I would imagine Lilly is a Type A free agent this offseason so Hendry should be looking for sandwich round equivalent talent or pass.

And no Cesar Izturises.

If Lilly will be a Type A, shouldn't he be looking for more than one guy at that level?

Still can't believe Hendry made the Maddux trade to LA. :banghead:

I think that Flores would be too ambitious, even if we were paying Lilly's salary possibly. But, I'd be interested in Ruben Tejada or Reese Havens as an eventual 2B option. I'd also be interested in buying low on Brad Holt. I wouldn't mind getting a 1B prospect either, Nick Evans or preferrably Eric Campbell. Someone like Holt and one of those guys would be a decent haul for Lilly, if you ask me.

Gammons reported that the Cubs are definitely shopping Lilly but would be interested in bringing him back after the season is up.

Personally, I'd be against bringing him back at this stage of his career.

It would be so terribly Cub-like to trade Lilly and then bring him back next season costing us draft picks.

Of course it would be more Cub-like for the prospects we trade for in the first place blowing up in our faces.

There's a whole lot of pitchers we'd have to get rid of before I'd be interested in bringing back Lilly.

Well, it would only cost them a 2nd, since their 1st will be protected (assuming that's how the system still works).

Yeah, as long as they're one of the 15 worst teams this season, the pick will be protected.

I'm not sure what the point of bringing back Lilly is.

There wouldn't be any point. Unless the Cubs significantly upgrade the roster next year, Lilly isn't going to make much of a difference.

There really isn't one.

Hopefully Diamond has made enough of an impression where he has become option as a starter next year, Jackson and Cashner should be candidates as well but who knows what the organization is thinking.

Between those 3, hopefully 2 of them can step up in case they do trade Lilly and Silva and don't bring them back.

Exactly. There are 3 solid options that would be ready to start from day 1 next season. Hell, you can add Coleman and Samardzija to that list in emergency situations. There's no point in committing more money to the rotation.

Even if our 3 major league ready starters all flame out, you still have 5 guys currently on the roster that are starting pitchers. There is no reason to sign Lilly to some ridiculous contract just so we don't have to run the risk of actually trying out our minor league talent.

Exactly. If you want to spend money on a starting pitcher, that's a different argument. But Lilly going forward is going to be millions of dollars more expensive, and not much better(if at all).

From MLBTR:

Jamey Newberg says the Rangers should seriously consider trading Chris Davis or Justin Smoak if there's a real chance to improve the club

Lilly for one of those guys to replace DLee sounds good to me.

I'll throw in solid prospect with Lilly (knowing Lilly isn't going to re-sign) for Smoak. But it is Lilly a pitcher that can improve the Rangers? I hate the thought of Lilly at The Ballpark at Arlington in the middle of the summer.

Chris Davis I get, but Justin Smoak? Are they already willing to deal that guy? I know he's started off slow but yeesh, they must really be hungry for a World Series.

No way Lilly nets Smoak. Davis, sure I could probably see that. But not Smoak. He'd probably coast too much
