•Talks between the Phillies and Astros have intensified in the last day, according to ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark. The clubs have more or less agreed on players - J.A. Happ and prospects would go to Houston - but they can’t agree on how much salary the Astros will absorb. Jayson Werth is off the market, so taking on payroll won’t be easy for the Phils.

•The Dodgers are now more focused on trying to obtain Ted Lilly or Paul Maholm.

I must have missed something in this thread. The talks with the Astros are about Oswalt right? The Astros better get a better headliner than Happ. Oswalt has another year on his deal right? I'd think he'd be a bit more valuable than Lilly.

So going by the Happ/Lilly rumors, if we make a deal with the Dodgers, it appears the focus would be on a major league ready pitcher (perhaps + a prospect or two).

If that's the case, would we be looking at John Ely or Scott Elbert? Are there better options or would either or both be a good return for Lilly?

Does anybody know what kind of stuff Happ has? Is it possible that Rothschild could work with him and tweak his approach or mechanics to improve him?

Rothschild has gotten a number of major league pitching acquisitions (Dempster, Silva, Marquis, etc) putting up better numbers than most anyone expected. Could he do the same with Happ, or does Happ simply not have the stuff to be more than a back of the rotation guy?

Happ's stuff is kind of eh. He has a fastball that runs in the high 80s/low 90s with some movement and deception, while his change and slider are decent offerings. As far as pure stuff is concerned, he profiles in the back end of a rotation at best. He could tune up his delivery and spot his fastball better, but I don't see much more of a ceiling with him.

Again, I'd be fine building a package around him in exchange for Lilly, but I wouldn't do Lilly for Happ straight up.

I have a feeling that if we are going to deal with the Dodgers, we'll get back one of Elbert or McDonald as the key piece. :(

Well, Elbert is better than Izturis.

I want Ethan Martin.

Looking thru the Dodgers minor leaguers makes me feel a lot better about the Cubs system.

Yeah however they may be bad, but they've pushed Ethier, Kemp, Loney, Martin, Billingsley, Broxton, and Kershaw through their system over the last 5 years.

Really? After the graduations we've had this year, I think the Dodgers clearly have the better system at the moment personally......

Technically they didn't really produce Ethier but they should get credit for Carlos Santana.

Also, I'm not sure I agree with CubsWin with regards to the Dodgers system being worse.

A Mets official told Joel Sherman of the New York Post it's "very doubtful" they acquire Lilly. The Mets do not want to take on most to all of the $4.37MM left on Lilly's contract and give up prospects too.

I'm sure this is part of their plan to drive down the asking price of Lilly.

Geez there is only around $1.5 million left on Lilly's deal. I can understand the Mets not wanting to do it because at present time they are 1 game over .500 and Lilly isn't going to push them over the edge to get back in the race. But the other teams should have no problem paying $1.5 m and give us a prospect of some sorts.

Check your math.

From Jayson Stark:

jaysonst: Keep hearing #Cubs have lots of action on Ted Lilly. Will likely wait till after Oswalt, so Lilly becomes best SP out there. #trades [via Twitter]

Way to go Hendry, lower his value even more! :P

With how the Haren and Oswalt deals went down, it doesn't make me confident that we'll see the return we think we should get for Lilly.

I was always under the impression that Happ was a pretty stellar prospect. Was he just another benificiary of the east coast hype machine? Or did Joe Morgan just say something stupid one time and I believed it?

Yeah, we went from a couple of vast overpayings (Yunel and Lee deals) to a couple of pretty big underpayings (Oswalt and Haren deals).

It also hurts that the Mets and Tigers dropped out (insomuch as they were conduits to potentially bump up total value), but it helps that there's really not another SP as good as Lilly available at this point. I have no idea what we're looking at for Lilly now.

I assume you meant "raise it."

I'm actually pretty excited about this trade. I think Hendry knows that this may be his final opportunity to salvage a part of this season. He should also have low expectations for next, so he might even consider this to be a make-or-break trade to keep his job.

I think money plays a huge part this season. Guys who are owed big money beyond this season are seen as less valuable, or at the very least, acquiring teams perceive the sellers as more desperate to clear the payroll.

That would bode well for a Lilly trade.

Well, since the Blue Jays wanted Jesus Montero from NY and Casey Kelly for BOS for Downs, I am guessing we can get at least 3 top prospects for Lilly!!!
