i love this quote

For all the past histrionics and even last year’s suspension and anger-management therapy, Zambrano’s actions Friday were extreme enough to surprise even some longtime teammates.

‘‘Yeah,’’ third baseman Aramis Ramirez said, ‘‘because I’ve never seen that before, never seen anybody just pack their stuff and leave and retire, and I’ve been around for a while. Even for him. Players don’t do that.’’

so traditionally everyone has just accepted that there are lower standards of conduct for him, but his problem now is that he's no longer playing well enough to get away with that, and he probably knows it, and maybe that's the source of the retirement threats. personally i was more annoyed by the marmol thing though. i don't mind dramatic outbursts as long as no one else is dragged into it.

Aramis Ramirez is a racist and using latent latino stereotypes.

Carlos Zambrano is the kind of talent that you throw the rules to hell for. It's just Z being Z.

He will be back, and he will dominate the league once again. Meanwhile, Quade will be hoping to catch on as bench coach somewhere.

Hendry is such a [expletive] joke... We are quite literally the only team in baseball that disciplines guys for being dicks.

Of course, this move would save roughly $3 million if it stands. Seems like a shrewd move in a lost season, although I can't imagine it will stand on appeal.

This.

To be clear, no one is saying Z isn't clearly unbalanced. No one is saying racism is the cause of any of this, or that Z isn't worthy of heavy criticism.

The "racist" angle comes from the people who routinely imply that his issues and perceived problems with ARam, Soriano, etc. all have the same root.

Seriously? The relationship is permanently damaged anyways, may as well try and put the money to better use.

If we could, that wouldn't be a problem. But it's a guaranteed contract and Z wants to pitch. Unless I'm missing something major, there's no chance the union wont get all the money back.

Obviously a long shot, and I wouldn't expect the Cubs to win. But it's worth a shot. And there could be things we don't know that could have led the Cubs to think this might work.

After Carlos Zambrano was ejected from Friday's game, Cubs left fielder Alfonso Soriano went into the team's clubhouse and "went off" on Zambrano, a source told CBSSports.com.

Zambrano was very quiet and didn't really say much after being ejected. Then, as soon as Soriano stopped yelling at him in Spanish, Zambrano packed his bag, took the nameplate from his locker and left, the source said.

I didn't know Soriano had it in him.

Soriano's a bad teammate!!!

According to Hendry the disqualified list is the most extreme discipline possible short of outright release. It seems to me like Hendry just decided to impose the worst and let the appeals process take it from there. Even if Zambrano wins on appeal (and I suspect he will) certainly the Cubs would be able to at least impose some suspension without pay. After all, he did walk away without permission and certainly has some responsibility for that.

More importantly, who in the clubhouse can induce the same reaction from Soriano?

I don't get the distaste for the Cubs disciplining him here. He's an employee and his actions were way out of line. And if they cut him loose, he's a pitcher who has put up 1 WAR in 150 innings this year, big whoop.

The problem is going to be if/when "We got rid of that cancer!" becomes the crowning accomplishment of the next six months, as if this solves anything.

I imagine Z will work out some sort of settlement with the Cubs once this whole mess is figured out and he comes back. Then again, if he files his retirement papers, he won't see another dime from the Cubs.

Oddly enough, from a salary standpoint, this might not be the worst thing in the world for this team. An additional $18m in freed up salary would give the Cubs plenty of ammo to go after Pujols and Wilson, with enough left over to pick up some spare parts for the rotation, bench, and bullpen.

When you have a organization that is a joke from top to bottom management-wise players have no respect.

Z is a baby for doing this but the owner created this mess. He let Hendry stay, and hired a terrible manager with a even worse staff.

It's the bed made by the owner and now he's got to sleep in it.

Such a shame Cuban wasn't allowed to buy the Cubs.

Dude that's awesome by Soriano. Most know I'm one of the biggest Soriano haters on the board, sometimes almost always irrationally. But he won a lot of respect from me by doing that.

Pretty cool that Soriano did that. Not as cool as if he were presently a very good baseball player, but still pretty cool.

Cuban wouldn't have done anything different. He said he liked the Cubs' front office. I don't blame them at all for hiring Quade, the results just haven't been good.

Apparently Dempster doesn't much like Zambrano

Dempster on Big Z: “The guys in here are pretty upbeat today. He’s made his bed. He’s got to sleep in it."

I can't believe anyone is defending Zambrano after all the crap he's done over the years; send him packing to the AL and be done with it

I can't believe anybody would rather have Casey Coleman pitching for us next season than Carlos Zambrano... especially when we wont be getting anything in return for Zambrano.

I really don't think Coleman is the alternative we'd be looking at.

FWIW, Buster Olney says the Cubs knew within 2 hours of the game last night that Z wasn't retiring and that Carlos in fact returned his stuff to his locker late last night.

If I had to bet on who would have a better season next year, it'd be Zambrano, but not by a landslide or anything. Zambrano's got a 4.5ish FIP, is on the wrong side of 30 and has almost 2,000 innings on his arm. The peripherals this season point to long-term problems.

Okay, maybe Coleman is a bad example, but it shouldn't be that hard to find pitchers capable of doing what Zambrano's been doing.
