I love Ethan Martin more than I should. I think Dee Gordon is overrated. I'm not a big Lambo fan either. There's no way you can get two of their best prospects, but there are some intriguing lower tier guys who are projectable.

You should be talking to the Dodgers and the Rays. Just ignore the Mets.

Yeah, I feel the same way about Martin. If we could land a Wade Davis, I think that would be interesting. I think he could do very well with Rothschild. Problem with dealing with the Rays is that they understand the value of cheap production, unlike the Cubs, Mets, or Dodgers.

Do you guys think Lilly goes at the deadline, or maybe yesterday was his last start in a Cubs uniform?

Personally, I'd be shocked if we made a move during our 10 game homestand. After the Cards leave town next Sunday, that's when you're likely to see Hendry go into "sell" mode.

The Tigers inquired about Ted Lilly, according to ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark. Buster Olney reports that the sides haven’t discussed a deal in over a week, though the left-hander would be a good fit for the Tigers.

The ESPN reporters say the Cubs are communicating with a number of teams about Lilly, who is “very available.” ESPN.com’s Bruce Levine reported yesterday that teams such as the Tigers were pursuing Lilly.

The 34-year-old has a 4.07 ERA with 6.5 K/9 and 2.2 BB/9 this season and projects as a Type A free agent. The Tigers could use that kind of arm, since they have had inconsistent production from starters other than Justin Verlander and Jeremy Bonderman. At 48-42 the Tigers are tied for second in the AL Central, but like the White Sox and Twins, they could use depth in their rotation.

The Tigers, who would consider adding a shortstop, have had interest in Ryan Theriot before and could inquire about him as well. Last year, the Tigers added left-hander Jarrod Washburn for the stretch run, though he didn't pitch as well as they would have hoped (7.33 ERA in Detroit).

And Inge is now out for 4-6 weeks opening a huge hole at 3rd as well. I know the Tigers shed payroll this offseason, so most trades for them will have to add minimal salary. What's out there on the 3B market, Tejada?

Maybe they shift Guillen to third and we trade them Theriot? They've shown interest in him already.

Despite what may or may not be true of the pitching there, it seems the media and fans are clamoring more for a bat. ESPN Radio discussed Aramis and Brian Roberts today. The fan response to Aramis was emphatically no, as well as balking at giving up Porcello to acquire him (I agree), but they seemed to think they could pry Roberts out of Baltimore for not much more than a song.

What about Cantu? If he's a FA after the season, why doesn't florida see what they can get for him? I would imagine he won't cost as much, and still gives them flexibility to use the good arms in the minors to acquire a bigger bat after the deadline when more teams are out.

I think if they can take salary on the Dodgers are a great fit for Ted Lilly. I would be interested in Pedroza and Sands out of AA. Sands looks to be a beast but maybe if we handle some salary he could slide into 1B for the Cubs in the near future.

Packaging Theriot and Lilly seems ideal. I don't know enough about the Tigers to know what a good, even, or poor return would look like however.

From Stark:

•Six teams or more are interested in Ted Lilly, who will almost certainly get traded. The Tigers, Mets and Dodgers have interest, but the Yankees probably won’t be involved. The Cubs are not willing to pick up any of Lilly’s salary and probably won’t have to.

From Morosi:

Sources tell Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com reports that there has been an uptick of interest in Ted Lilly since his outing on Wednesday.

Lilly tossed seven innings of one-run ball in a tough no-decision against the Astros on Wednesday. This, after striking out 10 against the Phillies last week. Morosi reports that the Mets and Tigers are among the clubs interested in the veteran left-hander. According to Jayson Stark of ESPN.com, at least six teams have interest in Lilly.

Hopefully that doesn't mean we'd get crap prospects in return.

I hope we don't get stuck with that Miguel Cabrera bum.

If that's the case we're better off offering him arby and letting him walk

It seems to me that a lot of people here undervalue Lilly. He's been very good for 4 years now. I'll be surprised if we don't get a fairly decent return even without having to pay any of his salary. He's not Cliff Lee but he's a pretty big deadline pick up.

You're in luck then.

If the return on Lilly is MUCH better with us paying salary, I'd be very disappointed if we didn't do it. But, the fact is this: He'll be offered a multi year deal next year by someone, so offering him arbitration is a must. So whatever a team gives up, they'll be able to replenish it to some degree anyway. And with the 2011 draft class being excellent, they're possibly better off with the picks than with whatever they may give us.

Bottom line for me is I expect a decent return for him. Maybe not a top 100 overall guy, but at least one guy who'll be in our top 10 and another guy who's top 30 anyway. If we don't get that, it better be because we got someone who's already in the majors as the centerpiece of the trade.

Personally, I'd rather trade Theriot separately. Unless Detroit is willing to give us a fairly bigtime prospect(Andy Oliver?) and more for the pair(and they don't have a great system, by any stretch).

By the way, no one talking about Lee getting moved, so I guess he's just not needed by contending teams? I can't think of anyone other than the Angels that are in need of a 1B, is there anyone else that does?

agreed. Not sure why he's undervalued. He's no Joe Blanton.

From DeLuca:

With contenders struggling to find the right match for available starters Roy Oswalt and Dan Haren on the trade market, interest in Cubs left-hander Ted Lilly has stepped up dramatically and a trade could be completed by the end of the weekend, major-league sources said Friday.

from that article:

Lilly’s trade value skyrocketed after he held the Houston Astros to one run in 7 1/3 innings Wednesday.

really??? his value skyrocketed because he had a good start against a bad team? if that's true, mlb GMs are among the stupidest people on earth.
