Where is Dusty when you need him? He has unreasonable manlove for "proven vets" and isn't getting good production from his CF. I'm amazed he's not flying under the radar trying to recruit him.

Edmonds probably knows the Reds are terrible.

So he'd fit right in, no pressure. And he can still stick it to the Cards somewhat regularly.

I see what you did there.

I wish I could take credit for that one, but it was unintentional. Good catch. =D>

I'm going to have to start up a thread in Cubs discussions if this one goes really happens.

The closest parallel I can think of to this would be when the Bulls traded for John Starks.

Well, we all hated Dennis Rodman as well, but that actually worked out okay, didn't it?

Everyone needs to relax a bit. If he sucks, he won't play, but I'm sure the Wrigley faithful will rise and cheer the first time he pulls a premature dive to catch a ball or he starts hitting. In the end, it's $284K and a low-risk, maybe good reward move.

This would be a disastrous move had Pie been getting any playing time in the fist place. As it is, it can hardly hurt anything.

I'd sure as hell rather have Jim Edmonds platooning with Reed Johnson than Reed Johnson platooning with nobody...since it seems Pie has fallen out of favor for whatever reason.

I really don't understand why Edmonds would even want to come here. He knows how the fans feel about him.

I doubt that really matters much to him. I doubt he has a lot of job offers, especially to play almost everyday for a first place team.

Bruce has already said he wants to stick it to the Cards.

Dennis Rodman's career (at least physically) wasn't on a steep decline before he came here. Also, Rodman was probably the 3rd or 4th most hated player on those Pistons teams. Also, Rodman's signing didn't push like Toni Kukoc out of the rotation.

This is however, the best analogy I've seen sadly.

espnnews is reporting he signed

Alright! Mediocrity, here we come!

That's quite optimistic of you, thinking he'll be mediocre.

Per an update on ESPN1000, this move will only cost the Cubs $284K. Not a huge risk and pretty easy for them to cut ties if Jimmy is truly done.

Can people stop saying this is a low risk move? If he comes in and stinks up the joint, and causes the Cubs to lose games, that sounds pretty high risk if you ask me. Divisions can be decided by 1 or 2 games over the course of 162. Every game is precious.

When the alternative is Reed Johnson, it really is pretty much a low-risk move.

Even Pie wasn't likely to perform all that much better, but the point is he has upside and is young enough to have a future. But he wasn't going to play anyway. It's not signing Edmonds that we should be mad about so much as it is not playing Pie. Pie wasn't playing either way and Edmonds is probably a better option than playing Johnson vs. RHPs.

Because we all know Reed Johnson has been tearing it up. No one has said Edmonds will be good. But Johnson is getting all the PT, and he has been terrible lately, posting a .541 OPS in May. As sad as it is, there's not much to lose here.

We can all crow about how Pie should be getting most of the PT (as he should), but we all know that wasn't going to happen either way.

Honestly, he's not going to suck any more than Felix Pie would or Reed Johnson vs. righthanders would, so I would think that qualifies as "low risk". Jim Edmonds will have very little to do with the Cubs winning or losing games unless Lou foolishly bats him in the first 5 slots in the order.

The problem is, you could get very similar production from Pie while developing him and giving him big league at bats. If the Cubs are getting bad at bats, they might as well come from someone who isn't 38 years old and on the downside of their career.
