I don't have a problem with the way the Cubs handled this, and I'm not particularly upset if Zambrano goes away, but man are the city's beat writers annoying the crap out of me with this one. "ZOMG WE KNEW IT HE'S A CLUBHOUSE CANCER AND HAS NEVER HELPED THE CUBS WIN A SINGLE GAME AND HIS ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING THAT IS WHY WE LOSE AND ALSO HE'S KINDA DARK-SKINNED."

Why did Randy Wells take over Zambrano's locker?

And has there been anything written from Chicago people about Soriano being the one that confronted Zambrano, instigating his blow up? I think I read on cbssports.com the story that Zambrano left the field/dugout relatively calmly, and that Soriano followed him into the clubhouse to rip him to shreds. And it wasn't until after that confrontation that Zambrano actually "quit".

The Marlins, Orioles, and Mariners recently. Our management sucks, but I don't have many complaints about how they handled this. Z's been given more than enough rope.

I'm guessing you're referring to Bradley spending two weeks on the M's restricted list last year (wikipedia says he asked the M's for time off to do that, but it being wikipedia and all, whatever... I'll concede the M's). I don't see anything for the Marlins in the last couple years, so I'm gonna guess you're trying to compare a 1-2 game benching for hustle to a 30 day suspension without pay for being a dick... which seems a bit off. As to the Orioles, the only thing I can figure is Alfredo Simon spending time on the restricted list because he was being held in the Dominican Republic on murder charges... which again, feels like a bit of a different situation.

Did Hanley Ramirez get suspended for a game or two for dogging it last year?

Or maybe he's referring to this:

Florida Marlins minor league P Jeff Allison has been placed on the restricted list, according to the Associated Press. He had been working out at the team's spring training and Class A complex in Jupiter, Fla. A statement released by the team revealed that the organization had become aware of pending legal issues against Allison, and he will remain inactive until they are resolved.

So one of his teammates yells at him, and then he gets all butthurt and quits? Really?

Not sure why that would be a surprise. It's Z we're talking about

I was actually referring to Logan Morrison and Sidney Ponson. Consensus at the time was the Orioles were looking for any reason to get out of the contract because of his poor performance, and the dui was a convenient excuse. Not completely analogous, but close enough. I don't doubt for a second this would've been handled differently if his numbers were better.

Was LoMo actually demoted for off the field stuff? I've heard a bunch saying it was performance. As to Ponson, I don't see how that's "close enough." One guy is breaking laws and putting other peoples lives in jeopardy... another guy doesn't get along well with others. But even that is further muddled when you consider that most people who get DUIs or beat their wives or any other number of awful transgressions get in significantly less trouble with their teams than Carlos Zambrano (or none at all). How you can see so many people get away with so much worse and not see the Cubs reaction as over the top is confusing to me.

I've pointed out already that Z's numbers are fine(ish)... but I know Hendry probably isn't smart enough to realize that so I'll concede he probably would have handled it differently if he hadn't perceived Z's numbers to be so poor.

It's a topic of discussion in the Transactions forum, actually

http://www.northsidebaseball.com//forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=59777

They cited performance and him batting in the .240's, but the GM said he needs to learn all the aspects of being a major leaguer, which insinuated that they demoted him for skipping out on a charity team function, which he skipped out on sort of because the Marlins apparently dicked over his own charity function and had already been to one function that day and Wes Helms, their union representative, told him he could skip it. Helms was later released by the team that day, and Morrison subsequently demoted.

That is the speculation as to why they may be filing an appeal over the demotion.

Zambrano told ESPN's Pedro Gomez that he wanted to join the Cubs on Saturday but was told he couldn't. He also told Gomez that he was incredibly frustrated with the way he's pitched, and said that although he's making $18 million this season, he feels like he's performing like a pitcher making around $2 million.

Just got an e-mail from CSN that Z will be on CTL tonight. Should be interesting.

I'm going to DVR it on the off-chance he rips Kaplan's head off on live tv.

And by rip his head off, I mean literally remove his head from his body. Killing him.

Wouldn't you be shocked to see him actually on-set?

If he's so ashamed he should drop his appeal to the players union and accept the ~$3 million loss of income during the next 30 days.

For the more statistical inclined, how much is the value of a win? I always forget how that works. $4.5 mil per win? Zambrano is has a 1.0 WAR this year, so in reality he's pitching like a $4.5 million pitcher

It depends on who is calculating it and the year. Fangraphs seems to be using a number for this year that is somewhere around 4.5. But remember that WAR is a counting stat. So if Z was pitching the rest of the year and stayed on his current pace, having earned 4.5 million already he'd likely be a 6 million pitcher at the end of the season.

And add in his batting value and it should be closer to about 10 million.

He did physically assault two teammates on national television. His tendency to pull these antics in front of the customers hurts him as much as anything.

Pretty sure the union is who's appealing, not Zambrano. A union isn't going to let a team take away 1/6 of a member's income because they're mad at him.

This is the full interview with @TheKapMan.

I actually feel really bad for Z after listening to this.

"If I want to hit him, I hit him! I don't want to hit anyone with splitters, or sliders, or cutters. Who wants to hit someone with those pitches??"

Fantastic.

The look on Kaplan's face at the end when Zambrano screwed up his name was priceless.
