Nobody is taking Lilly

I wouldnt go that far. Between tonight, his last outing vs the Reds, or at least that 1 inning where he melted down horribly with 2 outs and the game vs. the Angels, hes had some brutal outings lately, but he has a good enough track record that a lot of teams will still be very interested in him, especially with Cliff Lee off the market.

I don't understand the Fernando Martinez love. He's not a power hitter, he's not a base stealer, he's not an amazing contact hitter, he's not patient...

Does he project to evolve into something better because his numbers are drastically mediocre. Is he an elite defender? I know he's still young so there's room for improvement but what is his ceiling? His numbers don't really inspire much excitement

He's 21 with a strong pedigree. Here are his prospect rankings. I will admit they are trending in the wrong direction. He is also injury prone:

Prospect Ratings by Baseball America:

Pre-2007: Rated #22 Prospect

Pre-2008: Rated #20 Prospect

Pre-2009: Rated #30 Prospect

Pre-2010: Rated #77 Prospect

He had a stronger campaign last year and his doubles may turn into homers later. The question is whether he (and another Met prospect) are better than two 2011 sandwich picks.

I don't have the past ratings but this reads alot like the Lastings Milledge story as I remember it. Over-Hyped and brought up too early when expectations were too high.

Nobody is taking Lilly

Nobody's going to be interested in a lefty with a 4.08 ERA and 1.15 WHIP? He needs to have a couple of good starts to have a real shot at a really nice return, but there's going to be interest in him (already is from the Mets).

Agreed. What better SP is available other than Oswalt, who apparently doesn't want to go to many of the teams that could use him.

Haren. If he's available anyway. But even if he is, there's around ten teams supposedly looking at starting pitching and Lilly is definitely next on the list, after those two. I'm not worried if a team will take him whatsoever.

That said, he's got 3 more starts between now and the deadline. I'd REALLY like to see him pitch well in each of them, so we can maximize the return. He's got added value as well, since he's going to be a type A and with the scarcity of pitching on the market next year, he's assured of getting more than a one year deal barring injury.......

Rays are said to be interested in Lilly as well.

•Cafardo wouldn't be shocked if the Rays were willing to discuss trading Matt Garza, with Jeremy Hellickson waiting in the wings (2.21 ERA in 105.2 Triple-A innings). In exchange for an impact bat, the Rays appear more inclined to deal major league players than prospects. A National League scout tells Cafardo that the team has been "very willing to include B.J. Upton in trade talks" and may even think about moving Wade Davis, if the price was right.

•The Rays also have some interest in Ted Lilly, who could be a fit for the Twins and Tigers as well.

If we could get Hellickson or Desmond Jennings it would make this trade deadline a complete success.

I don't think Jennings is available. I believe Desmond is the eventual repacement for either Carl Crawford or BJ Upton. So I doubt the Rays will consider moving him.

He's not, but he is one of the few prospects I have really wanted for the past 2 years. Upton will be gone to make room for him just as Garza will be gone to make room for Hellickson. It's the Tampa way and they will get some more replacement prospects for them too.

No team is going to trade a top 5 prospect in the whole game for Ted Lilly, let alone a team like the Rays that are very stingy trading prospects.

But it's good to see 3 new teams interested in Lilly. The Twins (Ramos, Gibson and Hicks) and Rays have some intriguing prospects (besides Jennings and Hellickson, I like McGee, Moore or maybe they'll part with Davis)

I made the mistake of fellating Lilly a couple of weeks ago in another thread, and he really stunk it up in his subsequent two starts....This was a bad time for him to get knocked around, but he's still going to net a solid prospect, no?

ESPN Insider has a line saying "Lilly to Yanks Has Legs". I'm not an insider, so I don't now the whole story.

The small rumor is about going to the mets. Don't know why it says yanks in the link headline.

Only mention of the yankees is this: "We should consider the Yankees interest in protecting Hughes from a worrisome workload, too, and in that case some other arms could come into play, such as Cleveland's Fausto Carmona, Ben Sheets in Oakland or the Cubs' Ted Lilly."

Any possibility of or interest in (or both) an Upton for Lilly type swap? I really have no idea how highly the Rays consider Upton's value right now or what the overall feeling on the board is about Upton.

He was mentioned in the blurb about being available, though.

Wed have to include a lot more than Lilly to get Upton. Also, I dont know how Lilly would fare in a divison loaded with sluggers and Im sure that the Yanks and Rays both have that in mind.

Bit of old news...

#Cubs According to George Ofman (WGN), #Mets Josh Thole, a LH catcher, is one of the names being discussed for Ted Lilly

Only the Cubs would trade their best trading chip for a prospect that plays the same position as their best player (production for $$$ wise) and a position in which their organization has some depth.

This is just a question, as I don't have the stats to say if this would be a good idea or not, but perhaps Soto or this Thole guy could be converted into a 1Bman after Lee leaves?

The Cubs have exactly 0 guys who are on track to be MLB regulars at the C position, at least not without a good bit of luck. It's not a deep position.

That said, I'm not super crazy about Thole being the return for Lilly, although his name being mentioned suggests that the Cubs can get at least that good a player for TRL.

If Soto can be our starter at the position for the next several years, I think that Wellington Castillo or Robinson Chirinos would be perfectly fine as backups.

Looking at Josh Thole's stats, he seems like he lacks the power to play 1B, but has played there a lot in the past. I think he looks like a great catcher prospect if his defense is solid. He would immediately jump to the top of our catching prospect lists as he has had some success at most levels, playing against older players at each stop. He profiles as a MLB regular better than Castillo, Chirinos, or Clevenger at this point in their development. Thole just can't compare with regard to power. He is just a very different type of player.

He is a singles and doubles hitter who has great plate discipline. He seems to profile similarly to Jason Kendall. I also don't see him as a future piece of the puzzle in Chicago, but could be flipped for something else, as he would seem to have good value. If he's solid behind the plate, I could see a lot of teams wanting him to be a #2 hitter in their lineup. He could also sit in the minors another year, develop more power, serve as the #2 catcher for a year or two, and ultimately take over when Soto is too pricey (2nd or 3rd arbitration year). Of course, like you said, Soto could just move to 1B! Just my thoughts.
