Per an update on ESPN1000, this move will only cost the Cubs $284K. Not a huge risk and pretty easy for them to cut ties if Jimmy is truly done.

Can people stop saying this is a low risk move? If he comes in and stinks up the joint, and causes the Cubs to lose games, that sounds pretty high risk if you ask me. Divisions can be decided by 1 or 2 games over the course of 162. Every game is precious.

Honestly, he's not going to suck any more than Felix Pie would or Reed Johnson vs. righthanders would, so I would think that qualifies as "low risk". Jim Edmonds will have very little to do with the Cubs winning or losing games unless Lou foolishly bats him in the first 5 slots in the order.

The problem is, you could get very similar production from Pie while developing him and giving him big league at bats. If the Cubs are getting bad at bats, they might as well come from someone who isn't 38 years old and on the downside of their career.

He will. He's probably going to bat him 5th and move Fuku to the 2 spot. Not that order necessarily means a whole lot, but the logic (breaking up the righties) is pretty absurd when you're putting what presently amounts to an automatic out that high in the lineup.

I'm going to have to start up a thread in Cubs discussions if this one goes really happens.

The closest parallel I can think of to this would be when the Bulls traded for John Starks.

Well, we all hated Dennis Rodman as well, but that actually worked out okay, didn't it?

Everyone needs to relax a bit. If he sucks, he won't play, but I'm sure the Wrigley faithful will rise and cheer the first time he pulls a premature dive to catch a ball or he starts hitting. In the end, it's $284K and a low-risk, maybe good reward move.

What a horrible analogy.. Rodman didn't suck donkey balls when he came to Chicago.. He was a great player.. Theres the difference.

Edmonds is 38 years old and FINISHED.. What a disaster.

Eh, Rodman was looked at as a huge malcontent and not someone who could necessarily contribute much to a winning team at the time. The Spurs wanted him gone so badly that they traded him for Will Purdue.

He was still rebounding and defending like a beast, though, but the move didn't come without a lot of drama beforehand.

That said, I don't think the situations are very comparable at all because I don't believe Edmonds has even a little bit left in the tank.

I hope he was already in Chicago and will be in uniform tonight. might as well get it over with as quickly as possible

I think he was in Chicago taking a physical already when they reported the signing. Not sure, though.

I remember telling my brother a few yrs ago, that it would be a cold day in hades, that I would ever root for Edmonds.

I won't root against Edmonds, and for his sake, he better hit from the moment he steps into the Cubs clubhouse, or the fans of Chicago will be on him like Kirstie Alley on a cupcake.

But right now, :( at the thought of seeing Edmonds in Chicago.

I bet he's enjoying that.

"Cough twice, Jim."

"Can we keep doing that one, doc?"

he'll duplicate his 04 numbers -- 301/418/643

I'd still boo him every time he came up to the plate.

He'll probably come in and be on fire. Jim will then sign him to a multi-million dollar/year extension and give him a no trade clause.

Then Jim will trade Pie to somewhere that they actually let young players play everyday and he'll be the Cubs new Lou Brock.

I just can't wait! ](*,)

How come MLB.com or the Cubs official site has no mention of any of this? Dont they usually get the info pretty quickly?

Because it's not official yet.

he either has to die on the field and help us win a world series. in my mind there's no middle ground.

Fixed.

Why not both? At the same time? In his first game as a Cub?

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs were on the verge Wednesday of signing free agent outfielder Jim Edmonds, who was released last week by the San Diego Padres.

Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said before Wednesday night's game that Edmonds was on his way to Chicago and must pass a physical before he can join the team.

Please fail your physical Jim!
