I was also at the game. It really didn't look like he was throwing at him. What did you guys see in tv land?

Haha of course he was throwing at him

Did anyone see LaRussa's comments about the incident?

He didn't see a problem with what Z did in the Chipper at-bat and said that Z was simply trying to get the ball good and in on Chipper. He added that it was unfortunate Z got tossed because once Chipper ducked the second pitch, that was going to be the end of it.

Speaking of Wood, is there any chance we don't all hate him about 5 years after he retires? i get the feeling he's gonna be our color guy and drop a lot of "play the game the right way" stuff on us.

I love all the references to "volatile Cub" and "the mercurial Carlos Zambrano" in the papers.

Z is awesome.

Z may or may not be back with the Cubs, but that money ain't freeing up. It's a wonderful thought, but forget it.

I can't imagine Z or anyone else walking away from $20+M, and the Cubs have no chance of getting out from under it if he's ready/willing/able to play.

The first page of this thread is fairly ridiculous; I can't believe there are actually some defending Zambrano and trying to spin it against hack writers and crappy TV show hosts.

Let's face it, Z is an idiot who pretty much sucks ass at baseball now. He basically gets paid $500,000/week to jog, take BP and throw 120 pitches. Since he's been here, there's never been an authority figure to put him in his place. Not Dusty, not Lou, not Hendry, certainly not Quade (yet...I hope).

I have been a huge Z fan over the years. He's typically been a fun player to watch on a crappy team and he can do some crazy things with a bat in his hands. But seriously Carlos, please retire, get the hell out of here and never come back. Z is now making Cub fans look like fools for even attempting to defend him over the past 2 years. If I had a kid who saw this guy I don't even know what I'd tell him. This is how guys I played with (and myself) acted at age 13.

That's ridiculous. I've defended Z here and elsewhere for his BS over the years, but he's just not worth it anymore.

If he was still a TOR guy, it'd be one thing. But his peripherals have plummeted and the guy's as big an [expletive] as ever.

If they don't exercise the proper discipline now, how can anyone ever take Ricketts seriously? Keeping Z is bad for business.

I love that the first sentence of the post is calling other posts ridiculous. He had a temper tantrum. He'll apologize and be back. He didn't leave during the game, or do anything that was so awful that he can't come back. Silly overreaction.

It was an overly emotional post, but your response isn't much better. He's had too many temper tantrums. He's not worth the headache anymore.

What's the headache here? Presuming he comes back today and says "Hey guys, sorry. Lost my head last night. Was pissed off that I had a shitty game."....what's the damage?

Last nights nonsense isn't bad in a vacuum, but this is par for the course with him. If he was producing like he used to I'd agree with you.

Put it this way: our FO needs to pore over his contract looking for any possible way to get out of it, because he isn't worth the money or the drama. If we end up on the hook, I'll amend my position.

What's the headache? Are you mental?

How many times can a guy say I'm sorry? Why are you defending him? I really don't understand. He has proved he's a joke and really doesn't respect anyone. How would you feel if someone making 10 times as much money as you at your job pretty much acted the way they wanted all the time and made others look like fools?

Yes, what's the headache? That he had a temper tantrum after a bad game was over with? If he shows up again today, it was just him blowing off steam. If he doesn't, and actually retires, then you guys get your way and the Cubs save money. It don't see a headache here. I see drama, but that's what you've always gotten with Z. Byrd's got it right on this one.

Byrd disagreed with manager Mike Quade's assessment that Zambrano "walked out on 24 guys," saying that he was "just frustrated."

"If he goes home for good, it's a different story," he said.

How did Zambrano make any of his teammates look like fools?

I agree with the poster who hopes Z gets the help he needs. I don't claim to know what avenues Z has pursed, but it appears he needs more than anger mgmt classes. Nice article in SI about Mental Health and Pro Athletes. The timing of it sure is interesting.

Who's "you guys"?

I'm disappointed at how not fun this is. Usually this kind of stuff is the best part of a bad Cubs season.

But we already knew Zambrano was going to be the scapegoat this year, and we already knew he was prone to temper tantrums. As bad as he's been, I'm surprised it took this long for him to throw a tantrum.

The meatballs will meatball, the smart fans will resent that reality has caught up with the meatballs and Zambrano actually is pretty bad now, and we'll get to dream for a few days about what we'd do with all that freed-up salary before he comes back.

I'm hoping for him to come back and then retire during the offseason. Save the $18 million for a different GM to use.

On that we can agree. If Z's stubborn as he is talented, we might've just hit the lottery.

Good to see the 'enablers' out in full force.

Very telling that the Braves dugout empties, but not one Cub on the bench moves to come to his defense. Says volumes on how his teammates feel about him.

Just let him leave now and put his money towards Dillon Maples and international players. There's not much of a reason for him to be here.

Are we sure this is likely? Wood doesn't strike me as the type of guy that wants that much attention. Grace was always an ass. Maybe I'm blinded by my affinity for KW, but I'm hoping he becomes a coach or just fades away.
