I'm too lazy to go back through and look through the entire thread - did anyone suggest the possibility of Edmonds intentionally going in the tank just to torpedo our chances?

I wouldn't put it past him.

but Edmonds isn't worthless as some would like to imply based on the fact that he's old and has a bad 100 PAs.

This is just straight up absurd.

He's worthless based on his age, health, rapid and steady decline over several years, horrible 2007 and atrocious start to 2008.

Don't pretend people are basing this on 100 PA, it makes you look ridiculous.

If Edmonds 2007 was horrible, then you guys have a different definition of horrible than me. A CF who puts up a .755 OPS vs. righties is a valuable half of a platoon.

No, he's not really. Especially when Felix Pie could conceivably come close to that number if playing everday vs. RHPs and have the added benefit of gettign the growing pains over with instead of going thru the same thing next year or whenever the Cubs determine Pie to be ready.

I completely agree that Felix Pie is loads better and the Cubs are idiots for not giving him the CF job. A .755 OPS is on the extreme low end of what I'd expect from him vs. righties on an everyday bassi, and he'd play loads better defense to boot.

Hardly. Edmonds wants to stick it to the Cardinals in the worst way. He feels slighted about being dumped, kind of like Grace did when the Cubs let him go.

So, why are you arguing that Edmonds is not worthless?

You're falling for the set up, dude.

Did you play Doyle Lonnegan in The Sting?

So, why are you arguing that Edmonds is not worthless?

Because he's not. He's still a somewhat worthwhile major-leaguer to some teams. He's worthless to the theoretical SmartCubs that start Pie, to be sure. He's in a grey area to the actual Cubs that are starting Reed Johnson vs. righties. I'd argue he's worthwhile to them, but it's close enough that I can respect the opposite opinion.

But he's still good enough to be a worthwhile major-leaguer somewhere.

The ideas that Edmonds isn't completely washed up and that the Cubs are idiots for not starting Pie aren't mutually exclusive.

Well, since you volunteered to be such a smart ass without being addressed......your mindless tripe never has any meaningful baseball insight. Have you ever even played the game? Or do you just like watching it in mom's basement?

We can watch the games now? I just wait for my spreadsheets to update.

I think he means refreshing fangraphs between pitches.

Don't worry guys. Edmonds will really break out of it with the Cubs because he wants to stick it to the Cards so bad. Just like Mark Grace and stuff.

took an insult right out of the bill plaschke playbook there.

I think we now know what Jay Mariotti's screen name is on this board.

I see your point. I still think Edmonds is worthless. He hasn't shown that he can even get back to that .755 OPS vs. RHPs. He was one of the worst players in baseball thru July last year w/ an OPS under .700. He's a year older. A year worse defensively. He was just cut from the worst offensive team in the MLB for Jody Gerut! Edmonds is done.

Wouldn't the fact that they've assembled the worst offense in MLB make the Padres' judgment on offensive players suspect? :)

He finally made my ignore list. At this point, all of his posts are just coming in here and mocking the people smart enough to understand numbers. It's probably a self-confidence thing. He hasn't added anything productive... ever.

Is the "Pie-Should-Play" wailing-and-gnashing-of-teeth crowd the same group still crying over the Cubs not playing future Hall of Famer Matt Murton? Just curious.

Send Pie to Iowa so he can improve his bat confidence and rebuild his trade value (if that's the route the Cubs choose). Give Edmonds a month to show whether he can contribute or not; if he can, then move him in July somewhere else. If he can't, then release him.

What's the big freaking deal? I don't think trading one 600 OPS guy for another in the everyday lineup really matters much one way or the other. Pie is the future, terrific. He ain't the present. Let's move on to the next issue.

geez, you're obnoxious.

well played.

and yes, i have played the game. though i played with a mitt, batting helmet and other modern amenities that i'm sure you had to do without when you played your high school ball in 1916, so i'm sure it's not the same.

I know this reeks of "lightning in the bottle", and if Piniella/Hnedry wants Edmonds, they'll get him, but isn't it possible that Edmonds could give the Cubs atleast a decent line in about 250 at-bats for the rest of the yr? Look I prefer Pie playing in CF over Edmonds/Johnson, that's not going to happen until 2009.

I'm not 100% behind this move, heck, I am not even 30% behind this move, but I l realize, it doesn't mean much how I feel (or anybody here feel), but barring a surprising move, Edmonds will be a Cub. We can hope that if he craps out for about 2 weeks or so, the Cubs will cut ties, quickly. I'm hoping for a Gary Gaetti type numbers for Edmonds, but I would even take a line of .250/.330/.410 from Edmonds.

The problem with this is that unless Pie pulls a Soto 2007 out of his ass, 2009 isn't going to happen for Pie either. We can't have an untested CF going into the season, we saw how well that worked out doing it in '08! We'll sign some horrible retread to show him the ropes, and Felix will wind up being dumped off for pennies on the dollar after Nook Logan hits 300 for 2 weeks.

If Edmonds steps up his game like Grace did when he left, then Edmonds will be exactly as awful as he is right now. Hopefully Edmonds has some extra "wants to stick it to" inside him.

He didn't just play against RHP though did he? And you'd be kidding yourself if you thought that he'd only be hitting against RHP as a Cub. Strict platoons simply do not happen. He had an 88 OPS+ last year, the third straight year of significant declines in that area. That's bad.
