I'm just praying some team out there puts in a claim for Edmonds so that he doesn't clear waivers.

It wouldn't be the worst Cubs signing of all time. I'm not saying that because I like Edmonds. I'm saying that because, having grown up with this team, I can always be assured that, no matter how dumb they've gotten, they have always had dumber moments in the past.

wowowowowowow...Well, I guess our 23 year old CF couldn't be called up. That would make too much sense. I really really really really really really really really really really hate this team.

That's really really really really really really really really really really unfortunate, because they're one of the best teams in baseball.

Please just stop. You're just arguing for the sake of arguing here, because there is no way anyone can defend this move.

No there isn't, but in reality it doesn't really change anything, either. Pie was fused to the bench. The only thing that happens here is Reed Johnson loses PT.

The real damage was already done before any of this Edmonds crap even started. At least Felix will get to play in Iowa.

I'm trying to stay positive, if Pie' not going to play everyday with the Cubs, he might as well play everyday with the Iowa Cubs - work on pitch selection. The worst case scenario - Edmonds craps the bed, he's gone, Pie back up, the best case - the Cubs get a hot few months out of Edmonds making the lineup that more formidable. I don't agree with the signing either, I would have had Pie in the lineup everyday from day one but, that's not going to happen and useless to lament it.

Haven't you been paying attention? The Internet Baseball Genius Committee has declared Edmonds done. So it's impossible for him to be productive at this point. Can't happen. Won't happen. BEST case scenario is a swarm of locusts o'er the land. Run! Run for the hills! AAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!

the question is , will this turn into the Robert page part Deux

Doubtful. Edmonds will be here, suck, and be gone in less time than it took for the Roberts thing to finally wind down.

Thats one way to put it. I just think theres a lot of over reaction going on. I doubt(and by doubt I mean hope against hope) that Lous crazy enough to insert Edmonds into the heart of the lineup, more likely in the 7 or 8 spot, and if you look up and down the rosters of national league teams, theres a lot worse 7 and 8(or in the Padres case, 3 and 4) hitters than Jim Edmonds.

Why does nobody seem to realise that The CUbs are not giving up on Pie? If the Cubs were giving up on Pie, they would go after Coco Crisp or Norris Hopper, not an injury prone 38 year old.

Hopefully Felix will light up Iowa, and in September or whenever Edmonds or Johnson get injured, and going by their hostories, one of them will go down, Felix will be back.

because there is seemingly nothing left for Pie to prove or accomplish in Iowa. he dominated there for two years and still struggled when given (sporadic) time with the Cubs. he needs to be given time to adjust to MLB pitching. going back down and demolishing the PCL pitchers won't accomplish anything except unnecessarily delaying his development even further.

they are winning and scoring runs with almost no production in CF against RHP. there is literally no better time for them to stick with Felix and let him take his lumps and adjust. they can afford it right now. who knows if they can in September or in 2009? it is absolutely the perfect time for him to be out there. if they aren't willing to do that now, then i have to wonder if they ever will be.

It'll be interesting to see how opinions change if Pie doesn't light up AAA pitching again.

Everyone seems to assume that's what will happen, but it's far from certain.

Hopefully it doesn't come to that.

Nothing is certain. Suggesting that Pie has had a chance or that he's not likely to get better when he faces more ML pitching, as he has at every other level, b/c he hasn't done it in 200+ sporadic ABs is just terrible logic.

Everyone keeps saying worst case scenario, Edmonds sucks for a few weeks, Pie comes back up. That won't happen.

If Edmonds sucks,

A. he'll get a far longer leash than Pie, after all he's old or something.

B. If they ever have the nuts to DFA Edmonds, they'll go get some other stop-gap to take his place.

Felix Pie won't start more than 15 games the rest of the season. If they don't dump him in some stupid trade for a starter who's worse than Rich Hill, then they can have him on the roster next year, and they can say, well hey Felix has had almost 300 PAs in the majors and hasn't shown he can hit yet, he's gonna have to earn his position on this club. The unwashed masses will claim this is his 3rd year in the bigs, if he can't hit now, you might as well cut him, he's just another Corey Patterson(to be fair they are both black CFs) Felix will either make the team as the 25th man behind some mediocrity like Coco Crisp or Jefferey Hammonds or be sent down to AAA until they can find an adequate middle reliever to trade him for. (I can't decide exactly how they'll botch him next year yet.)

5/14/08 Chicago Cubs

Signed OF Jim Edmonds to a 1 year contract; Optioned OF Felix Pie to AAA Iowa.

Look for it in the next few hours.

Look for this after the first game Edmonds plays:

5/17/08 Chicago Cubs

The outfield at Wrigley spontaneously opened up and sucked Jim Edmonds down to hell in his first inning playing for the Cubs.

Anyone care to play guess the contract terms? Hendry is unlikely to go league minimum, because there must be A LOT of other teams interested - so I'll throw out $1M with PA bonuses that could reach $4.

I think if he signs above the league minimum, the Cubs are on the hook for his remaining deal with the Padres.

As I understand it he's cleared waivers therefore, no team has put in a claim meaning all Hendry has to offer is the league minimum.

Edmonds will make the pro-rated version of the league minimum. ~280K. The Padres will pay the remainder of his 8M contract minus that. No player that ever gets waived gets more than the league minimum.

Didn't Reed Johnson?

Reed Johnson was on a non-guaranteed contract. (sort of) He was given the Todd walker 1/6 pay deal for being cut before the start of the season.

just because he CAN offer league minimum, doesn't mean he WILL.

The teams didn't pass on Edmonds, they passed on him at his current salary. THe OP is saying that Hendry is thinking that SURELY a lot of other teams are interested in him at a reduced rate, so Hendry will outbid himself.
