Greinke, if he becomes available. Add another potential team to the Garza/Dempster list. I think it's getting to the point, with how many teams are interested in pitching, that we almost have to trade Garza with a pitcher like him in high demand and a team willing to/having to pay a premium to acquire him to so many teams in on the bidding.

You don't know that teams are willing to pay a premium.

davell, I don't like to make guarantees, but I guarantee we will not be trading 8 guys off our major league roster in the next 3 weeks.

Dempster: Almost definite

Garza: I'll say 65/35

Soriano: If we're really willing to eat 95% of his salary and take what we can get in return.

Marmol: For the right offer. Teams look for back end relievers at this time, and Marmol has a year left of team control

LaHair: for the right offer. No reason to rush him off though

Soto: For the right offer

Johnson: PTBNL or throw in

Camp: PTBNL or throw in

Baker: PTBNL or throw in

If not in the next 3 weeks, it's not out of the question for all of the above to be gone by Septembet 1st, or whever the waiver trade deadline is this year.

Yeah, you're probably right to make it. The returns on Garza and Dempster could affect our immediate team, but I doubt we receive anything from the other guys that will. Dempster, Garza, Russell, and DeJesus would have to be dealt by July 31st. My guess is Soto, Maholm, Camp, and especially Marmol, could all be August deals, if dealt.

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports that the Dodgers have spoken with the Cubs about possible trades for Ryan Dempster and Matt Garza.

The Dodgers have been linked to Dempster in numerous reports already and are considered a favorite to land him, but it turns out they have also discussed the possibility of acquiring Garza. Of course, Garza will cost more in the way of prospects, as he remains under team control through 2013 while Dempster will be a free agent this offseason.

I don't care how much of a homer he is; the man gets a lifetime pass a billion times over for FJM.com and P&R and for being Mose.

He's not a homer. He's an incredibly whiny, woe is me, only my team, baby.

so Sulley, then

Maholm has a 6 mil team option for 2013, and for a productive 4-5 starter, without a definite replacement there's no reason to move him unless someone gets desperate at the last minute.

Soto and Marmol should each get a decent return if traded. If nobody wants to give anything of value for them, I'd just as soon keep them both in hopes of them either A. contributing to a contender in 2013 or B. building their trade value between now and next winter or summer and if not, count our losses.

I'm also thoroughly convinced that Soriano will be moved for little to no salary relief, and a low level guy and a reclamation type.

Camp, Johnson, Baker, and Corpas could all appeal to contenders, and whether they're part of bigger packages or traded for PTBNL, we should get what we can.

I'm to the point that I'll be very surprised to see Soriano moved before the offseason. He's the best protection we've got for Rizzo and that outweighs moving him for scraps right now.

Here's where Garza comes in. A young, front end starter with another year under team control. While they can't compete with the big boys as far as money, they can with prospects. Regardless of who's in on Hamels or Greinke, if we wanted to work with KC now, we'd be alone. I'm not sure if their system is as bountiful as it once was, but as far as I'm concerned the package can start and end with Wil Meyers.

I don't think the package for a starter with a 4.37 FIP begins and ends with the top-hitting prospect in baseball.

The chance to deal for Wil Myers was this past offseason. They can't move him now, people went ape [expletive] for him all weekend here.

My mock offseason of Garza for Wil Myers (while value was low...though not sure KC would have been interested in offseason), trading for Quentin, trading for Rizzo, and signing Cespedes would have been pretty dirty with the results each have shown. I neglected pitching for the most part, but i'd take a season of crappy pitching for that young core. Though it looked even better when BJax was looking like a stud.

nobody actually believes in protection

Cubs can't dump Soriano until they get someone in a trade that can play LF that can actually hit. The only in house option would be Vitters but it would be a double mistake to rush him to the majors and take him off 3rd where he has more value.

I'd agree with this arguement if Soriano weren't 37, in need of knee surgery, and a lot more likely to decline that improve or even sustain.

This could be why Theo is interested in Ryan Sweeney, and if we could get him without giving up anything of real value, I'd be OK with using him as a stop gap. We then could give Vitters the rest of this season and all or part of next to continue his development and learn LF.

Where is this Sweeney love coming from? The Boston article claiming that Sweeney might be a piece of a phantom Garza trade?

Yes.

There's nothing wrong with Ryan Sweeney, but thinking of him as a target of sorts is pretty goofy. He's 28, already has 4+ years of service time, and hasn't been all that good. From a value standpoint, I don't really see a compelling difference between him and Campana, and certainly not a difference worth giving up trade assets for.

Why? Because it would be a shame to get below average production from a position right now?

Put LaHair there there for now, move DeJesus back to RF and have Campana and friends hold down CF until you callup Jackson.

There's no reason to manufacture nonsensical reasons why they can't move Soriano when the opportunity arises.

Total speculation. He's a nice player, but not one you target and he's redundant on a team that has DeJesus, Campana and throw-in wonder Reed Johnson.

Um, doesn't that kind of mean there is something wrong with him?

Thanks.

I thought I had missed something. There is a pretty wide chasm between what was written in that article and the man love one poster seems to think Theo has for Sweeney.
