Jeff Fletcher of AOL Fanhouse reports that the Dodgers are waiting for Cubs to throw in more money in a trade for Ted Lilly.

Lilly is owed over $4 million for the rest of the season. With teams dropping out of the mix for the left-hander by the minute, the Cubs might have to make some concessions by Saturday's deadline.

Seriously? Teams are balking at $4 million? That's not a great sum in this day. Especially if they make the playoffs, they'll make that up and more in postseason revenue.

Lilly doesn't guarantee anybody the playoffs, and in the case of the Dodgers, their ownership is in the middle of a divorce that is tearing at the finances of the organization.

Oh, you guys aren't going to like this.

Cubs still working with Dodgers on Lilly, Theriot deal. Could still wind up with DeWitt and pitcher from minors.

Don't the Cubs have leverage to just keep Lilly and get Type A compensation for him in the offseason (assuming they offer him arby)? Or are the Cubs really desperately trying to shed some of Lilly's salary to offset the loss of attendance this season?

Hendry doesn't offer arb.

Hasn't DeWitt pretty much been a left handed Theriot clone?

Eh, he's definitely a hell of a lot better than Theriot this year, he's 6 years younger and he's a lot cheaper.

In '07 as a 21 year old he had an .804 OPS repeating high A for 83 games, and .772 for 45 games in AA. They started him in AAA for the next year and he had an. 852 OPS in only 111 AB's and then had a .264/.344/.383 line in 368 AB's for LA. .775 OPS in AAA last year for 352 AB's while getting hardly any time with the Dodgers. .726 OPS this year.

He'll be 25 next year so there's still room for improvement. I have no idea how his defense is but if it's plus, he could project as a cheap fill-in at 2B for a few years hopefully until Lee is ready.

Aaron Miller or Ethan Martin if the Cubs are paying Lilly.

He outperformed him by a significant margin in the minors and his brief major league career has been about as good as Theriot's career year. I don't know much about the guy, but if he can be a better 2B option than what they have for the next few years it's not a bad idea.

Blake DeWitt in a package for Lilly? It seems Jim spits in the face of job security, and the wind forever stops blowing.

Izturis redux.

Izturis was 2 years older with 2500 major league plate appearances of essentially 600 OPS and a 60 OPS+ and absolutely no minor league production. This guy is younger with a 150 point minor league OPS advantage and a 30-something OPS+ advantage in the majors. He at least appears to be a potentially competent starter. Although he's hardly somebody to get excited about. I'd consider it a much lesser mistake than the Izturis acquisition.

The most disappointing part of a DeWitt acquisition would be that he is not that much different from somebody like Fontenot. While it would be helpful to have another backup 3B/2nd base option on the roster and DeWitt isn't a bad player to have, Fontenot's presence makes him a lot less valuable to the Cubs. It would be an ok trade but not a very exciting one unless the minor league pitcher ending up being good.

Have they just given up on Fontenot? Do they hate his defense? Has Lou determined the organization's opinion about him?

Man, Blake DeWitt sucks.

This is what happens when your GM fears for his job if he doesn't win soon. He trades for shitty major leaguers cause they'll "help" next season.

Exactly what I thought. This would only make sense if the pitcher is really good but it's probably Ely.

Hendry really, really sucks at trading guys away.

I assume you mean being a seller compared to being a buyer, but that's not really true. When he's not dead-set on getting a major leaguer in return, he's pretty good at it.
