I'm not expecting as much now as far as prospects go honestly. Reason being is simple: There aren't as many bidders now, as teams have either made moves already or fallen out of the race. Plus, while Lilly may be the best of what's left, he's not SO MUCH better that some team will overpay to get him instead of Maholm, Carmona, Westbrook, Edwin Jackson, and whoever else may be available right now......

The latest on Cubs lefty Ted Lilly...

•The Twins, who are on Lilly's no-trade list, are unlikely to acquire him, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports (on Twitter).

•The Mets are still engaging the Cubs about Lilly, according to Newsday's Ken Davidoff, who suggests a deal is unlikely (Twitter link).

•A Mets official told Joel Sherman of the New York Post it's "very doubtful" they acquire Lilly. The Mets do not want to take on most to all of the $4.37MM left on Lilly's contract and give up prospects too. As for Brett Myers, the Astros are "almost completely unwilling to engage in serious discussions." Sherman says the Mets might wait until August to acquire a pitcher.

•Yesterday we learned that the Dodgers and Twins are still in on Lilly.

I bet Lilly stays a Cub.

Whatever happens, I'll be pretty upset if we trade him just to trade him and get less than we would if he signs elsewhere in the offseason. Not sure who is at fault for not getting a deal done sooner, as there were a lot of decent pitchers out there this deadline, but it would suck to see Hendry make an Izturis like trade at this point.

Why the hell wouldn't the Astros trade Myers too? What good does keeping him around do them?

It only costs them 6 million to keep him next season.

Shouldn't everyone not named Castro and maybe Pence be available off of that roster?

Sure, in theory. But for the cost to them next year, they'd be hard pressed this offseason to sign someone who would be as productive for as cheap. Yes, they're not going to win the division next year, but they don't want to set records on futility. If the Yankees offered Montero+Joba, I'm sure they'd take it, but why would someone overpay that much?

Granted I don't know much about the prospects in the 2012? draft, but I would think if I was gonna be bad I'd go for horrible bad. Granted their m.o. isn't to try and build from within, so who knows what they will do. Plus Brett Myers is a horrible, reguardless of what he does as a pitcher.

I don't know if anybody knows this, but he beats his wife.

Horrible bad lowers ticket sales and attendance that much more. You've got to keep some form of trying to compete in some fashion to keep a few fans in the seats. If you try to be horrible bad, you'd be lucky to have 1,000 fans in the seats for games.

But why? This isn't like basketball where horrible bad can lead to an amazing draft pick that can help immediately start turning your team around. Yeah, the higher pick is nice, but steering a baseball team to be "horrible bad" is a horrible plan. It just mires the team in crap for years to come, which heavily impacts revenue and further impedes efforts to improve the team. Draft picks are too much of a gamble to expressly "go for horrible bad."

The Astros don't rebuild. They probably think with Happ instead of Oswalt they save money, get a pitcher who can be decent and hopefully things fall into place and they can contend next year. No one else believes that but they've never had the guts to just dismantle their team. At this point though, I don't see many players outside of Myers that would give them much value. Berkman is old and not the player he was a couple of years ago so his value is much lower. Lee is having a horrific year and makes way too much money to get anything good for him. Pence has value but would you trade a cheap young asset like that? Maybe.

Houston has a really bad female crime rate, they need someone to keep them in check.

Fielder & Hart Are Off The Market

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 29 at 8:23pm CST]

The Brewers have decided that they’re too close to contention to sell, according to ESPN.com's Keith Law. An executive from a club that had interest in a Brewers player explained to Law that Milwaukee has changed its approach to Saturday's deadline. That means Prince Fielder and Corey Hart are no longer available to teams seeking power bats.

Despite being a distant 3rd place at 9 games out, theres a team who could use a pitcher like Lilly if they're really that delusional. Id gladly take Mat Gamel off their hands for him.

Dodgers Discussing Deal For Lilly, Theriot

By Tim Dierkes [July 30 at 7:10am CST]

The Dodgers and Cubs are discussing a trade that could send Ted Lilly and Ryan Theriot to Los Angeles, report Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. They say it's not known whether a deal is close. The Cubs would need to kick in cash - Lilly has $4.3MM remaining and Theriot has $933K.

Theriot received a $2.6MM salary for 2010 after losing an arbitration case to the Cubs in February. He's under team control through 2012; the FOX writers see him taking over at second base for the Dodgers. It doesn't seem to be the strongest need for them, with Blake DeWitt currently outperforming Theriot and Jamey Carroll and Ronnie Belliard also on the roster.

There aren't a ton of great matches for Lilly at this point, as action with the Tigers, Twins, and Mets has cooled and the Phillies are out of the mix. I wonder if we'll hear anything about the Cardinals and Padres looking at the lefty.

Must we have the inevitable "I'll take their total stud guy in a trade, haha" post every time there's a rumor? That joke has been used here in basically every transaction thread for 7-8 years. Let it die.

Anyways, that would be ideal.

Completely agree with this. The MLB Draft is by far the biggest crapshoot of pro drafts, so it makes little sense to tank simply in hopes of moving from pick 15 to pick 7 or whatever. Plus, draft boards vary so much from team to team, you might end up getting the guy you want anyway, even at a lower slot.
