I don't really expect a ton for a month and a half of Ted Lilly. Sorry, but I just don't. I just hope we look for a minor leaguer.

Two months of Lilly(the best starter on the market) and a pretty decent chance at a first round & sandwich pick.

If they offer arbitration.

The most disappointing part of a DeWitt acquisition would be that he is not that much different from somebody like Fontenot. While it would be helpful to have another backup 3B/2nd base option on the roster and DeWitt isn't a bad player to have, Fontenot's presence makes him a lot less valuable to the Cubs. It would be an ok trade but not a very exciting one unless the minor league pitcher ending up being good.

This.

I dunno, DeWitt is only 24 and coming off an injury last season, right? Couldn't he develop a bit of pop (10 HR's a year or so) and be a solid starting 2B with an .800 OPS for 3 or 4 years?

I would think he would have a better chance to hit homers in Wrigley than Dodger Stadium. How much, I am not sure.

Lilly isn't Derrek Lee making way over his market value. He's going to get offered arbitration because he will most assuredly get multiple years at at least what he's making this year.

Hey, you can never have too many SS prospects. I'm not a huge fan of Gordon, but I'd be happy if the Cubs got him in a Ted Lilly deal. He's a Top 100 prospect with some nice upside.

Also, fun side note, he's Tom Gordon's son.

If it is only John Ely and the Cubs are paying Lilly, this just further proves Hendry can't get the job done.

No, but aren't the Dodgers really strapped for cash?

They don't have to be the ones that re-sign him. Lilly is a pretty safe assumption to decline arbitration. And if the Dodgers are too risk averse to consider him worth his performance + the draft picks, the Cubs need to deal with someone who does.

Also of note, Dee Gordon is from Windermere, FL.

Oh I agree, I just think they might not risk it as they might not want the extra first round picks. They cost money also.

Lilly is (arguably) the best starter LEFT on the market.

The teams that were prepared to pay up, have already filled their needs with better guys.

Now what's left are the bargain-hunters, so this should come as no surprise.

The only person better than Lilly to change hands is Oswalt. It's not like 4 teams have added SP and the Cubs are left to deal Lilly to either the Pirates or the Royals. The Yankees, Mets, Tigers, Dodgers, and Twins have been linked to Lilly.

We'd finally have a legitmate base stealer in our future if we got Gordon. We'd also have an over-crowded middle infield in a couple years.

Hendry always has loved him some middle infielders.

No thanks:

BA had him as the #2 prospect in the MWL last season behind Aaron Hicks and ahead of guys like Brett Lawrie, Jaff Decker, Mike Montgomery, Eric Hosmer, and Josh Vitters. BA also listed him as the #46 prospect in baseball in the offseason and they have him somewhere in the 26-50 range in their midseason top 50.

He's a good prospect and a better return than what anyone else would be willing to give the Cubs in return for Lilly.

We should already have that with Hak-Ju Lee. I'm not opposed to adding Gordon, however.

The numbers aren't that bad. If we were thin at SS in this system I'd be all for Gordon. I still wouldn't complain if we got him, but I rather see Jim address another position.
