And Hendry will spout the "we tried getting him help, anger management, etc.." but it just didnt work. We gave him that contract expecting Carlos to mature and grow as a person but it just didnt work out." Then the media goes back to ripping Z and such

Again, none of that flew with Bradley. It's not going to fly here. Zambrano is going to be ripped to shreds, but so is Quade, Hendry and the rest of the organization.

I dont know you may be right, and if so hopefully its just another step out the door for Hendry.

Yeah, that's potentially a silver lining in this mess.

Wasn't the Z deal relatively praised at the time? That is the inherent risk you take with all contracts. Sometimes what seems to be a good deal turns out to be the exact opposite.

Again, I'll be shocked is he does retire, and we don't end up trading him and eating most of his salary, but he really does, this could potentially be a huge® offseason.

huge®? Really?

What a weird dude. God bless Zambrano. I hope he gets the help he clearly needs.

Yeah, I find this sad more than anything. Sad that he's potentially not pitching anymore, but more sad that this is a man with apparently less emotional maturity than the children he has.

Honestly, I don't find it sad at all. All of that was already known. It didn't take this happening to know that he was basically a man child and pretty much devoid of a normal adult level of maturity.

If he actually follows through on it, this is great expletive news for the Cubs.

In terms of player ability/potential, sure. There was, however, definitely relatively more "risk" for this type of meltdown. This type of behavior was already old by the time he signed his last extension.

Dude, you actually typed out "expletive."

Z has been and still is one of my favorite players. I don't think he's going to retire. I do think he's going to be suspended for the rest of the season and will be released. I think the Cubs will be on the hook for most of his contract. Z needs a fresh start. The Cubs need new management.

Z leaving early isn't that big of a deal. You can bet the usual suspects will make abig deal of it. Quade didn't help matters much with his comments. He just added fuel to the nonsense.

Here's a hopefully paranoid concern:

In the world of meatballs, the Cubs have had 4 players/contracts apparently holding them back since 2008...Fukudome, Soriano, Zambrano and Aramis. Fukudome's gone...maybe Zambrano is...so maybe the organization will be "motivated" to just do away with the rest and go for maximum PR in starting "anew." Cutting ties with Soriano, fine, whatever, you can easily make that argument. Not looking to bring back Aramis, however...gah, that depresses me.

I was also at the game. It really didn't look like he was throwing at him. What did you guys see in tv land?

Are people really shocked by this? I mean I raised an eyebrow, but that was about it. Maybe I'm just jaded, but given all that Z has said and done, this can't be completely shocking to anyone who has been paying attention.

He has said he would retire when his contract was up, maybe he just figured he couldn't stomach being this ineffective and decided to pack it in.

Granted he may well not go through with it, but I am far from stunned by this turn of events.

Byrd disagreed with manager Mike Quade's assessment that Zambrano "walked out on 24 guys," saying that he was "just frustrated."

"If he goes home for good, it's a different story," he said.

Aramis Ramirez said Zambrano hit Chipper Jones for no reason, which precipitated his ejection and the subsequent walkout.

"I don't think they did anything wrong, so there was no reason for him to throw at anybody," he said.

Don't see any way Zambrano stays a Cub after this. The team's gone above and beyond what most other clubs would have to work with Z's problems. His poor performance this season makes it an easy decision.

Right. This really isn't anything surprising. Zambrano's shenanigans are stale. This season never really started. Wake me up if they win 20 in a row....

On the one hand, Z previously talked about retiring at the end of his contract. I can see the motivation; his team sucks, the Chicago media is happy to rip on him at any given opportunity, and he's made his money. The borderline racist crap that will be spewing forth in the next few days will be utterly painful to read.

On the other hand, Z is a headcase and I could see him showing up to the game tomorrow like nothing happened. He's in line for a suspension after what happened tonight, so we'd see him again in about a week.

With $18m potentially freed up next season, I could see the Cubs going after CJ Wilson. Hopefully they'll also ink someone like Jeff Francis or Hiroki Kuroda.

I think we all agree he'll never play another game as a Cub. I don't think he'll retire, but I do hope he tries to become a DH/1B/OF for an AL team. At least we'll have more cash to throw at Pujols/Fielder now.
