CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs were on the verge Wednesday of signing free agent outfielder Jim Edmonds, who was released last week by the San Diego Padres.

Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said before Wednesday night's game that Edmonds was on his way to Chicago and must pass a physical before he can join the team.

Please fail your physical Jim!

Might as well and just hope for lightening in a bottle at this point.

Ahh wonderful, my second least favorite player of the past decade, on the wrong side of his career. Nothing like a move for move's sake. I'm not a Pie fan by any stretch, but I would gladly jump on that BandWGN to keep Edmonds away.

The only other athlete I've hated more than Jim Edmonds was Deion Sanders.

Best I can hope for now is that he blows a simple catch by trying to make a highlight reel and costs Z a victory and Z kills him...

nsbb has been particularly hilarious today. Maybe it was worth picking Edmonds up after all

Quotes from Hendry:

"I think just in general most people feel he's still got something left in the tank. I think he's going to be a motivated player," Hendry said. "Obviously we're not going to ask him to have to go out there every single day."

Hendry said scouts felt that Edmonds was improving before he was released. Hendry said Edmonds may have tried to come back too soon from the calf injury.

"There are really no negatives in it," Hendry said. "You're not giving up players and you're not spending a lot of dollars. ... Hopefully, he'll be able to give us a great portion of the Jim Edmonds we all knew and used to fear in a lot of ways. He used to play well against us and played well in this park."

Oh god. A "he played well against us here. OMG let's sign him now!" deal.

He was playing against Cubs pitching, Jim. That's why he was so good at Wrigley. Now he won't be facing Cubs pitching. This same rationale was used for signing Jeff Blauser and look at how that turned out.

stupid hendry. What's Edmond's numbers in Wrigley?

Career at Wrigley .254/.378/.540

Jim Hendry loves anyone who used to be good against the Cubs at Wrigley.

No, he was good at Wrigley because he was an other-worldly baseball player for a 6 year stretch from 2000-2005; consequently, those were the years he played in the National League Central against the Cubs.

Well, since you volunteered to be such a smart ass without being addressed......your mindless tripe never has any meaningful baseball insight. Have you ever even played the game? Or do you just like watching it in mom's basement?

Ok, come clean. This is somebody's joke account, right? Tree? abuck? IMB? Rocket? Vance? Sulley? USS?

Who is it?

Mods, check the IP, nobody is this much of a caricature. I mean, come on, Don Kessinger sucked.

don's been a member of the board for almost as long as i have...he's for real...who's joke account are you?

You're right, I post nonsensical parodies of stereotypes in every one of my posts. I'm ZZ Thorn's joke account.

What I wish the Idiot would say about this:

"There are really some negatives in it so we decided to pass," Hendry said. "You're not giving up players and you're not spending a lot of dollars but we thought we have a pretty good player in Pie that could fulfill our need once given some playing time. ... Hopefully Jim Edmonds will go to the AL, he used to play well against us and played well in this park."

So facing the Cubs "pitching staff" (and I use that term loosely) had nothing to do with it? Really? I agree he had good number those years, but facing the Cubs staff had a lot to do with those numbers at Wrigley. Daniel Garaby strikes fear into the hearts of no one.

the cubs have had a good pitching staff since 2003. edmonds was an amazing player, that's why he hit well at wrigley. it's not complicated.

Jim Hendry's most effective defense for these criticisms is two words:

Gary Gaetti

This is what he is thinking.

We were pretty much hoping for the same with Karros, especially in spliting time with Choi, and when Choi went down he performed pretty well.

I'm not that hopefully but I am hoping.

Said the same thing about Kendall

Agreed, when Edmonds was with St. Louis he hit everyone well.

You know one of the things that surprises me in all of this is, I never thought Jim Edmonds would *want* to join the Cubs. He really engaged in some of the badmouthing in years past. My impression was always that he really didn't like the Cubs, that it was more than just business.

I guess that goes out the window though when you don't have a job. I'm still a little leery whether we are going to get his best effort. He'll probably be making peanuts compared to what he's used to.

I think he was saying that facing the Cubs pitching staff didn't have much to do with it. Against all of baseball from 2000-2006 Edmonds averaged a 147 OPS+. He was just really damn good.

Ok guys, I have not posted in a while and I am sure I am going to be ripped for this one, but I have to share it with everyone nonetheless.

I live here in DSM and David Kaplan was just on a local Sports radio station. He stated among other things that Greg Maddux told him personally that Edmonds still has some good in him and that he is "extremely motivated to stick it to the Cards". Maddux told Kaplan that many of Edmaonds problems were due to the spacious centerfield in Petco. To my surprise he also ripped Pie saying basically that he has a case of and I quote "Big League-itis". He said several veterens are not happy that he does not get the park and work and that the Chicago nightlife is a problem for him. He said he thought this was becoming quite a problem and he needs to come here to Iowa and regain a focus if he wants to fulfill his talent.

That was the jist of the discussion. I know it will probably be ripped by most, but I have to admit it made the whole thing a bit more paletable for me!

And it was true. Kendall was quite a bit better in Chicago than in Oakland. In fact, his numbers in Chicago were a little above average for catchers last year, but it didn't justify both 1) his arm and 2) the fact that he was keeping Soto down.
