I'm hoping Oswalt is difficult in waiving his NTC. The longer he waits the more valuable Lilly becomes. However, that's not to say I think he'll be difficult nor do I have any reason to believe he'll do so. And only a handful of teams can afford to take on Oswalt's salary for the next few years, anyway. The more I think about it, the more I think we really could get a respectable package back for Lilly.

With any other GM I'd feel confident in getting value for Lilly, but I'm prepared for something like an Omar Infante + PTBNL.

Not a big Hendry fan here but I do not think that is fair or accurate.

I think Hedry normally does fine making trades, but the last time he was in this situation they traded Maddux for Izturis, so there may be some cause for concern. Hendry then made some sort of weird comment after the trade about not wanting prospects or something (I don't remember exactly).

lol...we were all mad because we thought with could get Andre Ethier in that trade. What a boon that would have been for us.

A little blurb on Lilly in Chris De Luca's article in today's Suntimes

<>

I looked up the stats on each of the Met's "prospects." Wow, all of them have some ugly peripherals in A+ ball. I really hope Hendry can pull together a better return for Lilly if he trades him.

Jeurys Familia throws very hard and is rather raw. He's an intriguing arm to get but not the guy I'd want to build a Lilly trade around.

Those guys are all pretty young for the level at which they are playing. Also, FWIW, John Sickels ranked the two RHP fairly high before this season. Having said that, I've never seen any of them play and I'm not necessarily advocating in favor of them.

BA said Familia had the 2nd fastest fastball behind Tanner Scheppers at the Futures Game. I still have the game on DVR, I might check his appearance out.

But that is exactly what the Cubs would be doing by trading Lilly for the guys mentioned. And I disagree with trading him for those players, as they would not provide any value financially for the future of the Cubs or on the field (which I believe I already said). So, why are you disagreeing with me, when we obviously agree. Are you just in the mood to disagree?

Saw this on twitter, and not sure if it's accurate or not..

According to Bruce Levine, the #Tigers, #Twins, #Mets and #Dodgers are among the teams interested in Ted Lilly.

I would love to see the Dodgers involved here. Ned Colletti doesn't seem to mind overpaying with good prospects at the trade deadline (Casey Blake for Carlos Santana and George Sherrill for Josh Bell come to mind).

According to Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune, Ted Lilly met with Cubs general manager Jim Hendry on Thursday in order to discuss his future.

"I don't know if I have the right to discuss that," said Lilly. "Write whatever you want." With the Cubs nine games out of the National League Central, the impending free agent is a near-lock to be traded this month. According to Sullivan, the Mets and Twins have shown interest in the veteran left-hander.

Who do the Dodgers have in their system now that would be a a player we could conceivably swindle from Colletti?

Adding payroll may be an issue for them this time around.

Luckily, not Cesar Izturis.

I would love getting any of the Dodgers 5 top prospects - in no particular order, SS Dee Gordon (Tom's son), OF Andrew Lambo, LHP Aaron Miller, RHP Chris Withrow and RHP Ethan Martin. I think Gordon's rated their best prospect but I prefer Martin (athletic pitcher with great stuff). Imo, all but Lambo would be the 2nd best prospect in the system behind Brett Jackson.

Miller was drafted last year but I'm not sure when he signed. So he might not be tradeable yet.

One of the reasons Colletti claims he gives such good prospects is that he gets the other team to pick up salary. That's more important now with the McCourt divorce.

yeah if you can do a deal with the dodgers, go for it. i'd go after miller, since we could definitely use a quality LHP prospect. trayvon robinson seems like a good high-ceiling guy to target. nobody seems to think jerry sands is a great prospect, but he won't stop hitting. and i'd also make them throw in kyle russell, just because his nickname (texas wind machine) is awesome.

I really hope that if nobody offers a good enough return for him we just offer arb and pocket a pair of draft picks. I know he loved Chicago, but not enough to not make the most out of a weak FA class. Even at his age, he should be able to net 1 more 3 year deal.

I agree, even if he accepted (which he won't) it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

I wouldn't mind taking a flier on Scott Elbert if we're talking with the Dodgers. Obviously not the main piece in a trade at this point, but still...

MLBTR evaluates Lilly's trade value:

Starting pitching is always at a premium, especially during the mid-to-late July trade season. With Cliff Lee now off the market, Cubs' southpaw Ted Lilly takes over the title of most coveted starter available. He offers much more affordability than either Roy Oswalt and Dan Haren, both in terms of money and trade cost.

Lilly, 34, struck out ten Phillies across seven innings today, and will go to bed tonight the proud owner of a 4.07 ERA with a 6.49 K/9 and 2.16 BB/9. He missed the first few weeks of the season with a shoulder issue that appears to have robbed him of some velocity, but otherwise he's made at least 25 starts in every season since 2003. Lilly has plenty of experience in the American League, however he hasn't faced the DH regularly since 2006.

There's approximately $5.3M left on his contract this year, and he'll head onto the free agent market after the season as a Type-A free agent barring a total collapse in the second half. In theory, the Cubs would need to receive two prospects in a trade that are equal to or greater in value than the two high draft picks they would receive next year if they let Lilly walk as a free agent.

The Mets reportedly have interest in the southpaw after losing out on Lee, as do the Rays. The Twins and Tigers have also been mentioned as possible suitors. Minnesota has highly touted (and blocked) catching prospect Wilson Ramos to deal, and Tampa has more prospects than they know what to do with, so putting a package together won't be an issue for them.

Jarrod Washburn was in a similar situation last season, and was eventually traded for two good, but certainly not great prospects in Luke French and Mauricio Robles. Lilly has a better track record and has a little bit more money left on his deal, but the Washburn deal could serve as a guide for what the Cubs should expect in return.

Andrew Lambo and Ethan Martin for Ted Lilly and I'm absolutely thrilled. If the Cubs somehow can get Scott Elbert thrown in, well, I don't want Hendry to save his job, but it'd be a nice parting gift.

I don't want anything to do with Lambo. He's already got 2 strikes for substance abuse. I think we'd be extremely lucky to get one of their top 5 for Lilly myself. I love Gordon, but he;s kind of redundant for us, since we have Castro already and Lee potentially on the way in a few years as well. I rank Martin, Miller and Withrow in that order and I'd put Trayvon Robinson higher than Lambo myself, based on Lambo's situation.

I love Ethan Martin more than I should. I think Dee Gordon is overrated. I'm not a big Lambo fan either. There's no way you can get two of their best prospects, but there are some intriguing lower tier guys who are projectable.

You should be talking to the Dodgers and the Rays. Just ignore the Mets.

If the Mets want pitching as much as they say, I wonder if we could sucker them into taking Z, as long as they dont sucker us into taking Oliver Perez in return. The down side there is if Z doesnt like the Wrigley boo birds, Mets fans could send him on a killing spree.

Also, maybe selling them high on Silva is a possibility.

Personally, I wouldnt cry id we moved Z, Lilly, and Silva, and next year start with a rotation of Demp, Wells, Gorz, Cashner, and Diamond/Jackson. Or else, maybe we could try to buy low on Eric Bedard, Justin Ducherer(or whatever), or Brandon Webb, depending how low theyd go.

So, you're saying it'd be like the beginning of The Last Boy Scout?

I fail to see the down side in that.
