maybe he's trying to beat wood to the punch and he'll be the new cubs color guy

I'd love to see a three man booth with Len, Bob, and Z. Someone may very well get murdered at some point.

Speaking of Wood, is there any chance we don't all hate him about 5 years after he retires? i get the feeling he's gonna be our color guy and drop a lot of "play the game the right way" stuff on us.

I think that's about as safe a bet as there is. He won't be as bad as Gracie, but I bet he'll be pretty insufferable.

Z probably will show up tomorrow in the clubhouse and make a quick apology. I imagine most of the players will forgive him before he even needs to say anything... everybody realizes how frustrating this season is. Quade seems like he'll probably hold a grudge, but as poorly as he's handled personnel this year... well, I don't think that'll matter for next season.

Hendry has already been trying to find a way to unload Z for a couple seasons now. I don't see this changing anything in that regard... maybe a few of the racist articles make Z a bit more amenable to waiving his NTC this offseason. But the fact of the matter is that Hendry is trying to hold onto his job, and even if he manages to blame this season on injuries and Mike Quade (and it's looking like he may be successful in that regard), he's still going to be under a lot of pressure. Releasing Zambrano is admitting a very expensive failure. Unloading him without getting back any useful pieces or salary relief is admitting a very expensive failure. His only hope of trying to salvage the situation is keeping Z around. Knowing Hendry, there will probably be a suspension with some public statements intended to scapegoat Z, a few attempts to trade him (shocking how little you get offered when you trash your own players), and he'll be in the rotation next spring... slotted in at SP4 or some nonsense.

Paul Sullivan is on the case!

Searching downtown ATL for Big Z to talk some sense into him. Wish me luck.

Just found Z. He's living under a bridge. Gave him some #Cheetos.

Looks like Z was the one looking for Paul.

Ricketts should render all of this moot, for his sake.

I'm trying to think up all the zany things that Zambrano has done as a Cub...anyone got any I missed?

July 2004: Gives up a home run to Jim Edmonds, and points and yells at him while rounding the bases. Later on in the game, he gives up a homer to Scott Rolen, and immediately plunks Edmonds with his next pitch and is ejected.

2004ish: Throws a temper tantrum on the mound and throws his hat after an error by Todd Walker.

April 2005: Gets the opening day start, and manages to get ejected for arguing balls and strikes after 4 2/3 innings with the Cubs holding a big lead.

July 2006: Has to sit out the All Star game after getting hit by Joey Cora's fungo bat during pregame warmups.

June 2007: Gets into a fight with Michael Barrett in the dugout after Barrett allows a passed ball and commits in error during a big inning for the opponents. After punches were thrown in the clubhouse, the fight eventually continues inside the clubhouse. The next day, it is revealed that Barrett was rushed to the hospital to put stitches in his lip after a Zambrano punch.

September 2007: Fans boo Zambrano while he's walking off the mound following a very poor performance during a pennant race. Zambrano responds by pointing to his head and yelling to himself. Later, he calls out Cubs fans, saying they only care about themselves and that he doesn't accept the booing.

May 2009: Zambrano is ejected from a game against the Pirates for arguing a close play at the plate. Zambrano then loses it, getting into a shouting match with the umpire, and bumping him in the process. He then throws the game ball into left field and tossed his glove aside as well. Finally after leaving the field, he takes out his frustrations out on the new Gatorade machine, striking it several times with a baseball bat, effectively destroying it. He ends up suspended for 6 games for bumping the umpire. The next day, he misses the team flight to Atlanta and is temporarily missing.

May 2010: After a slow start to the season, Zambrano is randomly moved to the bullpen. Zambrano takes the demotion well in public and is moved back into the rotation 3 weeks later.

June 2010: After a bad 1st inning, Zambrano throws a tirade in the dugout, which leads to an altercation with Derrek Lee caught on camera. He is removed from the game and immediately sent home. He is later suspended indefinitely by the team and ordered to take anger management classes.

May 2011: After a poor performance by Carlos Marmol where he blows a game to the rival Cardinals, Zambrano lashes out at the team, saying they "stinks" and are playing like a minor league team and are embarrassing. He then questions Marmol's pitch selection and decision making, drawing angry responses from Cubs management.

August 2012: After a very poor start where he gives up 5 home runs in less than 5 innings, Zambrano responds by throwing inside on Chipper Jones on consecutive pitches, the second one way inside and leading to an immediate ejection. After he leaves the game, Zambrano packs up his locker and leaves, telling various Cubs personnel that he is retiring on his way out the door.

Didn't even get into the numerous times he has had to leave starts due to craps in his arm due to too much texting and/or not eating enough potassium. Also haven't mentioned the number of times he has struck out and then broken a bat over his knee.

Oh sweet, I just realized there's a chance Dave Bush gets called up to replace Zambrano.

This night is all kinds of awesome.

Dave Bush opted out of his minor league contract with us and is a FA now, or am I wrong?

You are correct. I hadn't seen anything about it until I did a quick Google search. MiLB.com didn't have anything.

Oh well!

I'm not positive, but this might also be the game where he ejected the umpire.

Yep, that's the one.

can we discuss this as a part of the lineage of out-of-control-ed-ness that has gone on with the cubs players, as well as the resulting residual fiscal damage that has made winning even more difficult, since hendry has been general manager?

zambrano on so many occasions

know i'm forgetting some, but

there is a culture of tantrum with the cubs on hendry's watch. i'm tired of it. i don't even think zambrano is that good of a pitcher, fits aside. he's a 3 on a competing team. he's a 3 that thinks he's roy halladay, and blames everyone else for his own ignorance of who he is. honestly i hope zambrano retires. at least he'd be keeping his word for once. he will be back next year, all happy and talking about how he is going to win the cy young, the world series, and be such a great teammate that there will be a new award named after him. either way, he's an overpaid baseball player who is indicative of the folly of hendry, and further, unfortunately, the cubs. it just never ends.

umfan, are you predicting that chipper jones won't retire this offseason, as well as the 2012 schedule mirroring the 2011 for the cubs series in atlanta?

What about when he didn't shy away from Bonds after throwing up and in at him? I think that was in 03. I miss bad ass Z.

Z has always been bad ass. He is probably the one player I'd least want to have to fight in all of MLB. No one wants a piece of Big Z.

It was just that much cooler when he would intimidate and totally own the opposition.
