Honestly Joseph and someone else with his talent level at a different spot IS probably appropriate value for Lilly. But not just him. If Lilly is NOT a type A, he's still got more value than just Joseph and that's how the Cubs have to be approaching these types of offers.

At this point, I want something close to a top 100 guy or hold onto him and offer him arby.

gorzo hasn't been as good as his ERA this year.

Right, but a 4.16 xFIP and an 8.72 K/9 from a cheap 28-year-old pitcher is still pretty solid. Listening to offers is perfectly fine, but I'd want a pretty good deal to trade him.

To trade Gorzelanny, I'd definitely want a very solid return. I doubt he's moved though. He would have been perfect as a major piece in a Haren deal, if we were going for it, instead of selling. He's the type of guy who could get moved in an offseason deal where we'd acquire a bigtime 1B or maybe an upgrade for the staff. He's the perfect "hey, we got a solid major leaguer, along with some good prospects" type guy that small market teams like to sell their fans on when they trade away someone about to get expensive. Randy Wells would fit this criteria as well actually.

As far as Lilly goes, he's the 2nd best option out there right now, behind Oswalt(who only has a few teams interested because of salary anyway). And the list of teams that have either been mentioned with Lilly or at least been mentioned with starting pitching include the Yankees, Rays, Red Sox, White Sox, Twins, Tigers, Phillies, Mets, Dodgers, and Rockies. Ten teams. Is Lilly good enough to make teams want him, before deciding to take Brett Myers Paul Maholm, Jake Westbrook, Jeremy Guthrie, or Kevin Millwood for cheaper? I actually think so.

OT, but is the trade deadline 4PT EST or Midnight this year?

I hope it's midnight. Not only does it give the GM's more time to swing a deal, but one thing I always loved as a kid was waking up on my birthday (August 1st), turning on the TV and seeing all the guys who got traded.

Yankees are interested now. Probably pissed for losing out on Lee and Harden. Maybe this makes them more likely to make a bigger offer:

Heyman doesn't see the Yankees going after Roy Oswalt, but tweets that they like Ted Lilly.

Is it possible that there aren't any offers for Lilly yet actually on the table? Because I fully expected him to be dealt before his next start(tomorrow?). We're doine with the homestand, he's coming off 2 straight solid outings(which evidently means more than I had thought previously) AND with DeJesus' injury, I just figured we wouldn't take any chances......I guess alot can happen between now and tomorrow, but I was really figuring there would be a bunch of news all day on Lilly......

I'm just wondering if everyone is waiting on everyone else before they make a move, realize that nobody HAS in fact made an offer yet, then we'll see a mad dash on the 30th and 31st.

Or people are actively negotiating and we just haven't heard about it yet.

From Bruce's blog:

We'll also see if Ted Lilly is around to take the mound tomorrow down in Houston. The return the Arizona Diamondbacks got from the Angels for pitcher Dan Haren drew a big "meh" from a lot of observers. It could go either way. There might not be much offered for Lilly, or with one fewer pitcher on the market, Lilly could be more attractive. GM Jim Hendry seems intend on saving the Ricketts family a few bucks. But if nothing good is offered, the Cubs might be better off Lilly is a Type A free agent so they can offer him arbitration and get the draft picks when he signs a multiyear deal elsewhere.

There goes Bruce, putting logic into a situation in which there is none. Has Hendry ever offered arbitration to a Type A in order to get the draft picks?

I know its just Steve Stone, but I flipped on the Sox game for a moment, and he was saying that the Twins are looking to make a deal for Ted Lilly.

Delmon Young for Lilly please. Time to go to bed so I can dream of that actually happening.

I never realized it until you asked...but the answer as it relates to pocketing draft picks appears to be no. :-s

Then this may be a perfect first time opportunity.

It's not like the Cubs have let a lot of good players go over the years. I was trying to find out who was potentially type A in the past earlier and found that maybe Alou and Wood were the two most high profile that the Cubs declined on? Was there anybody else besides random middle relievers?

oh i would do ted lilly for delmon young in a minute. k rate is way down, power is up, and he's only 24 years old. i guess it depends what else you could get for lilly, but i'd take the chance that this year is not a fluke from young.
