Where is this Sweeney love coming from? The Boston article claiming that Sweeney might be a piece of a phantom Garza trade?

Yes.

There's nothing wrong with Ryan Sweeney, but thinking of him as a target of sorts is pretty goofy. He's 28, already has 4+ years of service time, and hasn't been all that good.

Um, doesn't that kind of mean there is something wrong with him?

Maybe better phrasing is that there's nothing wrong with Ryan Sweeney being on the roster, as everyone seems to agree that he's a reserve outfielder/fill-in starter with decent on-base skills and good defense. As a player, he's not a problem, but the whole picture(age, service time, fact he's not currently on the Cubs) mean he's not really worth much effort.

The Orioles' interest in Matt Garza has faded and the O's are now "poking around on Jason Vargas." The Braves are also known to be looking at the Mariners southpaw, as Stark reported last month. MLBTR's Ben Nicholson-Smith recently examined Vargas as a trade candidate.

What if we were to work out a trade with the Tigers. Tigers get Matt Garza, Darwin Barney, Bryan LaHair, and either Junior Lake or Josh Vitters and Cubs get Nick Castellanos, Jacob Turner, and a couple of prospects not in the top Tigers top 10. Maybe like two or three of Adam Wilk, Alex Burgos, Josue Carreno, Kyle Ryan, Eugenio Suarez or Matt Hoffman. I know thats kind of a blockbuster pie in the sky type deal and the Tigers supposedly have Castellanos as off limits. How does Castellanos defense at 3rd look? Saw this trade proposed somewhere else and it seemed intriguing. Im not all that sure its worth it and maybe we could get better pitching trading with someone else.

Turner's value is down significantly. Castellanos has questions about his eventual power and defense.

No thanks. I think we can do better just for Garza.

Lord no. I'd need Castellanos and Turner, just for Garza. As much as his stock has gone up, Turner's has fallen about as much. I'm certainly not giving up other assets on top of Garza just to get those 2. And I really like Castellanos. Turner? Honestly, he may be slightly more than we could hope for in a one for one deal for Dempster, but it's not ridiculously outrageous at this point.

Yeah that seemed like a lot to give up for the 2 of them and a couple lesser prospects.

nobody actually believes in protection

Cubs can't dump Soriano until they get someone in a trade that can play LF that can actually hit.

Why? Because it would be a shame to get below average production from a position right now?

Put LaHair there there for now, move DeJesus back to RF and have Campana and friends hold down CF until you callup Jackson.

There's no reason to manufacture nonsensical reasons why they can't move Soriano when the opportunity arises.

But if you're still paying Soriano- and they'd have to- and getting a lottery ticket back at best, what's the point? I'd rather they sell high on Lahair if they're really going to let Campana be an every day player. As far as Jackson goes, it's hard to say if he'll even be a Sept. call up at this point.

i'm not really sure that anyone wants to deal with epstein and hoyer at this point.

Why not? They've won some, lost some, and broke about even. Overall they have been good but not a group I think anyone should be afraid to deal with.

well, since they joined the cubs front office they've been acquiring positional talent.

i just don't think anyone wants to get taken by them right now, and would be reticent to give up a player that they would show interest in for the simple fact that they've shown interest in them.

Relevant:

ESPN's Jayson Stark was told by sources that the Phillies are preparing a "substantial offer" to Cole Hamels in an attempt to sign the impending free agent in the next two weeks.

The Phillies plan to wait for as long as possible before deciding to become sellers. However, within the next two weeks they should have a pretty good indication of whether they'll be able to retain Hamels for the long haul. The Phillies remain wary of guaranteeing six years or more, but Stark hears that they have had numerous internal discussions about whether to break that precedent with Hamels. The exact details of the offer aren't yet known, but with the 28-year-old left-hander just months away from free agency, they aren't going to get a discount.

what's Tyler Colvin slugging right now?

(please not, i still don't like him, even a little bit)

ostensibly i'm not sure, i'd have to look

It was a lot and increasing when I checked a week or two ago. He was even hitting outside Coors.

But hell, I'd be happy for him to make the The Kid Who Only Hit Home Runs deal if that helped our hand.

Edit for people not exactly my age: think The Natural if he OPSed 5.000 before the playoffs.

Ruben Amaro Jr. is a bonehead.

Why? It's not like the Phillies are going to do a full on rebuild. We're talking one of the best young pitchers in baseball here.

Is this a serious post? Amaro has been awful and has basically doomed the Phillies to high-payroll suckitude for the foreseeable future.

He's also helped to warp the FA market a bit by handing out ridiculous contracts to guys like Ryan Howard and Jonathan Papelbon. I can only imagine the contract he gives Hamels will top Sabathia's by a wide margin

And all they got was 5 lousy consecutive division titles, 2 stupid pennants, and 1 crappy World Series.

No the [expletive] he didn't. Phillies won in 2008. Amaro took over in 2009. Pat Gillick and Ed Wade did all that, and they were also was responsible for acquiring the players that got them there (i.e. Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Cole Hamels, etc.)

Ruben Amaro Jr. took over a World Series Champion and proceeded to [expletive] all over their future.
