I didn't read the entire thread but I don't get how some of you can accept this guy with open arms. I hated this guy for years. With his dive to get gold gloves and his constant crying. It's not like he is even close to the prime of his career. Please don't let this happen. There are certain players that should never be a Cub and he is one of them.

Nobody is welcoming Edmonds with "open arms", it's the simply inevitable that Hendry will sign Edmonds. 99.999999999999999999999 to inifnity% of the Cubs fans would prefer to keep Pie up and not sign Edmonds. But Hendry/Piniella has a man-crush on Edmonds....

Actually, on the Tribune poll a full 39.6% endorse the move.

Those are the people voting from West Virginia.

well, we've done pretty well without a CF for most of the year, so maybe Edmonds gets here, starts for two weeks, does terrible, gets booed and the offense still performs.

That way everyone wins (except that [expletive] edmonds).

if we do sign edmonds, are people assuming that he'll play every day? if this is the case, do people think he will play every day if he doesn't hit?

the worst part of this situation is that it's going to rob pie of any chance at starting significantly this season. but honestly, does anyone think that pie has a chance of starting this season, anyway? lou isn't going to start pie without production, and he won't get production if hedoesn't start him consistently. so, if pie wouldn't get a chance this year, anyway, why are people so upset about the cubs signing a shot at lightning in a bottle?

they didn't trade anyone, and i have faith that edmonds won't stick around if he can't hit for us. so calm down everyone, it's not that big a deal.

best post in this thread by far.

Who really cares? If Edmonds doesen't hit, he gets DFAed.......Pie isn't starting much anyway with Reed Johnson here. Maybe Pie can work on whatever Perry had helped him with in AAA, and he'll get a shot to be a full timer in 09.

VORP:

Jim Edmonds in 103 PA: -6.3

Reed Johnson in 133 PA: -1.3

Felix Pie in 70 PA: -1.8

Cubs CF in 203 PA: -3.1

I'm not sure I can add these, but in twice the appearances, the Cubs current CF's have been 1/2 as sucky?

Please, just promise that you will stake make gay jokes all the time no matter how well he does. Make sure to constantly talk about how much he likes playing with Wood, get it? It's funny, like when he played with Pujols. Also, any time he makes a good play, say it sucked because any other center fielder would have had it.

I just wonder if people are going to be saying the same things they have said for years if Edmonds plays well for the Cubs.

The chances that edmonds will play well are just about equal to the chances that Cubs fans will stop hating him and his "dive at anything in my vicinity" ways.

Maybe there's something about Pie that I don't know. Maybe he's not willing to work on his hitting. Maybe he's taken to wearing women's underpants in the clubhouse and his teammates have the heebie-jeebies.

yeah but if that is the case, how is edmonds going to make things any better?

I think you already made that comment.

Like four times.

I'm lost for words. On one hand, he's hated, so the hell with him. On the other hand, he wants to stick it to the Cards and probably hates them, so that's nice. On my third hand, he sucks, so he's got that working against him. Bleh.

If we have to sign a crappy OFer, can't we just take Jacque back?

Seconded

He'd cost the league minimum as well, right? I'd vastly prefer him.

Three hands, eh? Awesome, is that kind of like Alfonseca's two extra fingers and toes? :D

I'm usually not one for conspiracy theories, but... I don't know if I can believe that. 2 out of 5 Cubs fans are for signing him? There's just no way. I would think that the only people who take the time to read the Chicago Tribune's Cubs section are the knowledgeable fans, not the bandwagon types who think the name is a good signing. Even still, I wouldn't think the casual Cubs fans would want a former Cardinal who's far past his prime to be signed.

I call BS on that poll.

You'd be shocked at how many Cubs fans are convinced Pie can't play in the bigs.

I am almost as shocked by those who say they are 100% sure that he can play in the bigs.

Edmonds, if signed, will platoon. And if he stinks, he'll be looking for a job yet again. Its not that big of a deal. If Lou isn't going to play Felix, at least he'll get some AB's in Iowa.

It's nice. A little humid, but nice.
